is fighting natives bugged?

Trying to take out the Huron's last base with a full stack of line infantry, dragoons and artillery. When I engage I don't have any of my dragoons on the map and the computer skips my deployment. As a result I have about 15 seconds before the Indian cavaly are all over me and my general dies and my army is routed. Is this working as intended?

Were you ambushed? Thats happened to me a number of times from a stack hiding near their city

Yeah, that's an ambush. The injuns snuck up on you. The Dragoons going invisible happens to me too when I get ambushed.

A way to avoid the ambush is to have a scout unit of militia foot, cheapest you can get, and have it move by itself ahead of your main body. You move the militia unit first, then move the rest of your force along the same path once the militia unit safely reaches the end of his march at each turn. That way, ambushes are most likely going to get sprung on your cheap militia and that's no real loss to have to absorbe.
