    Default Desert Tribes Crown

I downloaded and installed DLV 6.1 over the weekend, excited to try a game as the Desert Tribes. The first thing i immediately noticed upon loading the game was that their leader did not have a crown. I played the game for a little while thinking maybe he would get one later through an event or something.

Anyway, he never got a crown and eventually became Offensive to Nobles. I finally had to quit the game because I was losing government points every turn with no way to stop it.

I posted my discovery in the General forums, and agistournas was kind enough to point out that there was no hedjaz_crown ancillary in the game, and therefore no crown for the DT king. So I took it upon myself to mod it in and playtest it. I used the Egyptian crown as the model and slightly edited the effects and description, so the pictures used are those of the Egyptian crown, but the description and effects are new.

I also added royal banners for the king and heir, again using the Egyptian ones as models. I used the Mongol banner effects for morale and movement, since the DT have to cross large expanses of desert and wilderness (and being lightly armed desert raiders, they should be able to move swiftly).

I started a new game last night and have played quite a few turns. I'm now on my second king, so I can verify that the succession model works as well. I moved my new king into the capital and the next turn, he got the crown, and the new heir got a royal banner.

I can upload the edited files for the DT crown and royal banners if anyone is interested, per suggestion from Blackleaf-Wille. They're not perfect, but at least they make the DT playable.

UPDATE 04/06/2009: Thanks to Tokus*Maximus for providing some pictures for the crown and royal banners. I have included the new picture files and a new ancillaries file (to enable the pictures to work) along with the original files in a rar file.

    Installation Instructions:
    export_descr_ancillaries and export_descr_ancillary_enums both go into C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\DLV_ext\dat

    export_ancillaries goes into C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\DLV_ext\data\text

    descr_strat goes into C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\DLV_ext\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign

As Blackleaf-Wille pointed out, I forgot to tell you where to put the TGA files. They go in C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\DLV_ext\data\UI\Ancillaries. Sorry for leaving that out initially. Thanks B-W for pointing that out.

EDIT 08/03/09 : Per suggestions from Grimblade and Xtiaan72, I added some lines to the "export_descr_character traits" file to give the DT sultan the "at the seat of power" trait. The new "export_descr_character_traits" goes in C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\DLV_ext\data.

I have to thank the following people for their comments and suggestions on how to improve the mod:
    Agis Tournas
    Blackleaf-Wille
    Grimblade
    Xtiaan72

Tokus*Maximus for the graphics on the crown and banners

Repman (of course) for creating the greatest TW mod ever

If I left anyone out, please feel free to PM me and I'll make sure your name is added to the credits.

8/24/10: I know, this is long overdue, but I just wanted to point out that this mod is no longer necessary since it is automatically included in the latest version of DLV.

Cool man, no idea why they didn't have a crown in the first place. You should edit the first post after each update etc, like Taiji does Where is the banner files again?
Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

I think the banner files are also in the export_descr_ancillaries file. I had to scroll down to find them.

EDIT: Oh right, you meant the picture files, not the text files.

I'll post the edited files up tonight when I get home. I'm still at work right now and don't have access to my DLV directory.

I would never have thought to look in the files had you not pointed it out to me. So this is really your mod too.

I'll be at work for another few hours yet, but I will post the files when I get home.

Looks like the banners are in the file called

    C:\Programfiler\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\DLV_ext\data\banners

he he, looks like you going to need some sort of texture opener or a program to convert the texture-files.

I have now posted the required text files along with instructions on where to put them.

Oh yeah, good call on the banners, Blackleaf-Wille. The next step will be to find some custom graphics for the banners and crown, if I ever get around to it. Enjoy the mod. I'm off to play some more as the DT.

Well, it seems I may have hit a bug in my current game. I started a new game today and my first king died unexpectedly on the second turn. I moved the heir into the capital as usual, but he never got his crown. It has now been 5 or 6 turns and still he has not received his crown. I don't know what to do here. I'm looking back at all the files I edited and don't see any reason why he wouldn't receive his crown. It worked the first time I played the game, so I don't understand why it's not working now. This is really annoying.

Update 04/08/2009: I think I now know what may have happened. In my current game, the original royal line died out, and the husband of a princess who had married into the family became regent. Since he wasn't a true heir, he never received the crown upon becoming faction leader. I have the same situation in my current game. My faction leader has the "regent" trait, which prevents him from being crowned as a true heir. He does have a son who should be recognized as the true heir of a new dynasty, so I'll keep playing and see what happens.

Thanks to Tokus for providing some new graphics files. I have updated the first post in the thread and included the graphics files for the crown and banners. I'm still trying to work out the faction symbols, but we're getting there.

So you place the TGA-files in the folder named...?

This is only for Imperial campaign(Not custom/historical map)?

Oops, I forgot to tell you where to put the TGA files. I will edit the first post in a minute.

That's now done. See the first post for where to put the TGA files.

I know this works for the Imperial Campaign. I haven't tested it on any other campaign.
