How do the deployed defenses work? I'm not talking about the "spikes" from ME2, I'm talking about the walls and cannon defenses. I've noticed sometimes you can deploy them, and sometimes you can't... I haven't paid enough attention to figure it out.

multiple threads on this but here goes:
Fort defenses are bugged at the moment, u can place ur armies on the walls and occasionaly they'll man the canons on there but usually they shoot when the enemy is allready touching the wall.
For deployable defenses u need to let ur army stand on the same position for 2 turns, ur general will have small stakes around him on the campaign map. When this happens u can deploy defenses such as stakes and artycover.
If u take a town (not city) and leave ur troops in there for 1 turn u can deploy them.

You don't have to have a general in your army to build field works, earth works, mines, cannon earth works, Just let your army stand in place for 2 turns, and then when the battle comes you just click on a unit and you shoudl see a bar above the nomral command bar...etc![]()
Oh thought u always see a general on the campaign map regardless of the army having one. Might be wrong as all my armies have generals lol.

Don't be passive when your troops are on the walls. Tell them to fire on the enemy, this makes them shoot nearly all the time I've seen. The bug is that it doesn't show their range and fire at will is borked, so just guess and pick a target. I start shooting immediately, and you'll know its working when the troops move to the cannons.
