How do I play ETW without internet connection to steam?
Cos I tried it without internet being on and Empire wont launch without getting on to steam online or offline.
and I want to play when the server is down.
Cheers
Wally
Do you need an internet connection to make steam off-line?

If you play in offline mode then no internet connection is required for Steam.
The only time you would ever need an active internet connection is when you first install the game to activate it via steam.
After that, you can play the rest of the game in offline if you wish , as long you choose that option within steam.

If you try and start your Steam Account, when your PC does not have access to the Internet, you should get this dialogue box open:
Click on "Start in Offline Mode" and it does what it says on the tin, and then you can play ETW in Offline Mode.![]()

I've been playing with steam on-line. I closed down steam and removed by broadband connection from the back. I then ran steam - I get the 'steam updating' message and it just sits there.
Hmmm..... interesting.
Edited:
OK, I put back my internet connection and launched Steam (still in on-line mode). I changed it to off-line mode and shut down Steam. I then removed the cable again and launched Steam. I warned that I was in off-line mode but allowed me to launch the game.
So, it appears that you need to be connected to go into off-line mode.![]()

That is strange B! For I intentionally closed Steam down while I was in "Online Mode" before I closed my Net connection and tried to restart Steam, getting the dialogue box shown in my post above.
So I was able to select "OffLine Mode", even though I had closed Steam whilst "Online" and restarted it with no Net connection available.![]()
Lol yeh it appears you do need to sign-in to activate offline-mode so steam 'knows' you hav made changes? has anyone found a workaround for this?
I think the previous post meant if you simply unplug your internet cable(cat-5) presumably. then restart steam. It automatically signs into offline mode. is that correct?
will test it. dont think its going to work

What I actually did was close Steam while I was in Online mode, disable my network connection, and then try and relaunch Steam. The result was the dialogue box above (#4), which allowed me to restart Steam in Offline mode, enabling me to play ETW.
Why I was able to do so when others cannot is beyond my ken, but I shouldn't be surprised considering how temperamental the ETW/Steam combination appears to be: when seemingly similar rigs can give such different results!![]()
Disable your network connection or just unplug the cable and start in 'offline-mode'. Works fine for me in Empire and Football Manager 2009.

I must start steam "in offline mode" with my ethernet/network jack un plugged. Otherwise it just fails while updating. I dont have a internet connection to this computer normally, just a network connection between two comps.
