How do I move everyone and preserve formation?

In other TW games I could arrange my troops where I wanted them and then hold down "alt" and click where I wanted them to go and they would march there and then assume the same position I had them in before the move.

I could also hold down "alt" and then click and drag to rotate the formation in place without losing the formation. That doesnt seem to work either.

Anyone know how to do it? What am I doing wrong? I cant imagine they would leave this out.

it used to do that for me by default, no holding keys. Doesn't do it in ETW though =/

you take all your troops and press the 'flag' button to make them a group

You are not doing anythig wrong, it simply does not appear to work the same way...

The only workaround is to get your units into position and then group them, then you can drag out grouped movement. However even this can be screwy when you try to alter the facing and it simply refuses to do that, simply moving your troops to the new location maintaining the original facing...

as others have said:

form one big group, get them into the formation you want, then move them. more than one group, or single units, will not work.

For me it's exactly the same as M2TW: Group, right click and drag.

But I only do this when paused to make sure it's going where I want it to.

Ive been selecting them all when I try to do it. When I do that and click and drag it just makes them into one big line and not in the order I arranged them. If I just select a line of multiple line infantry and click they advance properly, but a mixed formation of units isnt working for me.

When you say use the "flag" button do you mean like when you select units and assign them to a hotkey?

Strange responses. Some are saying it works, and some are saying it doesnt.

FYI, in M2TW you also had the ability to select all (or any) of the units you had carefully arranged and without grouping them simply hold Alt and click and drag (and rotate) to move the units while retaining their formation...

You tried selecting the entire group, holding the "alt" key down while clicking where you want the formation to go while holding its current formation of the units? The group will center on that spot, and everyone will retain their facing and spacing. I don't see why it didn't work for you, as I can get it to work. Strange.

You have to group them. It is a button with three flags.

When I want to move everyone in formation, I just click ctl-a (select all), and then hit the group button.

However, you want to form their group while they are not moving, otherwise it will put them in single line again.
