    Default How to capture timbuktu?

I have tried to land a ship in the desert as moors and that doesnt work. I tried sending merchants through the mountains into the desert and that doesnt work either. I would like to know how to capture timbuktu as spain or moors because I hear that it has 3 gold mines and slaves and ivory.

    help appreciated thanks

you have to manually travel south between the mountains that appear between the two North African cities. I mean manually in the way that you have to right click move every turn. Keep heading south.

ya, telling them to travel their wont work, they wont find a path, you have to discover the way to Timbuktu, just like most of the African settlements, I recommend as Spain move a bunch of priests their until population is 100% then move east to the settlement beside that, after that you should have them all as cardinals and move them into the Moor's regions and work your way back to Spain converting each population to catholic, by the time you get there no matter how many priests you originally sent they will max, or close to max piety

A slight "cheat" would be to remove fog of war and click onto the settlement to move a set of military units towards the settlement. Path finding will then work. Once you know the path it is easier.

On the other hand, for a first time adventure -- it can be fun to search for a fabled lost treasure in the true spirit of the adventurers of the time. I sent a expedition and searched myself. I had a blast.

The choice is yours though. Have fun!!!

Personally, I greatly dislike the way the fog of war works in most circumstances. In my mind, if a settlement has achieved Large Town + or Castle + in size, it would be known, relatively, where it is, and one could easily ask around and find out on the way. For this reason, when sending diplomats or invading armies into "undiscovered" lands, I will remove the fog of war temporarily, assuming it is not some back-wood bumpkin town of rebles.

That being said, I take great pains to visually ignore any armies or other information which might be revealed by removing the fog of war as I send my men on their way.

I agree on the concept, but you are a better man than me if you can ignore the "extra" information. I just struggle through and use a map with the cities when looking for where to go. They did have maps back then. Little points of interest like cities and ports might have been noted.

Maybe the maps were not accurate as today's versions, but they did the job.
