Default City glitch.. or just disapointing gameplay?

Im just wondering if anyone else has noticed that you never actually fight in the city. If you ever try to take an enemy AI's city you will fight outside the borders, usually in a town. However there is a backdrop of a great city in the background. Also, often I am the one who spawns in the town even though im attacking the city. This whole gameplay makes little sense to me.. So im not sure if this is a glitch im experiencing or whether the gameplay has been designed like this? If so, I am a little disapointed, because even with RTW you had the ability to defend or attack a large city, 8 years on, surely we have the technology to do this with ETW. I was really looking forward to being able to manoeuvre through the narrow streets of Paris during the revolution or New York in the civil war; it would have added another dimension of gameplay.

has been answered in quite a few threads. Most battles were fought in the outskirts of a large city and that is what you are fighting in. Many have argued (myself) that a lot of them were in cities as well but it seems as if CA has omitted them. You will ONLY be able to fight on the outskirts or forts if you have them.

If you are lucky you might see the city in the background. Let's hope it opens up for the expansion.

You really think that the game's pathfinding is up to the task of manuvering through the narrow streets of a huge city? o.O Are we playing the same game?

Not a bug; design decision. Rendering huge cities takes a lot of system resources.

I did a quick search but I couldn't find anything. I hope so

I take your point, but if CA really wanted to create a ground-breaking game then this feature shouldn't have been omitted. It's not like battles were not faught in cities.. And this was highlighted particularly stupidly when a revolution occurs.. Even if they implemented it purely for this scenario it would have been an interesting add-on. Like I said in my original post, huge cities were created in RTW, I think 8 years later we should have the capacity to move forwards not back.

This is too bad, it seems like a step back. In RTW and MTW2 the AI seemed able to handle the streets and roads fairly well.

Fighting in haphazard cities like in ETW is really iffy and I can see why they didn't make us fight in them.

I just love when your enemy spawns in between you and the larger city. That just makes me laugh. They really made some interesting choices with sieges.

This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.

I thought I read that if you attack a city with walls you go into siege mode... I haven't gotten one but I am pretty sure the manual said so..Or is that something else they forgot to mention they removed from the game?

but cities don't have walls, they get forts surrounding the city and you just fight in one of those forts

Then why the hell am I building walls on my cities? My cities have defensive fortifications I can build... I am not new to ETW and I know that I am correct that cities do have walls..

yes and the description even says it's a line of forts around your city, when fighting the battle you will be fighting in a fort, try it

Ah that makes sense, I thought you meant that you have to make a fort with your general to do sieges.

I always hated the siege battles in RTW and MTW2, so I'm glad their gone.

But the fort battles are pretty lousy right now. The terrain the fort battles are fought in seems to be pretty boring. They should have checked out the topography of Fort Ticonderoga and it's environs.

The British lost 2000 men taking Fort Ti.

the battle actually flips you and the enemy, if you are attacking you actually start in the town! if you are defending the AI start in the town! this is ed up. if you don't believe check the north east south west position on the battle map as well as where the reinforcement are coming from.

the reason why the reinforcement seem to come in your arse is because of this position swap!

    What game is that?

Yeah even the poorly rendered cossacks two had nice building scenes where you could battle it out from house to house.

Dear Flying Spaghetti Monster in heaven.

Do NOT even think about complaining about a lack of city battles. Just imagine the current pathfinding, the current building combat mechanics and the current artillery issues, with a full stack army in a city. THINK about it.

    The horror.
