    Default Ferre's legion pack

Hey, I know that XGM uses Ferre's awesome legion pack, but I was wondering, why is the full variety of it not represented?

Of those, the Republican First Cohort, Imperial heavy cohort and Urban Cohort aren't in the mod at all.

Does anyone know where I can find these units so I can add them in for use in my campaign? Thanks.

There were no historical references for urban cohorts as uber-heavy praetorians. In fact XGM uses vigiles as town watch/city police which is more realistic. Also, there is no use in depicting some cohorts with heavier armor than others as we already have 3 lorica segmenta units.

We don't need more uber-heavy romans anyway. They are already insane.

I don't play with the Romans, but I don't think XGM distinguishes between the Republican Legionary Cohorts and the Imperial ones either, it just labels them Legionary Cohorts and First Legionary Cohort. Splitting them up wouldn't really do much anyhow. To answer your other question, Urban Cohorts are in the game, but as a better garrison troops trained in Rome, so their fairly useless. The Roman roster could use some spicing up, I suppose, but iin areas that aren't just making the legionary's more uber-heavy. Putting in some Antesegni, for example, would be a good addition.

Dividing between republic and imperial legionares would be utterly pointless.

Awesome avatar Darth. So classic .

Still, I'm aware of various historical inaccuracies.

None of them as glaring as the fact that in XGM there are several lorica segmentata armor wearing units, when the campaign takes place mostly from 200 BC to 100 BC and the first lorica segmentata stuff would have been at least 50 AD, if not a century or two after.

But lorica segmentata looks so cool that it's in anyway. Which is awesome.

Do any of you know where I can find ferre's most recent modding pack with all of these files? I googled it but couldn't get a good result.

And hell, as I already said somewhere else, using Vigiles as garrison units isn't realistic at all. The Vigiles were the fire brigade of Rome AFTER the beginning of the Empire. They weren't some cheap levy units garrisoning every Roman town and city. And as for the Urban Cohorts, they were the police/riot control unit, and noone knows what kind of armor they would have worn in the later empire.

Maybe an attempt at having Lorica Segmentata and Lorica Hamata in the same mod? Still kind of pointless.

Strictly speaking, using any units as a garrison is unrealistic except in newly conquered provinces.

But the game doesn't provide for not having a garrison (of recruited troops), so what are we to do?

    That's my point

The game is inherently unrealistic in some aspects, and trying to make it ultra realistic will just result in making it LESS realistic in some ways.

Rome had a million people in the Late Republic and not a single soldier or police force garrisoning it, not even a bodyguard for senators. But there of course wasn't rioting or revolting, because they were Romans.

I think XGM approximates this much better than the vanilla game, though. In my Roman campaign, Rome itself is happy with only a governor in it.

    Thanks Vercetonix

Vigiles are as good as any unit, the actual vigiles might not exist in our frame, but "vigil" means "guard" (or so I've read), so it's a fitting name.

I believe it's where the word "vigilant" comes from. The name is indeed fitting.

And the Roman system really didn't have any kind of garrison troops to begin with. Like caesarvincens said, only rebellious or recently conquered cities had any garrison at all, and that garrison was made up of the same legionaries and auxiliaries that were front line troops for the Romans.

So, in the end, when you factor in RTW's limitations (aka the need for garrisons), Vigiles should stay.

Yeah, I never said they shouldn't stay.

This thread was actually about asking people where I can get the latest versions of Ferre's legion pack, but nobody actually answered the question, everyone just said "why would you want to do that, its not realistic, etc etc", so I had to point out that the game in general isn't any more realistic, so it shouldn't matter.

Might as well ask it again

Dude? In one thread you are trying to get uber powered unrealistic legionares while in another you're trying to argue against uber powered unrealistic barbarians.

    Typical Roman...

Anyway, if you check the modding workshop, Ferres has a thread in the models/skins forum.
