Default Brig is sloop, sloop is brig?

I wonder (I'm no 18th Century naval expert, but I know a little), the brig you see in naval battles seems smaller and simpler than the sloop. Supposedly, the brig should be larger and more complex, so to speak. My concept of a sloop is that it is little more than a glorified longboat, and that is exactly how the brig looks like. May it be that the figures are exchanged?

They got it right. The sloop design their using is a bit on the bigger size as far as sloops go, but the number of guns is much less than the Brig. Additionally, the sloop's sail pattern is more of a Ketch style than a sloop, but the unit card description highlights this. The regular sloop rigging would be closer to the Xebec in terms of operation and used large versions of those little sails you see on the back of the aft masts of larger vessels.

A sloop-of-war would have been ship-rigged (square-rigged) with 3 masts whereas a brig always had 2. The name "Sloop" is rather deceptive as any ship, be it a 1st rate ship of the line or a "standard" sloop-of-war, that is commanded by a lieutenant and holding the rank of master and commander onboard that ship (called "captain" by courtesy while the lieutenant commanded the ship) would be called a sloop.

There is no real standard as to what a "sloop" is, it being a fairly catch all term for sailing ships below a certain size, however by the plate 18th century there was a pretty standard "sloop of war" designation, being a ship rigged sloop of some 12-18 guns. e.g.

Not necesarily... when we see a sloop on sea we don't call it a ""Sloop of war" nor does it has 12-18 cannons. It's more a reference to max size/way of being build etc. ...

What, when you are sailing about in the 18th century? =/

Hmm I really don't think my description was bad: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloop-of-war

It was excellent, I was just pointing out that modern day sloops don't use cannons anymore

It's a good thing this thread is obviously in reference to modern sailing vessels

Sloop; only usefull in early game

brig; very usefull ship (even later on) for capturing routers. They're pretty fast!

... ok I think eatme will accept your offer. You get 20 galleys and he gets 10 brigs. deal here?

but seriously, brigs are far from bad. Good routers catcher

sloops however are surpassed by brigs in my opinion

    Galley?

Anything less than a 5th Rate is a waste of dock yard space IMHO . Of course the 'crap' ships are useful against other 'crap' ships,,,like galleys

Sorry boys but a Sloop is, in the nautical world, a "one mast" rigged sailboat, while the brig has two,or three, and can have various type of rigging, square sails, also, a ketch is a two mast rigged sailboat,as the yawl,no square sails, but they differ in the mizzen mast position and dimensions, and so on..... ;-)
E fra chi lo ascoltò,alcuni erano buoni
    molti erano malvagi,
    e molti non erano niente,
come tutti gli uomini...in qualsiasi luogo....
