What flags you mean? Those over your squads?

Go to options User Interface.... there you can turn them off

You can turn them off, but you have to do it every time you play a battle...they just reappear each time.

    Unfortunately you are right....

This make me angry so much, but the only way to get rid of this damn floating flags is to turn them off every time on land battles...

I wonder where is an entry that is related to this problem - only to read option -

Im intersted in this, because for some reason my flags are enabled every battle, even though they are set to mouse over. If I start a battle, everything is on, but if I change just one thing everything goes to how its supposed to be, but doesnt save that or whatever for the next battle.

Guys, look up your preferences file in the script folder for ETW (on Windows XP, this folder is found along the following directory, C:\Documents and Settings\(your account on the computer)\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Empire\scripts, which is visible only if you've set your computer to show all hidden foilders and files) and locate the entries for ui_land/naval_unit_ids there. Edit the values for those entries to 2 = never, save in Unicode, and then change perhaps also the preferences file itself to "read only" in its properties. No more ridiculous flagpoles on the battlefield.

That sounds interesting idea, but i tried and nothing changed.....

I opened the preferences.txt file located in my C: drive i changed the values and saved as "read only" - nothing happens.

I started a battle of Brandywine Creek as British and they had a floating flags above their units!

Maybe this option work only in Grand Campaign battles?

I will try to first change the floating flags option in main menu of ETW to "Never" and then saved the preferences file to "read only".

I should check if your idea works for naval battles.

Heh, ok i made different things this time...

I started ETW at first, then i changed in main menu options naval and land flags from "always" to "never".

    I closed ETW.

I opened preferences file, i changed the two values from "0" to "2" and saved as unicode and only to read.

    Then i started ETW,

The flags appeared still above the units heads....

Maybe some mods are making troubles with the floating flags? I have Empire Total Flag conversion, but even when i disabled this mod the flags appeared still above the units!!

If anyone has the same problem, please help me.

Perhaps someone should create a mod that removes the preferences panel from options menu in Empire Total War.

So, the player could have only the part of preferences panel visible.

Deleting the preferences.txt do nothing, only the player option will be deleted and overwritten by default ETW options.

I will try to disable other mods and try once more.

    Problem still remains....

To close this discussion i recommend a following mod that removes completely the floating flags:

I hope this helps the people who has Empire Total War 1.5 installed.

Sorry for not checking this thread for some time.

After said changes in the preferences file, this is how the battlefield always looks on my computer, as soon as the battle starts, without any further changes in the UI settings:

It is easy as it sounds : i have got Empire Total War 1.5 version without the newest 1.6 patch installed.

This is the reason why i created my no floating flags mod.

Well, I've had my ETW working in the above way long before patch 1.6 was released. Don't think I waited for any patch to be released to set my game up without the flagpoles...
