Default CryEngine 3 Tech Demo Released

...So freaken disappointed. Looks significantly worse than Crysis at CCC 3... They should have named it CryEngine 1.5. Console gamings once again degrading PC Gaming... we just lost CryTek... What other developers are left? Damn pirates.

While crytek did hint at turning their back on pc gaming after crysis' initial flop, crysis picked up in pc sales and ended up doing rather well.

Also, according to the video's poster, the demo is from console version of the engine. I'm sure it'll look better on the PC, even if not as good as it would if it were a PC exclusive.

Its also a youtube video, that can reduce quality.

Meh, a HD Youtube video on fullscreen gives a pretty detailed picture.

The bad: Some of the rock and mountain textures aren't too good. Many textures, actually, appear too pixelated.
The good: That leaf-rippling effect for trees, from explosions, is spot-on. The waterfall looks incredible. Lighting and dynamic shadows (like the dusty beams of light peeping through the forest canopy) are amazing too.

Don't forget this is the console version.

The bullet and grenade impact's are the best I'v ever seen.
Really, this is just an optymized criengine2, and thats good. I dont think any one could see the full potentiall of CE2 because of its poor optimisation.

Looks good, but the video quality is quite bad, and I'd rather see it on a PC. Any idea what kind of game that is?

My jaw dropped, but not quite as far as it did for the last one. i.e. it's good but not such a big improvement.

Eh ignore the textures, the point is the engines capabilties. The textures had way too much bump on them, that or the lighting system sucks, that or it is a console version of the cry engine... who knows? I don't know why they made cryengine 3 tho, cryengine 2 was way ahead of the curb when ti came out it could have lasted a couple years.

For those of you who say it looks crap: Wre we looking at the same video?
    (Hit HD for better quality)

Actually my main concern is: Have you even played Crysis or Crysis Warhead? If you had you would see that the Cry Engine 3 has some pretty astounding improvements in comparison to the Cry Engine 2. Lighting, gemoetric effects, physics, texture visualization are just some of the things that are quite a bit better in this new engine. Also this is a demo and expect to see BETTER visuals when implemeemted in a game. Have you seen the Cry Engine 2 demo?

If you compare it to Crysis or Crysis Warhead which use the engin, it look much better in game than the demo. This new engine looks incredible. It's significantly closer to reality than the visuals produced by the previous engine. Crytek also stated that thanks to their experiences with Cry Engine 2 and the Crysis games this new engine will be better optimized so that current generation consoles and PCs will be able to play games that use the engine with all the amazing visuals but not the performance loss. I think PC gamers will gain more from the multiplatform nature of the new engine than lose in terms of exclusivity. Crytek has stated that they will continue to support the PC as their primary platform and actually increase their investment in the platform in the coming years. It seems they are trying to broaden their audience as well as take all the lessons learned from Crysis and apply it to future games, including Crysis 2.

I play Crysis, and I think it looks significantly better than this, and hell, I'm using a mid level custom configuration.

EDIT: Here is a video of CryEngine 2 at it's best.
    Watch in HD.

Pretty garbage compared to PC version.

It looks decent but CryEngine 3 is never going to reach its full potential on a console. Especially the PS3 version looked pretty crap. I'll suspend my judgement until a PC techdemo. I'm sure it'll blow everyone away when we see the PC version. That, and a proper video. Not a youtube version.

Might just end up getting a second 8800 GT and running an SLi configuration for it, because I doubt I'm going to get much out of it with just one GPU.

^^^ Just get a new card from either ATI's or Nvidia's newest series if you want to pwn crysis, plus it will be like an upgrade for the future. I only have a 4850 and I can max crysis.

Yeah well I bought this 8800 GT a year back and I'm planning to get some good mileage out of it yet. xD I think that my rig is pretty strong in general and with two of said GPU's in SLi I don't doubt that I would be able to achieve some funky visuals, even with CryEngine 3. I don't have the numbers here but I believe I read a benchmark chart a while back that pointed out that 2x 8800 GT still delivers a stronger performance than a single 9600 GTX or Ultra. And considering 8800 GT's won't cost a dime by the time CryEngine 3 releases with the next Crysis installment, I think it's a financially sound move to buy a second one.
