CPU Usage

Greetings,

So, I was battling it out with the French last night in Acadia (RTI). The were nice sized armies on the field, and everything was going, well let's say o.k., oh except for the crazy smudged river banks and I don't what to call the water. Then, it started to rain. I almost threw the freakin' disk out of my window the lag was so unbearable. I mean I use to play MIITW on my old, low end computer and didn't experience this much lag. Anyhow, I switched over to see what the CPU was doing and this is what it read:



That was taken with the game running and a star fort battle with rain.

Sorry if I am not too well-versed in this, but what exactly does that read? Is the CPU causing the lag? I know there are some issues with GPU's and the water/riverbank problem, so I was just wondering about the CPU. Oh, CPU is an Intel i7. Thank you in advance to any and all that help understand this a bit better. I would surely appreciate it.

It's just that CA has not optimized the game to fully use your multi core cpu, so instead of sharing the load over 4 cores all the work is done on 1 core while the other 3 pretty much idle.

That is outstanding . Could this be the cause of all of the campaign and battle lag? I am pretty sure that my rig can handle the higher settings. What does the percentage mean? I kind of figure that is the percent of the CPU that is being used.

From the screen shot i know you have 3gbs of ram, and proably a quad/i7

Thanks for the response. I have an ATI HD 4870 16X GDDR5 1GB ,yes you've got the rest correct.

Why does his performance tab show 8 cores instead of 4? If he has a Quad. Unless hes on some Octocore Mac.

try turning off the catylist AI in the catylist control panel, can cause lots of random lags for games.

I've tried that. I actully had to turn it on for Battlefield 2, but I originally had it off and still had the same results. On or off, it lags. Very frustrating. Thanks for helping out. Hopefully, some kind of graphical miracle will appear over the next few weeks.

The percentage means that the game is only untilizing 1/8 of your total CPU power ie. just one core. Your performance depends on how fast each core runs, you GPU and your RAM. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the response, that does help. That kind of sucks. Well, now I now why the trailer said that Empire "runs great on i7...". I don't, I suppose I'll play on lower settings or start playing MIITW SS again.

I'll give it a go. I am running XP 32 SP2. I guess I won't be playing in the highest settings. It just stinks that I thought I would have the rig to do it...arghhhh! Thank you for the help, I see how your configuration works when I get home.

That's all right, I may try that now that I have a better system to play it on. Man, if MIITW doesn't work on my rig, I definitely know there's something wr...nevermind, I don't even want to think about it.

Well it might not be hardware if you turn out to have problems with MTW 2.

It could be OS related, i was running xp 64 with my i7, had all kinds of troubles. Went to vista 64 w/ sp1 havnt looked back.

Seems to like the i7 and the x58 chipset better.

Either way, good luck.


P.s My bro has the same video card, the game runs great on his q9300 w/ 4gig ddr3, x48 Asrock. Vista 64.


Also its COMPLETELY normal with a i7 to play games and not have it use any cpu.

Case and point, i played GTA 4 with my e8500 core duo 2. Game would use 90-99% cpu all the time.

Upgraded to i7... max it used was 31% and that is the most cpu demanding game i own.

That processor is that revolutionary.. its epic.

I also noticed then when I upgraded from my old AMD 64 5000+ Duo

to my Current one the... AMD Quad Core 920

when running games like EQ2 and IL2 I went from 70-100% usage to now like 10%

Well, perhaps I'll have to swith to vista 64 w/ SP1. I am willing to try anything. If you don't mind me asking, how is Empire for all of you? Do you have good FPS, no lag and the sorts. You know, I really don't care about the FPS, if I really think about it. I just want it to run well. Thanks.

How much of a performance increase do people think we can expect when CA finally releases the patch that will optimize for multi-core? I'm trying to decide if its worth upgrading my CPU or just waiting for the patch to see if it makes that big of a difference.

Game runs fine on medium unit settings and I only have a C2D (2.0ghz) e4400. If people with i7's are reporting bad FPS I'm not sure upgrading my CPU will do much for me.

Comparing a dual to a quad in GTA IV .. rofl!
Also, what resolution? The higher the less CPU dependant, lower more cpu. The I7 is skyrocketing in cpu-usage in crysis on low resses (higher than other c2q)

Also why does it show 8 when its 4 on it?
