    Letter from the Editor

Another month, another issue, another pill to combat carpel tunnel. We're a bit over the deadline this month, but like any good public figurehead I excuse myself from any and all blame. If we were to have published on time this month then the terrorists win... or something. In truth my team had some complications getting their articles to me this month, in no small part due to the massive cock-up by British Petroleum.

Usually my writers only need to swim a few hundred miles across the Gulf of Mexico from where I hire them cheaply in Venezuela, but this month they had to tread through good old petrol. That would have been no problem if BP hadn't deployed all those piranhas, which they subsequently lit on fire and covered with domes, in order to try and stop the leak. Unfortunately Major Darling didn't make it to my office in [classified], and is presumed dead or lazy.

The good news is we managed to scrape together the wet and tattered pieces of articles in order to boast the first full, six section issue since the inception of the new format. Huzzah. The bad news or better news, depending on your inclination, is that this will be my last issue with the Eagle Standard. Next month there will be a new chap sitting atop the ivory bar stool, and I'll be retiring to my country estates before they mount an insurrection and attempt to liquidate the exorbitant offshore holdings I've amassed during my tenure.

Well that's it then. I hope you enjoy this month's offering. This has been Augustus Lucifer, AKA AL, AKA The Pulverizer, AKA Fat Tony, AKA That guy I am, signing off for the Eagle Standard.

    Empire and Napoleon News
News coverage of the Empire and Napoleon events that occurred in the month of April.

This month: The new wave of modders are changing everything from flags to hats to the types of posturing available to generals during engagement. Okay I'm not so sure about that last one, but flags and hats and overhauls galore, that much is certain.
    Medieval II and Kingdoms News
News coverage of the Medieval II and Kingdoms events that occurred in the month of April.

This month: Pieces on God Save The King and Claimants, Heirs, and Conquerors headline a short wrap up of some of the month's happenings. There's also a rather angry looking gent in the Gallery who is none too pleased with how infrequently you're reading the ES. Yes you.
    Total War Eras News
News coverage of the Total War Eras events that occurred in the month of April.

This month: Killerbee kicks off with some news, covering the RS2 Preview and contracting a Cap'n to touch on Aristeia, but then the news stops coming in and he just keeps rambling on and on and on and on...
    The Captain's Cabin
Interviews with modders about mods... and life... but mainly mods.

This month: We corner -TopCat- and force him to answer all of our questions on Europe in Conflict, then we bug druvatar to enlighten us about the process of getting a hosted mod forum.
    The Lookout Post
Reviews of completed mods for TW platforms.

This month: Saint Nicholas takes a look at the old standard Stainless Steel, in the hopes of netting the one TWC user on stolen internet in Botswana who hasn't already played it.
    The Artist's Gallery
Coverage of PotW, TotW, AARs, and other creative sections.

This month: Stories, tales, and pictures, oh my! The usual coverage of the various competitions and aggregation of new AAR offerings is back this month with more virility than ever.

Well, please excuse me to go and clean all the tomato off... I'M BACK! Anyway, we have gone to a great amount of trouble to get these articles for you to read so please enjoy! On the Shelves
The latest and greatest! The newest and bluest! The... Well, you get the idea.

A lot of new excellent mods have been released in the last month so here are the ones we have written about.

The Great War - A WW1 Mod (NTW)
Now this is a mod I have gotten very excited over as you will probably notice by the lengthy review (and Tharogros’ bribes helped :P). WW1 was probably the last of the old style wars and would make an excellent Total War mod. This mod gives you access to all of the major WW1 Factions and at the start of the game you will have accurate diplomatic relations so you will have to battle your way through Europe. Factions such as Belgium, Greece and Switzerland are playable in this mod to give you a full line-up of WW1 factions.

There are some issues with the mod that need to be fixed like the unit descriptions, which need to be updated, more units are needed in the game and the flags could be better quality, but I’m sure in the future the team will update it so that those are all ironed out. There have been more units added in, such as Commonwealth units for Britain, which are available at ports to symbolize having them shipped in. I have bugged Thoragaros enough for him to include the Australian Light Horse into the line-up of commonwealth troops and there are also other Australian Units available. Some trench warfare has also been added with the option of having Earthworks at the beginning of every battle.

The power of artillery has been increased and there is also mustard gas and other gases. Just to show the effectiveness of gas, I thought I’d include this screenshot:
    .

This mod looks excellent for an early BETA. I truly want this mod to be developed and shaped more and I think that they really deserve to be a hosted mod on TWC once the small issues are tweaked and fixed. Good luck to the mod team, let's hope they can get this mod running smoothly and successfully.

    Army of Napoleon (NTW)
It would seem that the month is all about units, as we bring you another unit mod, this time for the French. Once again the creator has done a brilliant job of creating historically accurate units, implementing them and making sure they work.

A highlight of this mod is the implementation of the Gribeavaul/Year XI system of artillery for the French, representing their two era's of artillery, the old and the new, and representing how they changed. In addition to this many units have been re-skinned to create a 'New army' style which represents a newer army whilst some still wear the old uniform, representing their becoming obsolete.

    1805 Proper Hats Mod (NTW)
Have you been walking down the street and happened to take a glance at someone's head? Surely we've all been there done that. Ever had a gander at the upper regions of your fellow man? Had a quick look and cried out "nice hat!".
    .

Well, bringing you some more nice hats for your NTW game is ♔EmperorBatman999♔ that old chestnut. Outfitting the various factions of NTW with really cool looking dinosaur head hats; don't they look smart! Any duffer will sure be impressed with what is on offer here today ladies and gents. Strike up the drum, download the mod and prepare to put on your hat.

The Rights of Man II (NTW)
Now, I'm sure that almost everybody that visits TWC's front page will know of The Rights of Man Mod for ETW. Well, this is the sequel of the ETW mod and will change your NTW Campaign and Battle Experience a lot. The main features of The Rights of Man II is tweaking and changing the game's AI, making it not so artificial and seemingly more fluid. The AI decision making is now more realistic which provides for a lot more realistic gameplay. The battle physics have been tweaked and movement speed, lethality of the bullets and the projectile ballistics are accurate for the weapons of the time. They've also added some new units into the game to make the unit-crazed players happy so that they don't riot all over their thread. Dozens more small tweaks have been made to the game, including correct unit and building descriptions to increase historical accuracy.

Bart 07 Units Add-On Mod (NTW)
This brilliantly crafted mod from Bart 07 brings about a massive tide of new units for NTW. A whopping 102 New Units and 212 Minor Faction units have been added into the game, creating a depth of units not seen before (at least not in the history of N:TW). Such units as the Middle Guard, the Portugese Legion, Royal Marines and Landwehr Cavalry have been added. At least one unit has been added to each faction, and there is also an AOR recruitment system.

Fantastic work Bart 07, check out the mod for yourself, and make sure you give him some rep. Otherwise you may just see all of his lovely new units at your doorstep, firing their weapons at you.

Pirate Uber Allies Mod V1.6 (ETW)
G’day me hearties! I will now show you the only ETW mod that I covered this month: Pirate Uber Allies. This mod makes the Pirates an actual playable faction and gives them more units to play with on the land. Now your battlefield will be filled with pirate women in low-cut tops fighting it out; that’s anyone’s dream! This mod makes the pirate faction more realistic with better quality troops and more units.

Napoleon Total Flags and Epic Music Mod (NTW)
That's right, they're back. Well technically they never left. This brilliant eye-candy mod is so good we decided to feature it again, so bossy Fozzie up there has tasked me with writing another thing about them. Where do I begin?

That's right, I remember now. Not only does this mod make your eyes not hurt anymore — although they may hurt after prolonged exposure to such beauty — it also makes your ears not bleed anymore. You heard correctly, JFC has brought you music. Such songs as 1000 Ships from the Underworld, He's a Pirate and Summon the Dragons shall be making their way to a speaker near you. So crank up the volume and listen.

    Better Renders Mod (NTW)
Ok, next a favourite mod of mine by the Duffers, KillzoneGB and Brigadier Graham. If you are looking for a mod to graphically improve your game this is the one for you!! It consists of the following features: significantly improved renders, textures look clearer on battle map areas, smoother frame rates, and better FPS, thus better performance without sacrificing quality.

They offer at present 4 versions of the mod to choose from depending on your PC spec, and there will be more to come as these boys have all the knowledge from their previous version on Empire Total War. Not only that, the Duffers also have some really helpful tools that you can download to enhance other areas of your PC performance in game, a must have for any Nappy owner!!

    Beale's Regiments (NTW)
Warning: Not for those who despise correct uniforms. Read the terms and conditions before playing.

Fellow duffer and brilliant modder Marshal Beale has decided to release a mini-mod in conjunction with his main one — which now has it's own sub-forum — which is a simple eye-candy enhancement. The Prussian, Russian and French commanders suddenly decided that they want a change, and with Beale playing god he put their correct hats on, so that they may go back to conquering the world. A brilliant little mod from the Marshal, it is a must have if you haven't already got Napoleon: Order of War.

England Expects! A British Naval Crew Mod (NTW)
We, the NTW players of TWC expect to have better Naval Crews! And that is what this mod delivers. England Expects changes the textures of all of the Naval Crews to make them more in tune with the time period. The Marines now carry accurate uniforms for this time period of His Majesties Navy. The Able Seamen of the ship also have different uniforms and the Officers on Deck look a lot more smart with their new uniforms. Combine this with Brigadier Graham's Sea Tunes to have the ultimate Naval Battle Experience.

    Portuguese Unit Pack (NTW)
Now, a mod for a minor, even if it is Portugal. :P

This quaint mod brings us six new units for Portugal, complete with brilliant unit information cards. The six new units are Cabo Frio Line Auxiliaries, Pardo Line Infantry, Sao Jose Auxiliaries, Candelaria Auxiliaries, Santa Rita Auxiliaries and Dragoes Reias de Minas. All of these are brilliantly, and no doubt painstakingly skinned, and the creator should be commended for his brilliant effort.

Army of Francis - An Austrian Unit Pack by General Cornwallis (NTW)
We now present to you another unit mod that will make all of you Austrians go c-razy. This mod is made by one of the newer modders on TWC but do not be fooled! It is an excellent repack mod and adds a lot of interesting and historically accurate units into NTW. Even old Toony boy has given praise to the creator for this mod. It is greatly recommended for all people that want more Austrian units in the game.

    Other announcements strut their stuff.

We found some good looking previews in the NTW section now that the young modders are beginning to really speed up their mod production.

Imperial Splendour - The Grand Coalition Preview (NTW)
Now a lot of the outdated and silly old duffers we know as ETW Players will know that Imperial Splendour was an excellent mod that improved Empire’s experience and is embraced on the Front Page. Well, this is the sequel. I know, I know, sequels aren’t usually as good but this is not Hollywood. This Imperial Splendour mod adds some new features into the game to make it a better experience and give a change to all of those bored people. Fire drills have been added into NTW and are much more organized than in ETW. The gameplay is more balanced since the unit stats have been changed to even out the playing field. Some new units have also been added into IS to satisfy the hunger of those unit-crazed monkeys that play NTW, and now there's many more historically based units in the mod. The team of IS have also employed the help of the great Brigadier Graham to add some realistic battle tunes into the mod with Drums, Fifes and Bagpipes. And since this mod is only in its building stages they need more people to help with it and give them support.

The Battle Smoke Mod Preview (NTW)
The Battle Smoke Mod for NTW will vastly change your battle experience in NTW by adding more smoke, making the musket smoke hang around longer, having different ship explosions and omitting more smoke when they are destroyed. A lot of changes are being made that will make the battlefield look dramatically more realistic. Now it will look like the battlefield is full of cigarette smoking blokes. And remember that this is a WIP so if you’d like to see this completed take a look at the thread and lend a hand.

Haz’s Military Recruitment mod changes many things on how units are recruited, where they are recruited and their progression as they are upgraded. Researching units will be more accurate and this mod makes technologies and units more historical through more accurate recruitment stats and times. There are also certain regions that have unique units which are only available in that region. I hope that this mod is completed because it has much potential.

Don't let the name fool you...

Well, another tidal wave of tools and tutorials have popped up this month for all the new NTW and ETW modders out there.

    Tutorial: Enabling Two Rank Fire

Thoragoros has taken some time out to create a multitude of tutorials designed to enhance your NTW gaming experience. While the man has a small book to his name just about, I can only tell you about one of his tutorials, that is enabling more of your men to fire by rank! Yes if you're upset that only the front row is firing then this is the tutorial for you! Watch as your newly unlocked firing abilities decimate the enemy and turn him into canned soup. For the bloodthirsty or just plain evil, give yourself the arms you need, don't worry about the tools that god gave you, throw them out and use this tutorial!

    Tutorial: AI Campaign Bonuses

A nice little tutorial on getting to grips with changing the bonuses and handicaps to the player and AI during campaign games.

Tutorial: Changing Firing Arcs for Cannons

Have you ever wanted your cannons in game to fire like Howitzers?? Now they can with this excellent tutorial! Basically you have 7 very easy steps to get this one going in game.

    Tutorial: Projectile Basics

This is a great mod for all those wishing longer battles in game, I for one think Nappy Total War is like playing World War 1 sometimes as the battles seem to be finished too quickly, but not with this mod!! By making some small adjustments in the db files tables you can reduce the effects of firepower to muskets, cannons etc, and make those games last longer, OR increase the stats and you can have 50mm Browning Machine gun battles all day long, the choice is yours!!

Tutorial: An Access Database to Mod NTW Land Units

Hazbones has created an MS Access 2007 Database to mod land units. The database is a basic tool that is meant to help those people that prefer a visual step-by-step method of how to create a custom unit or modify stats of units, and it helps when doing mass unit modding because you have all the tool features that Access offers to speed up data entry and search/sorting.

Tutorial: How to become a Modder and how to make a Mod

Well I think the title speaks for itself! This is a great little guide from Marshal Beale and will be an ongoing project on setting up your first mod. He is also looking to cover areas of GIMP and Photoshop in the near future. Designed for newcomers in mind, but also a nice reminder to us old hands on making that first mod, for any who have forgotten how to of course.

Medieval II and Kingdoms News (Coverage by Viking Prince, Dewy, & The Dutch Devil)

Welcome to the seventh installment of Medieval II and Kingdoms News.

A light month. Perhaps the college students in our ranks had something better to do running up to the end of the semester, or maybe spring fever has hit. The coverage would be better if you all were to send in your own bits and pieces of the news. If we like it and print it -- you get the by line. If we like you, you might get drafted.

If there is a mistake here, I take the blame. If anything seems outstanding and worthy of compliments — rep my assistants. They deserve the rep even if (oh never mind — you get the idea). Now on to the NEWS!

God Save the King ~ Beta Release Update

The God Save the King mod is based on a forum RPG right here in TWC. It starts in the year 1224AD in Medieval England. The map is all England so fans of the Britannia Campaign will love this mod. It features 27 all new factions with new shields and banners. The factions represent each Noble House and each faction has its own starting territories. The House of Lancaster is the Royal House at the beginning of the game and there are other Royal Houses such as the Scottish Crown and Welsh Crown. The mod itself depicts a time of struggle and rebellions in the world of the GSTK RPG.

Many Noble Houses are turning on each other and you must find allies among the other Nobles to try and salvage what is left of the Nobility. All of the different factions are hungry for land and you must race the other Nobles to secure the rebel lands and gain more power. The House of Wilson controls the legendary Nottingham Castle and very few Nobles disturb him but to the North the House of Davis is vying for more power and will gain it at any cost in any way. In Wales the Welsh nobles are also struggling for land and the Llewellyn has allied with two English houses, which has displeased the Welsh Crown.

This mod provides the player with a large amount of drama and diplomatic tension between Noble Houses. You must try and gain strong alliances in order to win and keeping those alliances is hard when all everybody wants is more land and power. You'll have many hours of fun while playing as a multitude factions. I’d highly recommend any to download the BETA and give it a go. And if you’d like to see this mod developed more, drop into their sub-forum and give them some much needed help.

    Claimants, Heirs, and Conquerors
Claimants, Heirs, and Conquerors (ChC from now on), is a new mod for Kingdoms. ChC features a fight for domination in renaissance Southwest Europe and Northern Africa. The ChC team is trying to create a dynamic end game similar to Europa Universalis 3 with the inclusion and heavy emphasis of the colonisation of the Americas. After a fanatical debate about the current faction line up is set, including at the time of writing 22 playable factions. The mod leader (druvatar) has made it clear that the mod is set in a historical context, but the mod is about gameplay, so there will be a few historical inaccuracies. The mod, while having a stable alpha version — for developers only — is still a fair amount of time away from having a public release. Currently one out 22 factions has new models/skins.

If you're the kind of person that likes historical mods, but enjoy gameplay features that are fun while not historically accurate, you owe it to yourself to go and check out ChC and support the mod.

Lands to Conquer ~ Random Maps v3
    FLASH FROM THE PAST!
This mod was released in December but did not invite much comment.

Lands to Conquer: Random Maps v3 is a wonderful supplement for the Lands to Conquer mod. It'll come with a few different rectangular maps and 15 different campaigns each with different starting positions offering many unique experiences. To my great surprise this mod also adds some new units, new traits and new events.

But sadly this mod still feels very raw and unfinished. For instance, because of the new campaign map, the mini-map in the left bottom of the united interface is "broken", since you can look past the sides of the mini-map:
    .

This small bug isn't much of a game breaker, but added to the fact that the campaign map still has some oddly placed tiles which will sometimes give an awkward feeling whilst playing, it is noticeable. The lesser parts set aside, this mod sure is fun to play and if alhoon keeps developing it, eliminates the bugs and adds in more content this mod will surely reach new heights.

Res Gestae AoR 'n Mercs recruitmentSee? I knew there would be a reason for entering my Eras news too late. This preview only showed up several days ago! But ah well, what does it matter? Onto the preview! Well, this is one of the best AoR previews I've seen this far. Rather than explaining this over-the-top complex system that no one really needs or cares about because they just want to blast other dudes to smithereens with whatever arsenal they get, or telling which unit with incredibly original name comes from which region that no one who doesn't have a degree in ancient geology knows; these dudes have it properly explained for the average citizen.

Easy-to-understand pictures on an even easier-to-understand map (unless you're 4 and don't know anything about geology, even though you need to be 13 or older on this site). Ah well, hurray for simplicity! Which is quite ironic because the sentences in this article are quite long and boring. See, totally wasting your time. Seriously, just watch the preview man! Then do something useful afterward to compensate the loss of time.

CATW Alternative UnitsA new preview for CATW, this time showing some barbarian units. A juicy detail (or not :P): the units were originally naked (like, totally showing their wank), but due to requests of players, he made trousered versions of 'em. Agreed, extremely lame :P. The mod leader (cocobongoclub-DJ) said that almost everything is done for v3.0, so hopefully I'll be able to post this in the 'New Masterpieces' section next time!

Aristeia Patch 1.1Well now we come to the Aristeia v1.1 Patch for RTW. This mod has added a lot of new traits and stats into the campaign of RTW to make it a little more accurate. It focuses on covering The Trojan War Era and making it closer to what is seen in literature, pottery and so on. V1.1 fixes a lot of bugs that were in the previous version and makes it easier and more enjoyable to play. It also improves upon the accuracy of the previous version with some newer traits and descriptions. This patch is highly recommended to any player of the old one. It is, however, not compatible with saves of the old version so make sure to finish them before installing this patch.

This is bad. A whole month, and no new release, or even a sub-mod! I don't like this section anymore! Nah, just kidding. But seriously now. To compensate the lack of news for the Eras news, we have some trivia, some tutorial overviews, and even a UNIT PREVIEW coming up! That's right, we're squeezing every last bit of juice out of this frikken platform!

    Trivia
Undoubtedly the least original but most to-the-point title ever

    Trivia
    Did you know that:
    • Rome Total Realism is considered the first big mod for Rome Total War? It was the first mod to change all sorts of things, rather than just a faction re-skin or a bug fix every now and then.

    • There already was a mod in 2005 (approx. 1 year after RTW release) that had models and animations in it that even now are considered almost impossible to do. And then we have dudes in M2TW complaining that animating a Balrog is tough! My ass!

    • Roma Surrectum 2.0 has about 3GB worth of files? That's almost as much as my copy of Rome Total War: Gold Edition, which has Rome Total War patched to version 1.5 + Barbarian Invasion. Yes, it's that big.

    • The Lord of the Rings: Total War was founded after the creator(wlesmana) had turned a hastati into a Gondorian soldier.

    • Most big Rome: Total War mods with a large enough fanbase are planning to move the mods to M2TW after their mod for Rome Total War is released.

Yes, these trivia are extremely boring and non-interesting. But it's better than nothing, right? RIGHT??

    Sneak Peek
Mythology: Total War Unit PreviewBecause I promised you guys a unit preview, here's one from the mod team that has already delivered you the mind-blowing Sparta:TW mods (kidding :P). Currently working on Myth:TW, we're trying to combine RS2.0 unit quality with Blue Lotus: TW monsters. Actually it's just to raise popularity on both sides. A win-win. Actually a win-win-win, 'cause you readers also get something good. We're so sweet, aren't we?

Editor's Note: April Fools? Belated. Killerbee tried to link to images but the links aren't working right now. We'll try and fix that ASAP.

Please rep the creator of these units, Solo1906 for his awesome work!

    Tutorial Summary
For this month's edition, we'll list some of the best and/or greatest tutorials that are made for the RTW community:

    Units:
    - RTW Skeletons cracked Perhaps one of the biggest breakthroughs in RTW history. Sounds so exciting. And it is. Just look at the videos! Wlesmana (creator of LOTR:TW) has just given Rome: Total War some fresh air! We have animated bowstrings, complex animations, and all that kind of stuff that completely rocks. It's also included in the following tutorial.
    - The Complete Animations Guide This is undoubtedly one of the most needed tutorials. Animations have so little documentation, and PatrcicanS really guides us step-by-step through animation-making, and he's made an easy-to-understand tool. What more could you want?
    - Basic Modeling Tutorial Not hosted on this site, this tutorial is reaaally helpful when you want to create a unit for the first time (meaning modeling and skinning). Shows techniques of creating weapons and such, as well as UV-Mapping and some minor skinning tips.

    Maps:
    - Myrddraal's Mapping Essentials This is just the tutorial that every mapper, new or experienced should read. Has information on all files and guides you through the process of making a map, be it simply adding new regions or creating a whole new map. You might even say it's the mapper's bible, or is that being a bit too freaky?
    - TiMe Project This is a tool that's comparable with Geomod for M2TW. It's an easy-to-use map editor for those who don't wanna do boring coding. Not entirely bug-free though.
    - BDH's guide to map_heights Awesome tutorial if you want to make an historical map! You should definitely read it, it guides you through the process of making a geographically correct map_heights file.

Next time we'll feature the other tutorials (Scripting, Coding, Miscellaneous)

Ok guys, that was it for this edition. We're sorry for the lack of news but it's not something we decide :) I know the replacement sections are less exciting (except for the unit preview perhaps :P), but at least I tried, ay?

    Killerbee signing out.

Oh, hello, I didn't see you there. Come to partake in the bountiful offerings of the Major's bosom I see. Well the Major is out, and he ain't coming back, ya hear? You're welcome to mosey around though and partake of the buffet. We've got an interview with -TopCat-, potato salad, green bean casserole, an interview with druvatar, california rolls, and a homemade apple pie.

    Europe in Conflict
    A Napoleon TW gameplay modification

Well here we are folks, today I am talking with the creator of the Europe in Conflict mod for NTW, -TopCat-. I asked him all manner of modding questions and he has done a great job of getting lengthy and detailed answers back to me.

Interview with -TopCat- on.. Europe in Conflict
    1. When did you join TWC and why?
I joined TWC on June 14 2009. To be perfectly honest I can't remember exactly why I joined, even though it was such a short while ago! My first post was to release a small mod for Empire: Total War which unlocked the Highlanders unit for Great Britain. I was very proud of it at the start but soon found out what it compared to when I discovered the Hosted Mods sub-forum.

    2. How long after buying Napoleon Total War did you start working on modding it?
Well I had some experience of modding from Empire TW, and I had worked on a mod right up until my copy of Napoleon arrived in the post. At that point I felt I deserved a break, so I spent a few weeks just playing Napoleon and seeing what it had to offer. I was very impressed with it, especially its stability — I think we were all wary of another Empire-like release. But after a time playing it I began to see where I though I could improve it. I suppose one thing lead to another and here I am now spending more time with the Pack File Manager on my computer screen than the game itself!

    3. Who is on the Mod Team for Europe in Conflict?
I am the the leader of the team and DoomBunny666 is the other "chief" modder. Together we do most of the concept and game development, but we aren't alone. We have a team of researchers including smark74, Lil Jazzer and fish food carl. Then we have Frederich Barbarossa who is leading our creative writing team. Aside from that we have had input form Guy (2D artwork), ulti (startpos editing and forum managing) and Capt. Fozdike (forum managing). As you can see we have quite a mixed bunch there, but even so we still welcome new members.

    4. How hard was it to put together the team?
I have to say, this team came together easier than most. Myself and DoomBunny666 had worked on an older project called Continents in Conflict: 1809 (for Empire) together. I also lead that team, but due to a serious lack of manpower it only ever achieved beta stage. We both had ideas about what could and should be done to Napoleon, so after a few weeks of playing got together and started work on Europe in Conflict (we decided to carry part of the name on from the Empire project). When we released the Beta we got good general feedback and we got some requests from people looking to join the team as researchers. After this the mod picked up some speed and we found it easier to recruit people, especially from classified ads in the General resource centre. This had been the problem with the previous mod — it didn't take up enough for people to want to join. As well as that we were only doing modeling and skinning work before the Beta, so new recruits needed to be pretty highly skilled.

    5. What are some of the new features in Europe in Conflict?
Well, where to start? We've overhauled the morale system so that troops now rout at realistic levels — in vanilla N:TW they mightn't rout until 80% casualties — and musket lethality is now based on range. As well as that we've introduced shell-shock; morale follows a bell-shaped curve style whereby new recruits have the lowest morale. They then peak and eventually drop back to just above recruit level. This is well documented in many wars when veteran troops weren't as eager as the young recruits after seeing what war could really do to people. This was used in some older Empire mods, but I feel it works very well with the new level of importance of generals that N:TW promotes. This is supplemented by the "realistic campaigning" feature which makes fighting in an enemy land much more doable. There are many other changes, including an overhaul of how sieges are played etc. It's only a Beta yet, and needs quite a bit of polishing, but the best way for you to see everything is to get over to the thread in the Released Mods forum and see it for yourself.

    6. What do you think will be in store for Europe in Conflict in the future?
We are currently working on v1.0 and it's going to be pretty big. We are balancing all of the factions so that they are historically accurate for starters. After that we are introducing a brand new tech tree — it will be at least 75% new material. We also plan on introducing many new building types and a naval overhaul. We're aiming at a type of gameplay where the tech tree and buildings have a much bigger influence on the game — troop and equipment quality will completely depend on your economy in v1.0. You will also be able to "downgrade" your troops — if your economy can't cope you can stop supplying your troops with the most expensive equipment and even reduce their supply levels.

I suppose in a more long term view I'd just like EiC to be eventually seen as one of the better realism mods out there — but we still have a long way to go.

    7. When did you first start modding TW Games?
Pretty much after Empire came out. In the beginning I learned to make a mod for my own personal use and released it. After that it just developed when I realized all the things that could be done via modding.

    8. How many mods approximately have you been a part of?
2 - both of which I lead, one of which is dead (:( ). I've released my own various standalone mods, but I think I prefer the atmosphere of team modding.

    9. For you what is the hardest aspect of modding?
That's a question that can be answered in many ways. Some would say it's the parts that can't yet be done i.e. map making. Others would say it's figuring out the more obscure entries in the db tables. For me, I think it has to be dealing with people. Keeping the team together can be difficult at times, and even harder than that is keeping morale up. It really doesn't help when you go long periods of time without a release or when some changes are badly received. I think it's rewarding though; if the team works well together the results are going to reflect that.

    10. What would be your favorite TW Mod?
That's a difficult one! There has been so many great TW mods over the last few years, but I think I'll have to go for DarthMod, simply because it's been there for every TW game since Rome and provided consistent game improvements. (Here's hoping for DarthMod Napoleon!)

Well there we are, ladies and gentlemen. Hope you enjoyed the interview and it provided you with a lot of information!

-TopCat-'s mod can be found here.

Viking Prince gets druvatar's take on the matter

I recently asked druvatar what it took to get Claimants, Heirs, and Conquerors (ChC) established as sub-forum in modifications in development. I then thought that this process might be a good bit of information for all of the aspiring future modders who like to call TWC home. I know the old pros among our readers already know this tale, but for others this topic may be of interest.

druvatar started with a single thread idea in Wips, Ideas, and Proposals. It then branched out into several WIP threads and underwent a few small Beta releases. For the rest, I will let him tell the tale.

druvatar addresses.. How does a mod get a hosted mod forum?
It takes a singular focus on the project! I needed to show the administration here at TWC how diligent, active, and determined I was. I actively participated in mod development. I did not simply wait and hope for others and their interest to develop.

It took extreme patience and a calm head! There were endless and tedious attempts by trial and error. The trail of CTDs is historic!

I needed to produce quality work. Again, it is sometimes painstaking and involves relentless trial and error attempts. The production of quality and professional work takes time.

I was able to show the administration that I was committed. I needed a serious and focused/controlled vision for the mod. I had gone from being a complete "newbie" to a decent/proficient modder in months! I now was capable of producing quality 2D art and all other major aspects of M2TW modding.

So to recap, you should start with a WIPs thread. You should have a member or two helping out, but you need to be doing the work as well. I also suspect that you should have some accomplishments to show. This was more than an idea, but less than a finished product. This means some concrete aspects of the development prior to the sub forum creation. Do you have any 2D for the project? How about any 3D for the project? How about some faction research? Mapping? Scripting? I know it was not complete, but there must be some progress to show.

I don't know if druvatar could have outlined this process before he started, but I am appreciative that he took the time to write it down for me to share with our readers. The next question for him to answer will be after the even longer and more tedious process of getting a mod development idea into a released form. I will be waiting for the chance to do that interview.

The Lookout Post (Coverage by Saint Nicholas)

Welcome all to another edition of the Lookout Post, where we take a look at one of the major modifications for the Total War games. This month I decided to take on the challenge of reviewing one of the biggest mods on TWC and surely one that has had a large following on M2TW for a long time. I speak of course of Stainless Steel. This mammoth game is my mod of choice for this month. So sit back, read, relax, enjoy and try not to fall asleep at the wheel.

    Stainless Steel 6.2 Review

Stainless Steel was released some years ago now for Medieval II and later incorporated into the expansion, Kingdoms; it has since become massively popular and is widely considered to be a must have mod when playing Medieval II Kingdoms. People have been shot for playing without it, seriously. The latest version offered to date is version 6.2, featuring only small changes from 6.1 but with much added difficulty. Most players have decided to continue playing with 6.1 however as there is a plethora of sub mods available, while 6.2 has next to none. Many players choose Stainless Steel just for the sub mods, they are that good. But I'm here to talk about the main mod itself, Stainless Steel 6.2.

What can I say in opening? Wow. That's right, that single word defines this mod. It might surprise you that this mod looks and feels somewhat like the vanilla game, but once we pop da hood and take a deeper look we certainly discover this mod is anything but. Stainless Steel has taken the vanilla game and improved upon it immensely. Team leader and creator of the mod, King Kong has clearly created a masterpiece. Expanding exponentially on the original, Stainless Steel offers a gaming experience like no other mod of its kind. Popular opinion is that Stainless Steel is how the game should have been upon release.. but that's another story. The mod has a huge list of changes, impossible to detail them all here; but the main things are: completely redone and reworked AI, a totally new map that includes far more settlements, more factions and plenty and I mean plenty of new UI and graphical changes to the game overall.

Let's start with the map and factions. A brand new super size map has been designed for the mod. According to King Kong, the map has been created using real satellite data, historical maps and references. Quite a feat if you ask me, that one can use such resources to create a highly detailed and extremely well put together map for you to play the Grand Campaign on. Players of this mod will be thoroughly impressed with the map and world design. Rivers and lakes abound, hills and mountains are all over the place, the coasts are mostly smooth and the deserts are extremely hot. You really get the sense that you are actually playing in the medieval world when you look at this map, it is stunning to the eye. Add to that the fact that the mod uses the maximum number of settlement slots, around 200 I believe, and you have yourself a massively expanded and redesigned grand battlefield on which to wage war. The scope of this game is truly epic; once you play it, you won't want to play any other mod and certainly not vanilla.

But that's not all, as if the reworked map and more regions wasn't enough, the mod also includes a myriad of new factions. From Ireland on the British Isles to the Knights Templar in the Holy lands, there is a new faction to be played on almost every part of the world. Of course, these new factions add new dynamics to the regions they are present in. No longer is the British Islands a battle between the Scots and English, a new player is in town and this 3 way contest just got a bit more exciting. I feel that the addition of factions and inclusion of many more settlements really adds a great amount of depth and strategy to the game. In the vanilla game taking settlements was pretty easy and the various empires around the world were only made up of 4-6 settlements, so the player was quite easily able to topple an empire and absorb enemy lands into his own dominion. This is not the case with Stainless Steel. AI factions now have much bigger empires and many more settlements in which to train troops and build weapons of war. You will find it is not so easy to destroy a rival faction now, as it should be.

The AI of Stainless Steel is one of the best I've seen. AI armies are composed mostly of varied troop types that are equipped to deal with any army on any terrain. A good mix of cavalry, infantry and ranged units ensure that the AI has a fighting chance against any aggressor. The campaign AI is particularly good, actively seeking out and taking rebel settlements, landing armies in naval invasions and waging hard fought wars on their neighbours. You won't find the AI making stupid decisions like blockading your port for one turn and then sailing away the next, those flaws are reserved for the vanilla game only. The AI is also improved in diplomacy, pursuing trade rights and useful alliances and also being a lot more reasonable. AI factions that are winning a war are not likely to give up and agree to a ceasefire. On the flip side, AI factions that are being beaten badly and have basically no armed forces left are much more likely to agree to surrender and become a vassal. The AI mimics the choices a human player would make in the same situation and that is impressive. Gone is the ridiculous diplomacy system from the vanilla game, where you could start a war with a faction and then demand a ceasefire and 5000 florins payment the next turn; and have the AI think it's very generous! No no, you won't see that in Stainless Steel. The AI is light years ahead of what CA produced originally, sad to say it but it's true.

Onto the units and graphical side now, this part of the mod is equally as impressive. The unit skins have been completely redesigned. Gone are the boring and plain unit cards and skins of vanilla, replaced with rich colourful designs and emblems, shields, helmets and weapons. Not only that, each faction features totally new units; as if re-skinning all the vanilla ones wasn't enough to please you! There has also been changes to mercenaries and recruitment pools, and new mercenary units are available for hire if one is in the right region. The faction symbols have all been reworked as well, giving the game an entirely new feel. Also, you'll see on the map the new models that have been incorporated into the game. New Captain and General models, new siege and trade lane models just add some great wow factor to the game. Stainless Steel's graphical improvements and additions are numerous. There is even a brand new movie intro that we see when firing up the mod, made by the team to introduce Stainless Steel, a welcome little addition.

However, all of the above features pale in comparison to the RPG elements introduced into this mod. This game sucks you in. How, you ask? Your characters are now your babies. You will see them born, you will watch them grow up and come of age, you will send them to admin school or military tech and watch them learn, you'll make them a governor of a city or one of your leading Generals, you'll be there when he falls and when he triumphs. There has been extensive changes to traits and many additions to retinues and ancillaries. Characters can now earn titles, such as The Privy Seal which grants some nice bonuses. These titles function much the same way they did in Medieval I, except you can't grant them, they are automatically gained in time.

As well as new titles and traits, the player has the option of training their character at a school. When a male family member comes of age, they are born with an aptitude for either administrative duties or military duties. Sending your man to a settlement or castle will start the training in the corresponding discipline and in a few years, your youngling will emerge with a basic understanding of tactics or taxation. From here, you can further develop your lad by upgrading your schools or utilizing your guy's talents in war or governance. If anyone has ever thought that the vanilla game was boring and lacked interesting things to do with your character, then you need to play Stainless Steel. This new education system is great and you'll feel a real sense of caring when you are developing your characters. Training and teaching them makes them more human and we as humans tend to get attached to something we've invested a lot of time and effort in. You will now actually care if your family member is killed in battle or dies of old age, as all the talent and experience will be lost forever, if you don't pass on those important ancillaries to his son that is.

Also featured in this mod is a new army supply system which adds great depth and another dimension to managing an army. You won't be able to just lay siege and wait for the defenders to give up anymore. Each turn your army is out of a settlement and in the field, their General's status and health will slowly decline. After a turn you might find your troops morale is slightly lessened as food is beginning to run out. After a few more turns you'll see that your General is in a much weakened condition and the men are in low spirits. This new dynamic really adds a new layer of planning to your campaigns. You can't afford to wait around for reinforcements or run around the countryside looking for an elusive enemy. Attacks must be well planned and swift if you want to achieve optimal efficiency from your army. While I do admit this feature can be annoying to those unused to it, I believe it is a welcome addition to the game that players will get a lot of enjoyment from when they learn the way to conducting an efficient and well supplied campaign.

Its been all rosy up to this point, but like anything in life, there is a good side and a bad. You've been reading up on the good side (hopefully) but now it's time to look at a few of the let downs in this mod. For one, it doesn't run too well on my system. Now I know you are going to get this complaint just about everywhere you go. People have different systems that are older and are probably in need of an upgrade, my system is in that category no doubt. It is great that this mod includes so much, but for those that have an older system, the game will not run too well for you. The inclusion of so many things and the detailed map will slow your game down and you will experience a drop in FPS. This is unfortunate in that this will likely deter a few players from digging deep into the mod and getting the most enjoyment out of it.

Turn times are also another big let down here, while they aren't overly burdensome like in Empire they aren't quick like in the vanilla game. Expect to be waiting for around a minute each time you hit that hourglass; it's not that big of a deal but still worth mentioning I think. Probably the only other issue I wanted to raise was the big download size. If you haven't played Stainless Steel before and you opt for the full SS 6.0 + 6.1 + 6.2 + minipatch install (like I did) you're looking at close to 2 gigabytes of data allowance gone, down the gurgler. While you would expect a mod of this size that includes so many changes to be this large, those players that have a small data allowance or slow internet will be hard pressed to get this mod and in a timely manner; watch you don't exceed your bandwidth! You may need to download this mod over a period of a few days. :P

In conclusion, this mod is truly one of a kind and a must play in your lifetime. If you're tired of vanilla and want something greater from your Total War experience then this is the mod for you. It caters to all players, with something for everyone. Take the time and download it, play it and write AAR's about it, take screenshots and post them here on TWC. There is a huge community following this mod and King Kong has won multiple awards for his outstanding work and vision. Support the man that supports all of you players, play Stainless Steel. It might just change your life!

A well-written and well-researched AAR from a highly-respected author, whose work is predominantly to be found at the ORG. This story of the travails of the Ottoman Empire in ETW is told by the son of the Grand Vizier to the Sultan. It gives us a viewpoint not often found in Western literature, where the Ottomans usually take the role of the external enemy. The forces of the Empire are yet strong, but they face many threats: resurgent Persia with their militaristic Shia faith; expansionist Russia, desperately seeking a warm-water port; and the rebellious Christians of the Balkans.

There are no reviews yet (although one is planned for later this month). However, if you are interested in the author, you can find an interview he gave recently here.

    NTW AARs

Still plenty of activity in my beloved RTW area, although my own AAR is about to be relegated to page 2 (must do something about that... got... to... write!!!)
    RTW AARs

Another bumper month for M2TW; fifteen new AARs! It really is astonishing given its age and the fact that it has now been superseded by both ETW and NTW.
    M2TW AARs

NTW may be prettier and able to tap into the enormous reservoir of enthusiasm for the era of Napoleon, but the fact is that ETW offers you a whole world to play with, and an exoticism not to be found when limiting yourself to Napoleon's campaigns. This fact is borne out by its continuing popularity amongst AARtists.
    ETW AARs

Thanks to Mount & Blade Warband, we have a much-needed infusion of new stories in the non-TW section, to add to those stalwarts (mostly written by Santini it seems) which keep the section ticking over.
    Non-TW AARs

Third-Age is still very active with the community anticipating v1.5. Thanks to the huge resource that is the Lore of Middle Earth, Third Age stories are as often free-standing so-called Fan-Fiction as they are AARs.
    Third Age TW AARs

Lots of new Historical Fiction this month, mostly military.
    Historical Fiction

Work Critiques is bursting with new material! If, as a writer, you ever find yourself with writer's block, or as a reader, begin to become jaded by the AAR format, then come and look here. It will reinvigorate your imagination and show you that the possibilities really are limitless.

    Tale of the Week
from Saint Nicholas, Maestro of Tales

Welcome gentles all to yet another edition of the Tale of the Week roundup, covering the month of April this time around. What a month it has been for the competition; those that navigate regularly to the ToTW forum should notice the insane amount of stickied threads! Many tales to read and vote on, many competitions open and just waiting for that cunning writer to charge in and snatch the prize! Also a few successful challenges to comment on later in the roundup. But we have lots to cover so let's get to the winners and challenges of April shall we?

    ToTW 75a
The first successful competition run in the month of April saw the victory of Julius Barca the Great; he truly is great. Notching up another win with his gripping tale of some desperate Arabs battling it out in the desert sands.

    The Picture
    One Final Charge

The desperation was evident in the young captain's voice.

"Sir, if we mount another attack, we will be routed! The men are exhausted, hungry, and demoralized!"

His superior, the commander of the Byzantine army, Aemilianus Nikiforos, looked on impassively while the captain of the cavalry pleaded for the lives of his men.

"Finish them," ordered Nikiforos, adamant in taking the hill, a hill that, as of this morning, held a large pocket of Islamic resistance to Imperial interest.

The Byzantine Emperor had sent a large contingent of men to capture cities of the Holy Land, in an attempt to gain favor with the Christians of Europe. To avoid becoming encircled, dozens of cities and strongholds were taken along the way. Now, halfway between Antioch and Jerusalem, in the mountainous region of the Lebanon, a comparatively small force of Muslims stood their ground.

The men, with their large, thick shields and sturdy spears, formed a block and held against Byzantine advance for hours. The Captain of the cavalry, a man by the name of Pavlos, had been appalled when he had been ordered to charge his heavily-armored horsemen directly into this wall. It had been a massacre. Yet the charge was ordered a second time. And a third. Until now, only one in ten men sat on a horse. The Arabs were still strong, still energetic, full of life, it seemed.

"Mount up, men. We ride once more. Show these followers of false prophets how a Christian man does battle!"

The lancers gave a halfhearted cheer, praying, hoping against hope the Muslims would flee, knowing with certainty they would not. Pavlos led his men on one final charge, up a hill, into the snarling teeth of the enemy. One last charge, for honor, for the Empire, for Faith.

The next picture told a tale of woe. Helpless men being ambushed and slaughtered, a display of human suffering and pain. But these sorts of pictures are the best places to craft that great story, and so Don't Tread on Me did, taking the honour of this week's victor.

    A Sharpshooter's Tale

"Ain’t there one Pennsylvania man who can shoot straight?”

General Morgan’s Virginia riflemen taunted us like we were redcoats, not their allies. They were in my regiment’s camp to recruit sharpshooters for Morgan’s new special corps, but so far a lot of laughs was all they’d gotten for their trouble. When they called us lily-livered Quakers who’d apologize to a stag after shooting him, I’d had enough.

I stepped up to the line that marked 250 yards from the target, a tiny glass jar on a tree stump. I glared at the Virginians and walked back another 50 yards, prompting a chorus of hoots and guffaws.

I shouldered my rifle, aimed at the jar, and fired. The crack of the rifle was followed by the burst of shattered glass.

From that moment, I was one of Morgan’s chosen men.

I don’t know why I joined. My enlistment was due to expire at year’s end; now I was obliged to hang on till the war was over. I had broken my promise to Peggy.

It was dangerous work, too. A regular infantryman who got captured might be exchanged after a while. But the Brits saw riflemen as assassins, hiding in trees, picking off the King’s officers like we were hunting partridges. To them, we deserved the bayonet or the noose.

I didn’t have time to ponder my reasons for joining. Saratoga was our first big action.

We were skirmishing at Bemis Heights when General Morgan saw the redcoat light infantry trying to turn our flank. We darted through some woods and caught them from behind. We had them in a crossfire. We could see them waver.

Then up rode one of Burgoyne’s commanders to rally the redcoats. General Morgan hurried over and said, “Sergeant Murphy, that gallant officer is General Fraser. I admire him, but it is necessary that he should die. Do your duty."

But Fraser had just galloped back about 300 yards from our lines. I climbed a tree to get a better shot.

I wrapped my legs around a bough, its bark scraping my skin through my worn stockings and breeches. I shouldered the rifle, cocked the hammer, and looked for the enemy general. He had stopped, so I angled the rifle and prepared to fire. But just then, the infantrymen below me loosed a volley. I used my hat to wave off the acrid smoke, which had sparked a coughing fit that nearly lost me my balance. When it cleared, I saw the fool hadn’t moved, fatuously gazing at his steadying infantrymen.

I knew I would get only one shot, and that was all I needed. Fraser tumbled out of his saddle, and the redcoats closest to him started running. Soon it was a great red wave, fleeing the field.

The redcoats will call me a murderer. Peggy could call me a liar. My fellow soldiers might call me a hero. I want only to be known as a man who did his duty.

Another desert battleground is our choice of war this week. More sand and Arabs and it is still quite hot! Nevertheless, our brave writers have toiled on, baking under the hot sun for what seemed like hours. But one stood above the rest, a clear favourite and loved by the voters it can be said, Katsumoto.

    The Picture
    The Passing Smell

Death has a very peculiar smell. There is of course the stench of putrid corpses, horrifying scents emanating from bloody gashes and severed heads. The horrid smell tugs on one’s nose hairs, almost ripping them from the sensitive skin. But there is another smell, a stench so ghastly that it fills the whole body with disgust, not only entering through the nose but by every perceivable orifice, from the eye to the ear. It is the smell of souls.

Thousands of them lay scattered now across the arid sand. They were preparing themselves. Preparing themselves for the journey to the Heavens above. Most, however, would not reach its Golden Gates. Instead, they would be cast down into the inferno of the Underworld.

A sudden gust blew across the plain, scattering sand across a heap of stacked bodies. They lay lifeless, spears and swords stuck in their torsos, dead eyes rolled back. The battle had lasted several hours, both sides unable for a while to hold the advantage. One side would push hard and gain a footing against its opponent, until the other side decided to counterattack fiercely to regain its position. These counterattacks caused much of the bloodshed, the attacking side throwing themselves into the carnage, while the other valiantly defended their hard-earned place.

Now, the desert lives up to its name. Gone are the clashes of cold steel. The grunts and screams of men have also vanished with death. Only the wind blows, its hollow whistle perforating the still air.

With a whisper the smell of souls disappears. They are gone, left to fulfil whatever fate chosen for them. Even the wind has died down now, the sandy dunes calm and ready, patiently awaiting the next struggle and the passing souls that inevitably follow it.

Well that's all for the winners of the regular competition. It is a bit all over the place at the moment. With the recent shakeup in leadership and all that, ToTW is in a bit of a mess right now! Don't be afraid though, our stalwart champion Mega Tortas de bodemloze is there to save the day as always. Please note at the time the Eagle Standard went to print these competitions were/are still in need of more stories and or votes! See them here: ToTW 76b, ToTW 77a, ToTW 78a and ToTW 78b.

    Challenge: JerichoOnlyFan vs Borissomeone
The first challenge of April saw two great titans battle for dominance on a pristine plane of open land. A group of riders look on and watch as these two immortals fight, forever locked in single combat. But a careless move by one and the other manages the wounding blow! Borissomeone stands tall, smiting his foe with his extraordinary tale!

    The Picture
    The Tale (Untitled)

Broken bodies litter the ground before us, bright blood splashed over the dry ever thirsty ground adds wild colour to the drabness that fills this terrible land. Men lay in their final poses, some trying to hold flesh together, slack fingers giving in as death takes hold; insides now join the outside and bask in the dying sunlight. Looks of shock and fear ride heads that lay on the battle field, young or old all once full of life now full of dust and ended dreams.

The bright blue sky mocks the horrifying carnage below, white fingers of clouds slowly make their way over the vast dome that hangs above us. Bent banners twist and turn in the cool breath of the wind that teases the tattered pieces of cloth that once rode proud above the swirling mass of men who on this day had turned up, each side thinking the other was to lose, only to find the only winner this day were the fat carrion birds that waddled from corpse to corpse plucking and pulling choice bits from the fallen.

The sun has started to sink behind the horizon; I wonder if it seeks to hide from what it witnessed today, the stupidity of man, so many lives ended thanks to the imagined or real insults each side had traded leading up to this momentous day. A day with the cast of thousands and now we are all that is left, eleven men our shadows before us, the sun warming our backs one last time as it leaves the day behind. We are but eleven men; all that is left our shadows disappear into the darkness as this day ends.

    Challenge: Forlorn vs Katsumoto
Another challenge to report on folks and wasn't it a close one. The two competitors were neck and neck for a while but it wasn't long before one pulled ahead and took the golden chalice filled with warm foamy victory. Katsumoto digs deep and pulls off a second win in this month; surely if he keeps this up he'll have the gold MAARC medal!

    The Beast and the Blade

For days the troll had harassed the village. It had kidnapped several of the farmers, leaping out of the shrubbery to snatch them as they ploughed the fields in the scorching sun. It was near impossible to spot the green creature in the thick outback, and even if one caught a glimpse of it before it struck it would be too late, for a troll could tear a man’s limbs from his body in a matter of seconds. The farmers stood no chance.

The hero and his horse had had trodden through the dense forest for days in search of the ghastly creature, with no avail. But today would be different. His horse neighed loudly.

Out of the corner of his stern blue eyes, the hero saw it: Sitting on the weedy grass, the beast devoured the remains of one of the peasants. The warrior dismounted slowly from his steed, the heavy steel armour clinking as he carefully crept towards the troll, its back towards him. He drew his cold blade as he neared it, moving as silently as the heavy outfit allowed. The green giant continued to feast on the flesh, the sound of its chewing filling the still air of the sheltered alcove. SNAP! A twig! The three dark eyes turned instantly, meeting the hero’s gaze. It did not look happy to see him.

With a deafening howl it dashed towards him, covering the distance between them in moments. A rough fist struck him. And another. The hero recoiled, unable to compose himself, his vision blurred from the blows. The grizzled monster retreated to a small hillock, beating its chest furiously and letting out another giant war cry. It rushed at him again. He tightened his grip around his sword. This time he was ready.

With a ferocious swing the blade cut through the muscled tissue. The savage brute screamed in pain. It went berserk, charging, its heavy arms swinging wildly. The hero came forward, thrusting his longsword into its chest, the steel exiting the troll’s back in an explosion of crimson blood. A final, dying grunt left the creature’s coarse mouth, before the heavy carcass smashed into the sodden dirt. The beast was slain.

Challenge: [IMP]AntiWarmanCake88 vs {BHC} King Jan III Sobieski
The final battle of April was a battle among two brothers. Forever getting up to mischief and preying on unwary travelers, these two boys finally decided to test their mettle against each other. Quill's in hand and fresh parchment laid down in front, the two terrors wrote up a storm that was felt three galaxies away. Words were exchanged, insults and threats, but neither were dissuaded and stayed the course. Eventually after a few short eons, one of them emerged victorious and claimed the crown. {BHC} King Jan III Sobieski by name, the strongest of the two brothers. An epic conclusion to the battle of our time.

    The Tale (Untitled)

The Polish and the Swedes had been fighting a long and bloody war. Many men could not even remember when – or why – it began. All they knew was that they were sitting on this accursed battlefield, waiting for morning.

The Polish were defending their homeland. A junior commander by the name of Ladislaus Rajski sat by the campfire with some of his men. “I hope our allies last the night until reinforcements can arrive,” he mused.

“I hope WE can last the night,” another man said.

“We will; you must have faith. The Blessed Lady of Czestochowa is watching over us. As long as she here with us…” Rajski’s voice was drowned out by the whistling of a canon ball. “Rally, men, rally!” Rajski rattled his saber. The men mustered. The nettle was long and hard. Many men died. Rajski was among them.

“What will we do; our beloved commander is dead?” cried a soldier.

“Don’t you remember what Captain Rajski said last night? The Blessed Mother is watching over us! To the breech!” The men fought twice as hard as before. The Swedes began to waver slightly, but not by much. Their so-called “Lion of the North” monarch was an inspirational leader.

Then a flourish was heard. The awesome Winged Hussars had arrived. They came charging over the hill with a multitude of fury. The battle was over; a Polish victory was secured. Captain Rajski’s prediction came true. The Polish troops carried the day…with a little divine intervention.

    PotW and UesW Winners
This is kind of awkward. Well, not for me. The PotW Jumped from 179 to 190, completely skipping all numbers from 180 to 189. So don't think I blacked out chaps! UesW did continue normally though.

    PotW 190 and UesW 93 :
    PoTW 190 Winner
    UesW 93 Winner

    PotW 191 and UesW 94 :
    PoTW 191 Winner
    UesW 94 Winner

    PotW 192 and UesW 95 :
    PoTW 192 Winner
    UesW 95 Winner

Hmm. Looks like both competitions are being dominated. The UesW is almost always an RS2.0 shot, but this time, some TATW screenies finally brought some variation to the UesW competition :)

The PotW on the other hand is being dominated by Finlander (damn the scandanavian!). He has won the last two PotW competitions. Personally I couldn't see what was so special about 191, but it looks like I am in a minority on that, and no one listens to my ramblings anyway.

Signing out with a class rap, I'm just gonna clap, weeh. 'cause I float like a butterfly, and I'm not being high. weeeh!

    Last Word
In which Juvenal finally notices that there is something going on in the Scriptorium

Please take the time to visit the Scriptorium Writing Competition. There were an impressive 36 entries this time, presented anonymously by the Scriptorium staff. They were organised into five simultaneous first-round competitions, the winners progressing to a final round shoot-out. There is much at stake, not just the delicate egos of writers yearning for the coveted Scriptorium Writing Competition Winner badge, but also a large bag-full of rep-points due to be awarded to the lucky winners.

The knock-out rounds have just concluded and the five winners have now been posted for the final round shoot-out here. Please go visit the forum, read the submissions and cast your vote. They are all winners of their respective sub-competitions, so the quality will be high.

Personally I was quite proud of my own story which, after an extended period of writer's block, finally came to fruition not long before the deadline for submissions. Sadly it failed to attract the admiration of the voters so you won't find it in the final, but oh well, c'est la vie. :(

If you liked Artist's Gallery this month, please don't forget to direct your rep towards my loyal crew: Saint Nicholas and Killerbee. Feel free to post your comments. Praise, (constructive) criticism or suggestions for changing our scope are all welcome.

Goodbye until next time, from Juvenal.
