I would play Vanilla but I often only play when friends come over and my favourite campaign (I have kingdoms) is Grand. Unfortuantly Hotseat was introduced in kingdoms and Grand was left out. So in conclusion I actually NEED Retrofit (Or at least thats what I tell myself).![]()
Mods... the Vanilla map is to small, and there are to few factions and units... In fact we are entering a golden era of modding MTW2 and I think that the mods will get even better. I modded Vanilla within minutes of installing the game so that I could play an unplayable faction as I recall, so I might have never played a true vanilla version of this game...
To be honest.. vanilla in M2TW is almost unplayable... it's just not a good game.. but with SS? or Deus Lo vult? The game rocks...
I actually prefer vanilla RTW (even with the alame chariots, julii, brutii, etc) to M2TW vanilla
I pretty much buy TW games for the mods... RTW, M2TW and now ETW
Vanilla.
I don't like mods for this game; most of them just add too many new things. I want a mod that conservatively tweaks the game, improves it, without a lot of other stuff just to show off.
If you want to access more land area, or play a totally new scenario that's cool, but all I want is a few tweaks here and there. And Ireland as a playable faction.
I can't really find that without a whole host of other completely unnecessary add-ons.
I tried several mods -- they are mostly ok. I do not like the mix of the big maps and fog of war on the steppes though.
To a degree, one could say that Kingdoms is really a collection of fine mods for a vanilla M2TW.
I play a pretty vanilla mod -- the Retrofit Mod by Unspoken Knight. I am also play around with another oldie by Lusted: Lands to Conquer. I like to play a chivalrous slower paced game rahter than the nlitzing action style.
That is not to say a certain Beta version of Rome in M2TW clothes is not interesting.
