Although the 4870 has a faster core clock, ram clock, etc. The 4850 X2 is basically 2 slightly weaker GPUs in one. Cost-wise go for the 4870. Performance-wise go for the 4850 X2.

My personal preference would be the 4870 because its the most recent and cost-effective. PLUS GPU hardware depreciates quite rapidly and its not that smart to invest heavily on something that depreciates really fast.

Ok cool thanks for the advice. I wanted to get some advice before commiting to a sale. +rep for you Mandalore9 I was gonna go 4870 but then I saw the pair for not a bad price.

well after chatting with everyone on the boards for a couple of weeks now I think the 4870 is the way to go. it seems the Nvidia cards in the $250 price range don't stack up. would you agree.

    GTX 280
    4870

Compared to the GTX 280(which has clock of 665mhz), the 4870 is clearly better (750mhz). Not that much difference(85mhz) although the 4850($200) costs $144 less than the gtx280($344). I personally prefer ati as it has never let me down before. I am sure it will not let you down and you can hold me to my word.

I'll throw my two cents in here.

I've been playing E:TW with my 4870, and the thing runs absolutely like a charm. Granted, on max everything, it'll start lagging horribly whenever it rains, but I honestly think that's more of a bad optimization issue rather than the game itself, since everything else runs fine.

However, if you have the money, why not get a 4870x2? Double the power!

4870, i prefer single gpu to multi gpu stuck together on a single card.

    Why?

Basically they are crossfired on a single card, so you get the same issues sometimes that you would have with a sli/crossfire cards.

Single gpu are alot less of a headache and at your res 4850x2 would be over kill.

Cool, thanks Spaxspore. you and everyone here has been so helpfull in helping me get my PC right. I hope when I get the last few parts that I will be able to run with the Big boys. This is the best Gaming Rig I have ever had. I finally decided after many throw togather builds I would take the time to invest in a Solid System.

    +rep to you my friend

Be sure to post it all up once it's all assembled! I, for one, like to appreciate a good gaming rig.
