    Default I was excommunicated, why?

May be a noob question but it's real confusing.

I was playing as Hungary. I got into alliance with the Papal state. Basically everything was hunky-dory. I was the Pope most favourite faction.

Then I got into war with the Byzantines. their allies: the Venetian attacked me. So I crushed them both.

However, fighting a 2 fronts with small countries was really hard and my army was basically chewing my money. Then the Crusade comes around and I joined the Crusade to cut the cost.

I attacked one Byzantine army and took a Byzantine castle with the Crusading army. The next turn, the Pope excommunicated me.

The Pope is Pope Gregory, the first Pope. Venetian also excomed.

    Just ... What's going on?

PS: I'm no means unfamiliar with being excomed. I completed Spain and I was being excomed for a real long time and having to kill the Pope every 2 turns.

    Excommunication is THAT bad.

Srsly, if you win from the Byzies and Venetians just wait until your pope/leader dies and a new pope will be elected so...done no excommunication.
I once played with Milan, and got excommunicated after conquering Venice and Sicily. He declared a crusade against me and only Spain and the HRE decided both to challenge me, so after they got their arses kicked. The pope died and the crusade was canceled.

Yah. If the pope dies and a new pope from a country you have better relations with is elected you will most likely be reconciled. In my spanish campaign I was beating everybody on all fronts and I wanted italy, so I took Rome. The Pope immediately excommunicated me and called a crusade on my capital a few turns later. I beat all crusading armies (6-8) in all including pretty much every catholic faction left. Then about twenty turns, and two popes, later, I got to participate in a papal election while excommunicated. I voted for the pope and was reconciled. This is a fun part of the game to play with.

Why you were excommunicated -> You attacked Venice. You probably had a blockaded port or sieged town/castle which the pope told you stop attacking.

Way to become re-communicated? -> Kill your king. You laugh, but I'm serious. If your leader dies, you're back in good favor. You won't have good repuation or favor, but you will no longer be the target of crusades. I've done this many times as catholics. Build up several big armies. Rush through the entirety of the enemy lands. Make your king be part of the last assault. Make sure he dies mid-way through, and when the battle ends, you have destroyed a faction, taken a ton of land, and are back in favor with the pope.

    Possible reasons
The pope sends you a do not attack "certain faction" or you will be excommunicated message which you ignore
You attempt to assassinate the pope but your assassin dies (instant excom) or you may have tried to assassinate a papal person (IE merchant priest etc)
Or the ai may have screwed up and mistakenly excommunicated you and Venice whilst meaning to only excom Venice
But judging from your story it looks like it had something to do with venice

I have been in the war with the Venice for a few turns already. I recalled no missions of stop hitting the Venice.

The turn after which I bang the Byzantine with my Crusading army, and take their land, The Pope freaking excom me

I did not try to take out the Pope yet (my assassin is not there yet), nor any Papal state people.

But I will kill that Pope soon. Once my assassin get there and buff up his skill .

No point is wasting my King, I hate losing family members .

Now I'm pressing the Venice with one army. The other join the Crusade and pillaging the lands of Byzantine.

BTW: one of the general (8 stars at night) was adopted. His "father" was 31 years old. The general age was 32 . What's more amazing? The "father's" wife is 35. The general's? 42. WOW. Quite a bunch of MILF there .

And I'm no way being unfamiliar with being excom. I got 3 seats in the College of Cardinals. That would be enough to get a Pope of my allies (most of the time). Otherwise, Just bang the new Pope then. It's a shame that my Cardinals is not one of the candidates for the new Papacy

Sounds like a programme screw up then
It could be that you had an excom threat and the programme just made a mistake
Or you could have been under threat but just did not get the message
But getting excommunicated after attacking a non catholic faction is weird

I think your pope-o-meter takes a plummet after you use your crusading army to attack something other than the crusade target. At least I was on perfect terms with the pope (full crosses) but when I destroyed some Byzant armies with my Crusade (which was against Jeruzalem) I had only 2 crosses left and all my allies broke their alliance with me (including the papal states).

I'm rezzing this thread cause I kinda want to know I'm right. Too scared to use my crusading armies to kick the Byzants now although I would love to. Playing LtC btw.
