    Hey all,

I don't know about YOU all but......This era is strange.

I own RTW/BI/ATW & MTW2 & Kingdoms and I find that in ancient times, strategy & tactics WERE important but this muzzleloader/howitzer/naval combat with cannons is quite different business.

I'm finding that I must actually play a siege battle or Me vs. Them battle in order to more properly understand the mindframe of this era, which was rapidly evolving.

Anyway, it's not like phalanx's or legions. Hmmmmm....different indeed.

Hopefully the patches that CA/Sega are coming out with put some nuts into this game, AI overall wise.

    Toodles!

Yeah its quite different from previous games, but its really fun and rewarding once you get the hang of it.

Adjust your tactics as you move forward.

I'm loving the 18th century when it comes to Strategy & Tactics. I find myself using more often flank tactics and clever use of terrain than the usual Wall of Spears with Archers behind tactics of Rome.

The terrain is really important,i find myself having to strafe along the ground line because the battle fields are quite deceiving.I just wish you could "survey' the battlefield before the fight and position yourself where you wanted, not just with-in the red box's,as in a real battle.I do understand in some battles you don't have that choice & in that case you stuck where you are put, that's fine with me also.

As the engagement distance in warfare distanced, meaning that men could engage each other at longer and longer ranges, the importance of the units brought, initial formations became less and less important.

Instead more importance was put on, the maneuvering done once you met your enemy and the terrain you were able to hold during those movements.

There were of course still mass melee engagements, but the outcomes of those were usually predetermined by the initial volleys and final positions of each infantry men, Calvary, and artillery.

In this respect I think ETW has captured the essence of the era. There are of course issues, but much like every other total war release to date they will be resolved with time.

I was very dismayed the first time I did a battle in this game. I instantly had my behind haned to me on a platter.

However the more I played, the funner it got. Now I am happily mapping out my territory and drawing the proverbial line in the sand. Whistling a happy tune whilst bullets whiz about my head.

Silly you! Rome didn't have Phalanxes!

    Sorry couldn't resist.

Adjusting for me was strange as well. Of course, good ole' hammer and anvil is ALWAYS a viable strategy.

You're right... in Rome, charge cavalry and infantry for an instant win. In Medieval II, mass cavalry for an instant win. In Empire, don't move your army and get an instant win.

(...That's actually true to an extent)
