    Default Infantry arrangement

In very early campaign battles before technologies have been researched I thought it would be a good idea to protect line infantry from cavalry by putting pikemen in front. However, when placing them in a pikewall formation in case of a charge the line infantry shot the pikemen. Is there not a way to utilise this arrangement so that the line infantry essentially shoot between the pikemen. Maybe a special ability or something or has this just not been incorperated into the game?

Not that I am aware of. I just sacrifice the pikemen, to be honest.

Pikemen were meant to be integrated into the battle line rather put in front of it. Pikes were to deter cavalry from charging musketeers, who would be near enough to pike formations to shelter within or behind them if cavalry came too near.
