Default Stopp saving games - discovered it was saving them all to my C drive - 12g of them!

After not being able to reload my latest save, I checked my C drive and it had 12g worth of saved games on it - totally filled the partition up, and therefore I couldn't save any more - and made the computer run like crap

It's because of the naming system when you save - it automatically creates a new save, rather than overwriting a previous save like the other total war games did

Anyway just thought I'd mention it, will have to be careful from now on to overwrite rather than fresh save each time - or does anyone have an idea how to change the drive for my saved games? (running a 1tb, space is not an issue outside the operating system partition)

Don't overwrite too much, or preferably at all, as this can cause corrupted saves by itself. Not only in ETW but in other games as well. Oblivion is a prime example of this. Better to only save pnce per save, but maybe have less saves than you have had in the past if you managed to rack up 12GB worth of them.

the save file folder is located here:

for vista (type %appdata% into Run then open up The Creative Assembly folder.

I saved every year (sometimes twice per year) in each campaign i was playing - played maratha / prussia / england / pueblo / louisianna / inuit so far - but some are only early on.

Reason I saved so often is because I'm always testing things as I play - doing some wild stuff to see what happens, then going back to the save point to continue the campaign. Now i know this happens I'll just save less lol

Yes it sure does stack up - didn't realize they were like 80m each, that's bizzare for a save file size

I've been saving games in a 4 turn rotation, saving before ending my turn each time and overwriting the oldest save.

If something hideous happens on the end turn, such as a white screen ctd I can hopefully go back a turn or two and correct whatever happened that might have caused that. I've only had that happen once so far in the campaign I've been playing, somewhere around turn 100 and now going on turn 120.

It would've been a bummer to only have one (corrupted) save and lose the entire campaign as a result.

However, I'd rather not accumulate multiple gigs of saved games.

So, just what is being saved? I assumed some text files with stats etc. But, maybe it makes a copy of your entire ETW folder!

Each Save file is approx 70-76 Mbs - it adds up doesn't it?

My saves get bigger the further into the campaign I go. 1704 is around 55mb, but 1754 is 86mb. Guess the more units and more developed it all gets, the larger the save.

I discovered this a while ago when I was looking for where the cache is kept. So I have just been cleaning them out every now and then. Not an issue too much, but for sure, they should have included a delete option in game. I never over write manual saves and touch wood, have not had any CTD due to saves... which is no major plus as I get numerous other triggers for ctd

12GB ... thats about 100 saves ... and thats assuming 100MB Size on Average, mine in late campaign have somewhere between 60-80MB...

    600MB
Interesting, I've had a lot of currupted saves. Thanks for the heads up with the idea that saving over things increases risk for curruption.

This sucks I have a small "C Drive Partition" and don't want it full of saves. I like to keep it clean as it's quicker to back it up, it should at least go into the desktop my documents which you can move to a bigger drive but even then I would prefer to select my own location. I do know one way of moving it using Junctions but I really don't like doing it this way. Is there a way to edit the game to change the save location?

With the many CTD issues occuring (not so much the memory related ones, but the "if you take this settlement from this faction" your game will crash when you interact with them in certain ways going forward) you really ought to be keeping a lot of saves, so at least you have a chance of restoring your game to a pre-corrupted point.

I'm keeping 10 - 15 saves active, one for each turn, but then manually deleting older saves from my save directory on a periodic basis. Seems to be a decent workaround. Yeah, really odd that you cant delete save games from within the game itself.
