Default Gunmen Attack Police Academy in Pakistan

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...033000098.html
LAHORE, Pakistan, March 30 -- Gunmen armed with grenades and assault weapons invaded a police training compound near this Pakistani city Monday, battling security forces and holding dozens of police trainees hostage for more than seven hours before being overpowered.
There were conflicting reports about how many people were killed in the attack, although military and police commanders said at least eight police cadets and four assailants had died, and dozens injured. After army and police commandos stormed the rural compound about 4 p.m., the surviving attackers surrendered on a rooftop. No group has claimed responsibility for the assault.
It seems Pakistan is continuing to slide into lawlessness. Not good for the stability of the region.

Yeah, that's probably a contributing factor.

Harboring extremists has been costly for Pakistan, they are experiencing first hand the results of their support to these fundamentalists. I would say its about time Pakistan gets serious and take full control of their country, starting with banning all religious extremists groups and going after them with force.

Yuh and those extremists were being harboured to be sent to fight in "Indian Occupied" Kashmir.

Well Pakistan could start by reining in the ISI for once

Thats the delicious irony of this, they harbored and supported these extremists groups to fight India in Kashmir, but its them who have been attacked.

I don't think the geniuses in the Pakistani military thought though this properly. In essence its a good plan, well train these extremists, and fight India, who they hate.. a sound plan on the outside.
But they completely missed the wild card "Afghanistan", they assumed everything will be the same in Afghanistan, the Taliban will be control, and they are friendly towards Pakistan, plus the western regions of Pakistan serves as a training ground for extremists to be sent to India and other parts of the world. Well Bin Laden sure did mess up that balance. Now Pakistan had to choose between the USA and the Taliban, and now they are paying the price for picking the USA, and fighting the same monster they themselves created.

I dont think it can practically happen, since every country needs a Intelligence operation. If the ISI are disbanded, they will be replaced by another kind of ISI. I think they should just stop funding the ISI, because we know most this money goes to these extremists groups.

Very true man,I wonder what the future holds for Pakistan and naturally the Indian government is extremely concerned about what is happening there.

Do you think the federal government is even capable at this point to be able to reign in the ISI? From what I've read, the ISI has grown in power.

If it's Police Academy 6 that they attacked then fair enough, but the earlier films were excellent and deserve better.

That's exactly why this situation is so dangerous. Pakistan has nuclear weapons. If the state continues to descend into anarchy who knows what can happen? There are very radical elements inside of Pakistan who would love to get a hold of a nuclear weapon. If a terrorist group gets a nuclear weapon then God help us. If Pakistan continues to degrade, I would support an Indian takeover of Pakistan. there shouldn't have been any partition in the first place. Ever since India was partitioned the region has become unstable. It's a real shame.

Indeed I would hate to think what they would do with one .Then again one of their citizens ran the largest nuclear trafficking ring ever and yet he was hailed as a hero in Pakistan for spreading the "bomb"

yes I completely agree,Pakistan has been severely mismanaged over the past 60 years.Journalists from the UK produced a report on the Swat region and the locals said that they preferred the Taliban to the Pakistani government, since they had felt neglected by Islamabad for all those years.

Indian Takeover of Pakistan? Well, if India ever attempted that, it better be ready for a lot of "terrorists"...

There's a difference between these attacks and the type that fundamentalist extremists carry out. The attackers were well-armed and equipped and very prepared. They used tactics almost military-style in nature to infiltrate, surround and seige the facility. I don't believe that the same fundamentalists Pakistan is fighting in the western regions is responsible for this. I believe it is more likely that these fighters were from the same group that attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore with the objective of kidnapping them. They might be related to the LTTE or might be foreign fighters altogether. Whatever the case, we'll soon know since 3 or 4 of them have been captured.

One thing can be certain: Pakistan's government will surely not waste this opportunity to beg for more (military) handouts to fight "extremists." First on the list? AMRAAMs and SAMs, the better with which to take on the great Taliban Air Force.
