    Default About State Gifts

    Hey guys,

just a quick question: about the state gifts (not sure they're called this way, i hope you know what i mean anyway)

So, when i'm trying to achieve some diplomatic victories over my enemy or ally, i found that the state gifts can be a useful thing to boost for a while their opinion toward my nation. Now, there are three kind of gifts (fine china, 2,5k ; stallion 5k ; jewels 10k), but chosing any of them just give the same bonus: +100.

Do you know anything about? is this a bug (but i guess it's best to say reckless programming) or i'm just missing something?

As it is now, does the state gift effect deteriorate over time?

Wow, so it only takes 50 years to wear off!

It's practically a cheat at this point -- you can get any nation to love you for almost no investment...

Love you is putting it wrong. Its a max of +100, if you expand a little and generally just play the game a few turns, they'll hate you way more than a +100 could fix

    make sense obviously...

thing is, i guess it would had made much more sense to give different bonuses to the gifts, like +50 the cheapest, +100 the most expensive gift.
It seems quite useless to pay 10k for the same amount of bonus in relationship with another nation that a 2,5k gift gives ...

not really, most nations your at war with would have well over -300, in which case a gift will do nothing, but it is useful for trying to develop other diplomatic agreements with neutral nations or perhaps make a unfriendly faction not want to attack you

Is there a limit to how much you can improve relations witha State Gift?

+100 is the max. I don't that thats a bug either, as you could span 1,000s of relation points through gifts.

I never checked this, but I assume the larger the gift then the longer the +100 takes to drop back down to 0.

no, it means even with that state gift, the negatives still outwiegh the positives by a large margin.

in the diplomacy tab, click on your nation, then hover the mouse over any other nation on the diplomacy map. After a few seconds some stats should pop up, this basically shows you why their attitude is what it is. When you start conquering stuff, people really start hating you and even the state gift wont bring your points out of hostile range.

Check the diplomacy tab. You probably still have too many negatives like expansion and historical grievances.

Considering how much 10k gets you in Total War Economy (3/4 full stack of line infantry, or 2-3 hefty building upgrades), a +100 bonus isn't a problem at all.... once they fix the bugs with smaller gifts.

....That is, if they fix the bug with the territorial expansion penalties at the same time.

If ur an expansionist nation then it's not a bug. The more land u take, more nations will hate u and have a -score on ur relations. So at the start of the game u gift them and the relation is 100 (for basic example) at the end of the game after taking a lot of territory they might have an attitude of -150 over that. So gifting them 100 still leave -50. This is actually very good as this means the stronger u get the more the AI should (this is bugger right now with the passive AI methinks) want to declare war on ur ass and destroy u b4 u become to powerfull to take.

Also in history I dont think any independant nation likes having their neighbour become a super power. As with Germany as they grew bigger they took more smaller nations, and Stalin was also allready planning an attack when Nazi Germany shared a border with them. It was just Hitler who struck first.

state gifts are way too easy

You can bribe every single country that threathens you with 10.000, so noone will attack you anymore and they want to be your allies. State gifts should cost 10 times as much.

Agreed. If you want to secure a flank, you just gift a historical enemy and boom, they're friendly to you. The Ottomans can make the Austrians love them in one turn, the Swedes can have Russia eating out of their hand.

    It's ridiculous.

Well the game is about reshaping history, so I don't see why we shouldn't be able to befriend historical enemies. There's already the historical grievance penalty, and AFAIK if you have a land the AI wants it'll still declare on you even if you spam state gifts at it.
