    Default No visible sail damage?

I'm still monkeying around with my video settings because I cannot get rid of the horrid, jaggy white dots that appear on musket barrels. Anyway, I've found that if I have every in-game setting at maximum possible, I cannot see any damage to enemy sails.

    Is this a common occurrence?

I can see it, so it exists. That's all I can say on the matter

Yes, I've seen visible sail damage when I use lower graphics settings, but not on maximum. I was wondering if this was something specific to my setup or if it was a common issue.

I had to switch off those volumetric effects (fog)

I currently have shaders at 3.0 high, all settings at "ultra", AA at 8X, AF at 16x, and all options enabled. I've been getting some annoying jaggies on weapons (see my other thread in this sub-forum) and I've been fiddling around to find the best settings for my system.

Yep, I noticed tears in sails when I had my settings accidentally set lower than ultra. Cranked it up the next battle and they weren't there anymore.

yeah, so volumetric effects (fog) are the problem then.. just turn them off like prof said, for naval battles. Works for me!

does that also fix the blurred images of flags and such as well? i'd assume so since VE is responsible for the blurred of distant units.

That's depth of field, it simulates the blurring of things away from the focal point of a camera lens. It is independent from VE.

Ah, good tip. Is volumetric fog that noticable? Worth the trade?

I can confirm that volumetric effects affect damage appearance to sails.

What I want to know though is whether or not it affects in game statistical damage?

sails were always taking damage with or without VE. I tested this last night simply by starting a battle with VE on and playing for a bit, getting a few shots on rigging. Then hit the options and shut VE off. Immediatly after re-loading even before resuming the gameplay you could immediatly see sail damage on ships i had hit before... even on the sails that had physically hit and had shown nothing with VE on. The game always recognized it, just didn't show it.

As for VE, the blur i was speaking of is completely gone with it off. Depth of field is still on.

The only problem I have with the whole thing is the SSAO shadows will not go on without VE enabled. Kind of a drag, really liked those shadows.
