    Icon5 Idea?....

Have you guys in the EB team ever thought of making an actual game and not a mod?, were you dont have to stick to the limitations of the games you mod.

Ino you would have to have money and that but you could get sponsors and maby you could collaberate with Creative Assembly or something.

    Just an idea.

it would be hard. editing files is different to making them from scratch.

Maybe when they release M2TW code like they did for Quake3?

Yes it would be hard. But they could do soo much more cool stuff if they made it from scratch like not having limits on what they can edit or add into it.

Eh..... seriously, no limits? Every company that develops games is limited by their publisher in content and developing time, there's a lot more to it than that. Not to mention that a real company has big sales as their primary objective so our favourite armor *cough* Lorica Segmentata *cough* would be forced into the game just for sales and the developers idealism would receive the lowest priority.

Not really, if people sponsor the development and the team already know how to or learn how to program the game then they could do anything they wanted to. They could easily make alot of money for the company distributing the games seen as though EB the mod has got thousands of downloads.

Mass production and distribution of the game would cost tons of money, it'd be great if there were enough people willing to invest in EB for this, but people are people and greed is our main drive and so it would come up short

Not to mention, like someone else said editing files is something different from building a game from scratch, they would probably have to buy expensive equipment and hire people who can do some necessary programming. I can go on for another whole hour, but that would take up another page. The bottom line is that, the EB team as it is now lacks the funds and manpower to create a whole new game. Not to mention that people want L33t Lorica Segmentata, so to make a profit or for your sake cover the losses, they would have to listen to the majority.

You don't need expensive equipment to do programming: a few good computers and a license to use a professional compiler is all you need. However, you are quite right in that writing programs is very different from modding them. It's not as simple as taking an existing engine and adding some bits to it: even if CA allowed the team to use their engine, it would require substantial rewrites to make the game into a proper simulation. That could take months to years, depending on how ambitious the EB team is.

Yes, EB was has had tens of thousands of downloads, which is about enough for a commercial product. But ask yourself: how many of these would have downloaded it if they had to pay?

That would be the biggest problem.
    I wouldn't have bought it.
Maybe I would buy it now that I know and love EB, but I wouldn't have bought it back then when I downloaded EB.

I doubt that anyone putting this much efford in a game that does not answer to the expectations of popular "history", could come even close to making enough money to cover his costs: let alone making profits...

Well yeah, but on the other hand, the EB members are probably
spread out over different countries. They'd either have to buy good machines for everyone or everybody would have to move to a collective development area, which would cost a lot of effort, time and money.

I am not sure if EB has the mass market appeal you attribute to it. Ten of thousands of downloads is great by the standards of a modification, but not for a video game. An EB game would also be too hardcore for the mainstream gamer, further limiting the appeal.

True. However, the team would need only a couple of programmers. The rest could continue to work on skins, research, balancing, etc.

I'd buy it. Gave me more fun than most commercial products out there. Been playing it longer than most games in my life and still am coming back to it.

It would be great if some millionaire who loved EB would help with financing but how many people like that do you know lol.

I think they can easily update the EBI website. But yeah the idea is impossible, even though I overflooded it with pessimism, there are still more than enough reasons why this could never work.
