Default Bought it on disc, should I uninstall Steam?

    Easy question here...

I downloaded Steam when I DL'd the demo. Now that I bought the game on disc, it still loads Steam when I start it. My question to you all is 'do I still need Steam?' It appears to be quite the resource hog, and if I don't need it, I'd love to delete it.

If I do delete Steam, any concerns about save games, reinstalling, or anything else?

    thanks!

You need Steam - trust me when I say it's not nearly as resource intensive once it's up and running as people would claim.

You cant play without Steam running in offline or online mode.

You cant patch without Steam running in online mode.

If you're playing on a 486 I guess Steam is a resource hog. Any PC that is even remotely good enough to run the game, and isn't bogged down with rubbish, won't have a problem..

Yep, gotta have steam for it to run. I had to disconnect my internet in a separate room and connect my gaming computer just to install it, big hassle if you ask me to have to go and rearrange my house for an hour just to install a game I'm never going to play onilne... but anyway, it has to be on the computer to run the game.

A 'gaming PC' that doesn't have an internet connection is rather poorly named, if you ask me.

Theres a LOT of people who dont like playing against other real people. If you dont want to play against other real people you dont need an internet connection. I only have two games that require internet connection to play. They are both Steam games. Every other game I own I can play on a computer without internet connection by just putting the CD in the drive.

But you don't need the internet to play. You only need it to install/ uninstall. And you don't need the disk in the drive ever.

mods... how can you play total war games without mods? Otherwise I would agree that a gaming computer is fine without an internet connection, assuming you like solitude, but how can you play a game like this without mods?

I should have done both in one post... That's one of the things I like having two computers for too and having one on and one offline. I can play around with mods, download them on here and put them on my flashdrive and then take them in there, put them in, make sure they run, and then come back in here find what else is compatible with those and move them again as needed. That takes all of ten extra seconds as opposed to the five minutes to move the internet cables.

Plus if I find something wrong I can tweak and run searches to find what I'm doing wrong without losing my place in the lines of code on the other computer. It would be even easier if both computers were in one room... but I think we could all use the mandatory exercise this gives us

It's not about whether or not you're playing online. It's that a "gaming computer" should have even a dialup connection. You typing this online proves my point.

In this age of multi-hundred MB patches, a dialup is so painfully slow as to be almost next to useless, depending on your level of patience of course. After I moved, I had to relive that experience for a sometime until they rolled out DSL in my area a couple of years back, and let me tell you it wasn't pretty.

Anyway, I've known several (myself included in the past) who've had gaming rigs completely disconnected from the net to prevent viruses and other nasty bugs from infecting their, umm, priority systems. Completely possible if you have another rig or laptop to access the net, and use that to d/l patches. Of course this is only practical if you're able to devote a system solely to gaming and another one for general use, something that my current financial situation doesn't allow unfortunately.

You'd be amazed at how much more stable and responsive a system can be if there's nothing on it but an O.S. and your favorite games. No bloatware, applications, or drivers unrelated to gaming... sigh... those were the days...

Why? Just because I don't play games online doesn't make it a bad moniker for the computer. I don't really enjoy many multiplayer games on my computer, that's what my PS3 is for. I'd rather have the ability to do something awesome in game and run out here to this computer to tell everyone that doesn't care on the internet about it without going through the steps of minimizing the game too

is there any chance that CA will "emancipate" Empire from the shackles of Steam? and if your internet connection is down, can steam still run in offline mode hence running Empire.

Yes, Steam can run in offline mode and you can play all your games in offline mode.
