Default My E:TW has had Zero Tech Problems Until Yesterday (please help me)

I've had E:TW for about 3 weeks now. Up until yesterday, I've had absolutely zero technical problems.

Yesterday, I use a hex editor for the first time; I was trying to set the campaign to 3 turns a year (2 summer and 1 winter). I followed instructions and the editing seemed to be a pretty simple step-by-step process.

When I was done with this tex editing, I went to launch E:TW. For the first time (just before the "Sega" screen usually appears), I got a pop-up box telling me that E:TW had quit working. I re-tried again and again: same result.

So I came to the conclusion that, even though my hex editing atempt seemed to go according to plan, that the reason E:TW would crash just prior to launch was clearly a result of my hex editing because it had never happened before and it happened right after. Simple enough.

I decided to simply uninstall E:TW and then do a fresh install. I did so and to my surprise the same problem occured. This is really confusing to me because whatever I did during my hex editing should be gone because I uninstalled; and the fresh install should work just the way it has over these past 3 weeks.

What could possibly make the game launch and run flawlessly since the day I got it, but then now not be able to complete launch with a fresh vanilla install? What should I do? Thanks in advance

When you uninstalled the game did you remove all files (including hidden) from your system? It may be a silly thing to ask but you never know with these systems. Also with Vista files could be placed in the 'Virtual Store' if your game was installed to the "c:\program files (x86)" folder.

Thanks for your reply. This seems likely, since the fresh install was somehow different than it was originally. What's the easiest way to check for this? And by the way, I am using Vista.

Thanks again for your help. I'm really eager to get back to playing again.

Brusilov has the right idea: I experienced this same issue with other games; it is not quite a 'VirtualStore' issue with E: TW, however.

go to the 'Start' menu and type 'appdata' (or AppData, or whatever you prefer)--you will end up with 3 folders displayed: Local, LocalLow, and Roaming. Open Roaming (VirtualStore is found in the Local folder) and you will find a 'The Creative Assembly' folder (this is also where your saved games are stored, BTW, so you may want to back them up before anything else); I'm guessing that you will need to delete this in order to get a truly fresh install (as well as the directory found in your 'Steam' folder in Program Files).

    Good luck.

Everything's fine now; the problem was my "scripts". They must be deleted seperately if they are causing problems (they remain after you uninstall E:TW).
