thank you so much.

Why are people so afraid to say what they have? In all of these topics no one mentions their specs, just vague details.
Anyways, a 4850 is maybe the best option, you can get it for around 140-160, great card for today's games. Of course this game demands a lot of RAM as well, so that may be a problem.
radeon sucks, my 1 1/2 year old 8800 GT can play Empire on Ultra, and its cheap so buy an 8800 or a 9800
My ATI Radeon HD 3800 series with 512mb Onboard actually plays Empire rather well with everything maxed out to ultra, the only time i've experienced slow-down was one time when i was sieging a fort, and i had the camera on the wall, looking down into the French troops, but the slowness only lasted a few seconds.
Mind you, I DO have an intel Q660 quad-core supporting it, so that helps performance.![]()
My named ships in Empire Total War: (that i can remember)

Fifth Rate, HMS Dauntless.
Fifth Rate, HMS Enterprise NCC-1701
Fifth Rate, HMS Simi.

and are these available at best buy, fred meyers, etc?
Depends. Are you on a budget?

2gb ram
im not sure about the graphics card all i know is that its bottom of the range and almost certainly 5 yrs old lol

my nvidia 9600gt is running the game just swell on 1920*1200 on high settings except shadows and sky ( ultra units) on an old p4 3.4 ghrz cpu
I have an Nvidia 9500 1 gig card. My CPU is an AMD Phenom 2.2 Quad core. That is a little underpowered for the game, since I don't think all 4 cores are used. The GPU is great, it isn't top of the line, but it handles ETW well and it makes up for my limited RAM (2 gigs on vista). I have not many problems with the game, except that the turns take a while (2 minutes) after about 1730, and I have seen the occasional graphic glitch on full stack battles. I have played full stack land battles on ultra size without a problem, and 1/2 stack naval battles as well. I built this computer last year expecting to play this game on it, so I am not disappointed. My whole computer, which is intended for 3 years of gaming, cost around $750.00 US
A quick google of the 9500 GT 1 gig shows it for sale on NEW EGG for $79.99 - its a solid medium/low end graphics card, and i am able to play ETW, Spore, Age of Empires 3 and other recent games with it. Of course if you want to spend some $$ there is the 9800 as well...

Tom's Hardware guide: Best Graphics card for the money.
If you have a budget of ~$100, I'd say check out the Ati 4830. In that price range, it beats the 9600GT. It's not as good as a 9800GT but it's cheaper. I wouldn't recommend a 9500, that's more of a low-end thing. Typically, for budget gaming with Nvidia you want to look at their x600 GT stuff.
But, after doing some research, 4830 seems to come out top as a sub $100 budget gaming card and that's the card I bought. Last I saw, 4830 was going for $75 on Newegg after rebates and with free shipping.
I was having some trouble with it at first, but after installing the new drivers and disabling Catalyst AI, everything seems to be running quite stable now. It can handle Ultra though I usually have it on High(except shadows on Ultra) cause I don't really see that much of a benefit of Ultra over High for the performance hit.
Moved to tech help. PM me with any questions.
The best all around not super expensive graphics card is Nvidia 8800gtx. (stay away from the 8800gt)
Holy Hannah! It actually caused my processor and video card to overheat, and it has smoked my main machine! Never had that happen. Heard the processor fan speed up, and I mean speed up, then the video card fan, then overheat errors. Whoa, anyone have any ideas on this? Checked my task manager, and the proc was running 100% on both cores for a while. Is this normal? AMD 4800+ processor, Nvidia 7800 GT video card w/ 2 gb of 3200 ram. All case fans running, nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing else running than the game. I've never had a heat related shutdown on this machine, its my main photoshop workhorse.
gtx 260
..at least that's what I'm running it on
