Default What's it with the "United" Kingdom

I don't know my English history all that well, but weren't Scotland, (northern) Ireland, and Wales conquered by the English?
And if so, why do you Scots/Welsh/Irishmen put up with the English rule? I'd have started a resistance years ago. I know for example Scotland has something of an own government now, but they're not completely independent, are they?

I know I should not use this sentence, because someone will probably use it in a quote, making me look stupid, but: Or am I completely wrong, and do I need an explaination of the British Isles' History?

I believe Scotland was pretty much inherited by the English, Ireland is free (except for NI, which wants to stay with the UK) and Wales was finished in the 13th or 14th century I believe - who'd be stupid enough to keep fighting for 700/600/500-something years now?

The Scots proposed a UNION between the Kingdom of England (yes, Wales was conquered by the English at this time) and the Kingdom of Scotland so there you have the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

In 1801, some British puppet Irish figureheads proposed a union between the Kingdom of Ireland and Great Britain, creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

The Irish revolted because we didn't want to be in the union, some British pawns put us in there and we were discriminated, so we rebelled and got most of our independence.

The Scots didn't revolt since they fairly proposed the union and weren't discriminated and were treated equally.

I believe it was set in motion when James VI of Scotland inherited the English crown (and became James I, as well as technically 'uniting' Scotland & England since he was now King in both countries), then Cromwell smashed them near the end of the War of the Three Kingdoms...I think the whole thing was wrapped up with the Act of Union, 1707.

Wales is technically not a Kingdom in the United Kingdom. It's royal line was wiped out and it became a principality; it's not on the royal coat of arms. According to the monarchy, 'Wales' is England.

We're a united nation, united through hate. The Welsh hate the English. The Scottish hate the English. The Irish hate the English. And the English hate the rest of the English. It's surprising we function at all.

    True.
According to the Theory of War, which teaches that the best way to avoid the inconvenience of war is to pursue it away from your own country, it is more sensible for us to fight our notorious enemy in his own realm, with the joint power of our allies, than it is to wait for him at our own doors.

Elizabeth I died childless, and the English throne was inherited by her Cousin, James I. James I was also James VI of Scotland. At this point, the King of England was also head of state of Ireland as well, a position England had held since Henry II (albeit nominally on occasion).

James I believed in unifying the two kingdoms he ruled but it took his dynasty to achieve it. The Union of Crowns lasted about 100 years, until Anne came to the throne and it was under Anne that Scotland and England merged to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

In Ireland, the English monarch had been Lord of Ireland since Henry II. Under Henry VIII some 400 years later, the Irish parliament named Henry both King of Ireland and head of the church of Ireland. As the new Queen of Great Britain, Anne was also Queen of Ireland, and the Irish Parliament congratulated her on this, but it wasn't for another 80 years that a merger between the two kingdoms was considered, mainly for reasons of political stability in Ireland. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was created in 1801.

Wales gets no mention here because Wales became an English protectorate in the 1300s and became part of England in the 1500s.

    @everyone
Thanks for enlightening my poor ignorant person on the subject, I had no idea, as you probably found out.
anyway: how do the different peoples experience this? even if the merging was peacefull, are there still any grudges?

Grudges, see 'The Troubles' [Northern Ireland]

It's a rather disastrous and confusing affair (ie- don't get involved). Things seem to be sorting themselves out, despite recent incidents.

Ha grudges abound. The Isles are probably the only place in the world where half the population hates the other half because one's grandda punched the other's in the face over a spilled pint in a pub after a lost derby match yet we still function.

I can assure you 100% the Balkans takes that gold. With the Middle East in a close second.

Don't worry prince, we'll never speak of it again.

We function because we are just as similar as we are different.

You're forgetting that the religious and ethnic aspect is nowhere near as divided in those two examples. Only Northern Ireland, of all the regions in the Isles, is your creed and heritage a real determining factor in your political outlook.
