So I took my younger brothers to see Coraline in 3D today. There was one preview among the many random G/PG movies coming out soon that really stood out.
That was 9, a new CGI movie produced by Tim Burton and directed by Bekmambetov.
I was apathetic at first since it seemed just another CG movie a-la Disney-Pixar and the like (not that those are bad usually). A few landscape shots of a post-apocalyptic world and an animated doll as its sole 'human' survivor didn't seem too striking, having seen the like with Wall-E recently enough.
Then came the full visual assault with nightmarish mechanical monsters and almost tribal, feral battles to the death with makeshift blades and scissors while the titular character, 9, and his 'kin' live in fear. At this point my head was one big, 'what the-' followed closely by an 'oh man!' as Tim Burton's name came on screen.
Who else saw the trailer? And who else felt blown away after an unassuming first few seconds expecting far more childish movie trailers preceding Coraline?
Looks very interesting particularly anything coming from Burton. If you notice a lot of these traditional directors eg Spielberg, Burton both seem to have made very unorthodox CGI films, which gives the impression that these types of movies are taking an evolutionary change from mere kids movies to deep dramatic features.
This said I really enjoyed Wall-E after watching it with my little brother, blended great animation with a moving storyline and inner message that even 8 year old’s can understand. I’m curious to see what Burton can come up with, but I can already see where he’s taking his trademark dark and dreary settings in this feature.
