    Icon8 please help modding?

    i have a terrible problem where nothing i change seems to take effect in the game, im just going to tell you what i did from the beggining so you can tell me if i made a mistake, and thank you for reading all of this, i know its long, but i just cant seem to figure this out, ok, i installed MIITW into a folder on my desktop called mideival, not the default directory, and i also installed the kingdoms patch, and so extracted the files into the data folder, and made a backup copy of the data folder, then the first thing i did was went and i removed poland from the ownership of polish knights, and just put slave but when i went and played the game nothing changed, and then i went and typed a whole bunch of random things and deleted half the things from export_descr_units.txt to see if the game was even reading the file, and it would surely ctd without it thought, but it DID NOT. So then i went and temporarily removed half the files from the data folder, and the game still worked, i dont understand, i thought it would surely crash without them. It almost seems the game isnt even reading the data folder, because nothing i change takes effect in the game, now in the desktop\mideival folder (the place i installed MIITW) i changed the preferences.cfg to remove banners, and it worked, so the main folder i know works, but the game just doesnt seem to read the data folder and its making me angry cuz i really wanna mod the game, sombody please help

    You forgot the magic line in the medieval2.preferences.cfg file. Open it with notepad and put these two lines in there:

    [io]
    file_first = true

    Save and make the file read-only.

    Now the game will read the unpacked\changed files first. In default it will alwys read from the packs first.

    uh, now it seems to be happening with the data\text folder what am i suppose to do about that? the faction name wont change when i change it in the expanded.txt and even if i remove some of the files the game still works :/

    The reason it still works when you delete some files is because the game can still read them out of the .pack files - which are still there, even though you unpacked. Getting back to your problem, try deleting the expanded.txt.strings.bin file. That will cause the expanded.txt to regenerate.

    Reinstalling and formatting your hard drive are not necessary. Download this editor. It will allow you to directly edit the .strings.bin files.
