Default [CTD] With fresh installation of Medieval II & Kingdoms

Since no one can help me in the support forum I'm going to post this here, too. Yeah I know, forum rules...please forgive me.

So I actually installed this thing three times today. First time with Medieval I Total War, The Kingdoms expansion and Stainless Steel 6.1. The latter ran without problems, but I decided to go back to the original game.

So I uninstalled SS 6.1 and tried to start the normal game. It gave me an error message without anything written in it.

Ok, so I thought this was because I had SS 6.1 installed, so I reinstalled the whole game. Medieval II + Kingdoms + Kingdoms patch 1.05. Same thing happened.

I thought it could be the patch v1.05 so again I reinstalled everything (cleaned directories and registry before), Medieval II + Kingdoms and nothing else. Still the same problem.

    My system.log gives me this:

AGAIN: NOTHING IS MODDED, it's just the vanilla game plus vanilla Kingdoms fresh installation!

    What can I do?

That is very weird. An error message without anything in it? That really sounds weird. Maybe reinstall your operating system? If the the game worked fine before, then it is most likely that there is something wrong with your computer. Reinstall the os.

OS is quite fresh (a month old), everything is clean (defraged, registry cleaned, temp files cleaned...I'm very tidy when it comes to my computer *g*) and I have all the latest drivers installed (despite some old entries in my signature, just ignore them).

What was working before was Steainless Steel 6.1, not the vanilla game, which makes this even stranger. Why would the mod work, but the original game wont? Patch 1.03 (vanilla kingdom) or patch 1.05 (patch #1 for kingdoms) don't make a difference neither.

hmm, perhaps the game itself is actually bugged like M2:TW, scratch in disc? or missing installation component that messes up the compatibility? you playing on Vista? and perhaps when SS 6.1 was uninstalled it removed part of the original game?

No, the disc is fine, the installation went without problems. Yes, I play on Vista. And yes maybe SS 6.1 did, but that's why I reinstalled the game TWICE, both times a clean install without any mods.

Ehh.. Vista is the problem. Ok, I am not hundred percently sure, but I think it is. I had a Vista installed on my computer not too long ago, and many games didn't work. (M2 seemed to be fine though..) In my language vista means chicken.

    Ok, a question:
You say you start the game and it gives you an error. Have you tried launching the game through any of the Kingdoms shourtcuts? Maybe install the retrofit mod and try launching the game with retrofit mod icon. (retrofit mod simply adds several features from Kingdoms to the original game)

Retrofit mod....sounds good. I wanted the vanilla game (SS 6.1 seems to be great, no doubt, but it was too much, I just wanted to play right on ^^), but getting the kingdom features in it seems just right. I'll look for the mod.

Oh and I tried to start the game with the "kingdoms.exe", but I didn't try any of the new campaign shortcuts. I'll give that a try, too. And what I also forgot is to try the compatibility mode. ^^

you get the error with no text when you try to start the game from kingdoms.exe.
you have to start the game from medieval2 exe or the shortcuts on the desktop.

Oh...boy am I...hungry. I'm going to eat now.

Thanks for the advice. What good is the kingdoms.exe then?

well the exe itself is not good for anything.
but all kingdoms mods use batch files that launch kindoms.exe with -mods mods/your_mod at the end (that includes the kingdoms campaigns too)

the link on your desktop may be bugged to try using the lancher in the installation folders.
