Default idea for making game a little tougher.

Hello all, I've had Etw since it hit the shelves and read all the complaints and have a few myself. One thing that can easily be tweaked to make the game slower progress for those that feel the need to 'steam roll' is to make the conquered region revert back to the first level of advancement in the building tree.

I think that this will force people to change strategies.
For example - In The road to independence campaign (4) I tried to play historically on H/H level- I focussed on the natives and found my economy was very slow to take foot- this is because when you take the native american regions you cannot use their building tree, and have to start from the beginning which costs money.

I changed plans and declared war on Britain with about 15 turns left. I quickly took 3 regions and my income quadrupled. I could have done this from the start and completed the tasks in no time.

Also midway in the campaign, I was assaulted in the Georgia region and the The Cherokee's took it- When I took it back - I had lost all my production levels. (thats a high price to pay but do you see where it would change the campaign game in the European theatre? It would force people to not expand too quickly and keep units back for defense.)
This of course after they tweak naval invasions and the way the AI moves on offense.

I do this, and it definitely slows the game down. It also makes it more necessary to defend all your territories because if you lost it and take it back, you should tear down all the buildings again.

Perhaps someone will put this in a mod so it happens automatically. Or perhaps CA will tweak this on a patch someday.

This was a great feature in Imperial Glory.

If you took a province through dimplomacy nothing was destroyed, but it you took it through war, all the buildings were destroyed and you had to start building again from scratch.

And you could build "embassies" in other countries which would make them like you more.

Actually Empire and even MTW2 borrowed quite a few ideas from Imperial Glory.

steamrollers keep doing this in every tw game and then baw about the game being too easy. Its like fat people complaining about about Mcdonalds making them fat.

I think Europa Universalis had the best answer to steamrollers: make other nations also steamroller. In a good game, you could have 5 or so nations on an equal pegging, or even others outstripping you. This meant that, until you knocked them out (which was not easy) you would face competition through the whole game. It made everything tons better.

Iirc, IG didn't have naval battles. There was some arcade mode, where you had to click around frantically to make a dozen brown dots belonging to you not getting shot by another dozen brown dots . Most of the time you lost, especially if you were numerically superior. Plain logic.

Seconded. EU3 may be about text but it is one hell of a game that many other empire games could learn from.

I have EU 3 but I started playing it in conjunction with civ 4 and it's expansions.. EU3 looks really in depth and I just didn't have the time to learn the nuances'.

My opinion.. Naval landings in all continents would be great, besides that I think the AI works like it should -
