This is how I resolved the game-killing CTD (late game) which so many have experienced.
Game went swimmingly, playing as Marathas, until 1778. At this point I was engaged in combat in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the middle east/Asia: After conducting a multitude of operations, I experienced the dread 'end turn' CTD.
Without boring you all with the details--this is what I did:
1. performed memory-leak work-around
2. rolled nvidia drivers back to 181.22
3. cleared all save games except the most recent (1778), which I then
renamed 'test'
4. methodically reworked operations in each theater (India, Europe etc.),
saving, ending turn, and reloading after every 3-5 operations.
5. ultimately determined that the game-killing event was when I crossed
the Hellespont and took Istanbul.
By leaving a 20-stack on 'my' side of the Hellespont I am able to engage militarily anywhere and everywhere I wish without any CTDs, as of yet; note that although I cannot remember exactly what game-year I ended at last night, I am sure that it was at least 1785 (with all world-domination victory conditions met, mind you).
Ultimately, I am fairly confident that my CTD was solved by not annexing the region of Istanbul, rather than the memory work-around or driver roll-back, though one never knows. My hope is that this experience may help others with the end-turn CTD, as it is most aggravating. I experienced this same issue with various large mods for M2TW (Dulce lo Vult, the Long Road, etc) and was fully prepared to carve my brain out of my head rather than deal with such heartache again.
