Default Anyone else getting major GPU temps on this game?

I'm seeing really hot temps on my 4870x2 with this game. At least 10 degrees hotter than other new games that are far more graphically intense. I understant the x2 runs hot and is designed to do so, but what is it about this game that is pushing the card so hard? sure it looks good, but its no crysis, not even close.

2 hours of Crysis or Crysis warhead - about 89c with 68% fan. After 2 hours of standard battle in ETW I'm seeing 100c with 78% fan. And each day I seem to have to turn the fans up more and more to compensate.

CPU and NB is up as well, but thats understandable with a massive strategy game. Anyone with an X2 having the same trouble?

    I don't have a X2 but a GTX280 (standard clocks) and I had very high temps with E:TW.

I had no artifacts, though. Normally under stress my card had 65-74 to 78 MAX at ~45% fan speed. In E:TW it easily went to 84-85C in under three minutes.

This is the only game that did this, even modded Crysis couldn't come near this.

Bear in mind that this was happening ONLY on the campaign map, on the battlefield it was around 65C (weird, huh?).

After this I decided to manually adjust the fan speed to 65% while playing E:TW (and some other games, just in case) and the temp were around 65-68 on the campaign map and 60-65C on the battlefield.

I don't get it why only on the campaign map my card could get sooo hot.

that is odd... i never thought it would be higher in the campaign map. although sometimes i do see extraordinary frame rates in the campaign map.

I wonder if the game is off-loading some of the number crunching to the GPU?

actually... i just realized that after the 25th patch the campaign map frame rates were out of this world higher than previously. like 2 to 300 fps. ill bet they eliminated the fps cap. maybe ill get vsync back on and see if it cools down.

I'm one of the frequent CTD-sufferers during battles...most land ones and 100% of Naval ones. Just checked the nvidia monitor after my most recent crash and the GPU temp was up to 79C...is that too hot? I don't know much about GPU heating and cooling. I only know that I've never had this kind of problem with other games. I could play Fallout 3 or the Witcher for hours and hardly notice my fan...same with Spore, MTW2 and others. But man, just a few mins into ETW and my GPU fan is whining like a jet engine! Doesn't matter how low I drop the game settings either, same deal.

Try turning on vsync. I had this happen in another game (eve). The heavy-duty bits were fine, but the mostly static scenes had no fps limiter and so the cards were pumping out like 300 fps on a basically unchanging view, overheating and going nuts. vsync should fix this, at the likely cost of a bit of performance.

moonmonster, that could explain why my card was heating at the campaign map, but man this is strange.

yankeepyrate, Depends on your GPU. What card do you have?

My GTX280 can sustain 110C but of course I would be mad to run it like that.

Typically it was around 76-78 which could be LOWER but was rather ok. 80C is a red line and shouldn't run at those temps for long.

I just decided to pump my fan to 65% during heavy games and the temps never go above 65C.

my 8800gts card overheated and after a while the whole computer was fried I bought a new pc last week with a 285GTX card, and even though it's much lower temps, I still have some heating problems (playing on Ultra). I hope they will fix this, cause I have no problems with other games.

I'm running an 8800GT, 512 mb. Checked Nvidia monitor immediately after the last CTD and it was running 79C...so it could have been a bit over 80C just prior to the crash.
Do you guys think that's what could be going on with the game for many of us, that ETW is such a hog that it drives our GPUs into the red after just a couple of minutes, even on lower settings? Could that force an immediate CTD?
I need to try manually forcing the fan to run higher during ETW and see if that helps...

just had a CTD. SpeedFan was running in the background and my GPU temp was 81C! I have 6 fans running at full RPM!

    UPDATE...

I turned Vsync back on and low and behold cpuid showed a max temp of back down to 90c. operating temp for 4870x2.

So, basically here is what I've found with the 4870x2:
Vsync off - avg 98c (one time it hit 100c) at 80% fan speed
    Vsync on - 90c at 80% fans

I havn't yet tested at which point the higher temps occur, but I'd bet its when it renders the campaign map at 250 fps without Vsync. Like i said before, only noticed this high of frame rate since the 25th patch.

I would suggest that until they cap the campaign map fps, anyone who has a monster video card get vsync on before you run into thermal issues and ETW literally starts wasting hardware.

Damn. Doesn't bode well for me and my one piddly fan. Maybe if I drop down to 1024x768 and Med/Low for everything. That's about the last thing left to try and run this game.

Interesting. I'll give it a go!
I was trolling some hardware, non-gaming forums where people are encountering ETW problems similar to ours...seems like there MIGHT be something going on with ShaderModel3....many people seem to have success reverting to ShaderModel2, though it might not look as good.
One other thought is power supply...I'm running a 500W PSU...anyone else?

The power supply shouldn't do much when it comes to temperatures (unless you're running a crazy 1600 watt and all the heat it gives off superheats the case).

As a cheap hardware solution, I'd recommend picking these up: http://www.xoxide.com/slotcooler.html

Put one under each GPU (you'll have to rip the PCI bracket off and clip it back in backwards, but you don't need any tools for that). I have 2x8800GTS 640MB, and both had their full load temperatures drop something like 15C.

Also, while some cards might be rated to work at 110C, you should never run a card above 90C (around 70 is ideal). Higher than 90C, and you're just slowly cooking your video memory and knocking a few years off its lifespan.

ATI cards run that hot. Comes from the factory with dynamic fan speed set to keep the card in or around 95c. (this is the hotter of the two chips in the x2). Although most people run manual fan control and jack it up, I doubt they would mass produce a card that would fry itself with stock settings, especially considering lifetime warranty.

Thanks for the info and link! I'll give it a look now.

Zeeky_Bomb, I guess you are relating to me about the 110C. I wrote that I try to keep it below 78C in heavy games.

I just put my fan to 65% and the temps never go above 65C which I guess is quite cool under heavy load.

Another solution is to put a slot fan next to the Graphics card. They are cheap and it does a good job of sucking up additional heat from the card.
