Unlock units

I'm new to this game and the total war series.
Atm when I host a MP battle or use the 'Play Battle' option and for example take Prussia, I can only choose from a very limited selection of units ( bout 4 inf, 2 cav and 4 art) but when I join a MP game hosted by som1 else I can choose from a lot more units.
Now how do I unlock those units? played trough grand campaign and road to independance but it didnt help.
Soz for this newb question =P

When hosting a MP battle you have the option to choose either the "early" or the "late period".
Selecting the "late" option here adds all the nations units and technology.

I always figured 'early and late' had somthing to do with time of the day r somthing... yea I'm feeling quite stupid now lol. Anyway thanks for the fast response
