    Default CTD AAR

This is how I resolved the game-killing CTD (late game) which so many have experienced.

Game went swimmingly, playing as Marathas, until 1778. At this point I was engaged in combat in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the middle east/Asia: After conducting a multitude of operations, I experienced the dread 'end turn' CTD.

Without boring you all with the details--this is what I did:

    1. performed memory-leak work-around
    2. rolled nvidia drivers back to 181.22
    3. cleared all save games except the most recent (1778), which I then
    renamed 'test'
    4. methodically reworked operations in each theater (India, Europe etc.),
saving, ending turn, and reloading after every 3-5 operations.
    5. ultimately determined that the game-killing event was when I crossed
    the Hellespont and took Istanbul.

By leaving a 20-stack on 'my' side of the Hellespont I am able to engage militarily anywhere and everywhere I wish without any CTDs, as of yet; note that although I cannot remember exactly what game-year I ended at last night, I am sure that it was at least 1785 (with all world-domination victory conditions met, mind you).

Ultimately, I am fairly confident that my CTD was solved by not annexing the region of Istanbul, rather than the memory work-around or driver roll-back, though one never knows. My hope is that this experience may help others with the end-turn CTD, as it is most aggravating. I experienced this same issue with various large mods for M2TW (Dulce lo Vult, the Long Road, etc) and was fully prepared to carve my brain out of my head rather than deal with such heartache again.

I have back - ups of all my saves for my entire campaign; I merely cleared them from my directory so as to make it easier.

anyway, maybe no one else is having this issue anymore, or maybe my info amounts to a repost.

...also, as I said in the original post--I have met the victory conditions, and there is no way that any nation left will be able to defeat me before 1799.

My game corrupting moment as GB occured when I took either Cherokee Territory or Kiatuck Territory (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=232742). Unfortunately, I made a bad call and decided to take Cherokee Territory, thinking that only the Cherokees were corrupted, and deciding that I would just leave the Kiatuck alone for the rest of the game. I mean, I did need Cherokee Territory to complete my mission to gain the 13 Colonies, after all.

But it was several turns later that I declared war on France only to realize that my "game corrupting moment" affected them as well. I guess I could try to avoid war with France as well, but what other bugs are out there for me to run into next? My GB campaign is officially dead until CA fixes this issue (hopefully they're on top of it).

I doubt it is as simple as "taking Instabul" or "taking Madrid". I have had it happen now twice with Prussia in the 1765 to 1772 range and it happens when Persia's turn comes up. Both times I have gotten past it by loading my saved games going backwards and just ending each turn quickly to see which one will get me past the ctd turn. When I've figured out how far I have to go back, (ususally 2-3 turns) I then do exactly what I had done before and I end up fine. I think it is still related to save game corruption and not what you actually do within the game.

In my case, this appears not to be what's going on. As I mentioned, I too was able to pinpoint the exact moment that my game went buggy. I reloaded from an earlier save, and was able to recreate the issue successfully. There was apparently nothing quirky about my game until I captured Cherokee territory or Kiatuck Territory. Prior to this, I could declare war on France and request peace from the Cherokees without issue, and successully take one of those 2 settlements. But after taking one of the settlements, like clockwork, a bunch of things broke.

So in my case, there does seem to be a clear link between what I do in the game, and my CTD issues.

marceror: our CTD experience(s) seem to tally well. Yours is interesting to me as my final conquest in RTI was Kiatuck: For me, this sucked because, although my success brought victory to the campaign, after the cinematic and missive concerning ultimate victory conditions (maintain until whatever year they said) I was unable to save my game--it would always go back to immediately prior to taking Kiatuck. I eventually gave up.

cspimp: your conclusions make sense to me. On the one hand, it is not that I was asserting that taking Istanbul itself caused my CTDs, so much as it seemed that the action allowed conditions conducive to corruption. However, in light of your experiences, I think that I will go back and take Istanbul (it is several game - years later, now) and see what happens. Also, I wonder if there is something about the files related to Persia (or the territories occupied thereof).

My advice, bring a big enough army so you can win easily via autoresolve!
