When is a faction destroyed?

While playing as Britain, I captured France The French had only their America territories and Strasburg.As soon as Bavaria captured Strasbourg though, the French were destroyed. Doesn't it need all of a factions regions to be captured so that it will be destroyed?

Looks like once a European power loses all it's holding in Europe that it's destroyed and any colonial provinces become an emergent faction or go to rebels of sorts.

hm...but then, how will Greece i.e. become emergent since the Ottomans hold provinces in both Asia and Europe?

PS: About the colonials, Quebec appeared so you must be right

I'm not sure, but I think that if a country has colonies and all their mainland countries get captured they loose. It doesn't matter that they still have regions overseas.

Greece will emerge only if that province rebels. Or, if you destroy the Ottomans and then let it rebel, that should guarantee they emerge, but odds are being at war with you.

But yes, if you destroy the powerbase of a European faction, who is running their colonies anymore? No-one. So they revert to rebels or emergent factions, depending on the region.

To be more clear: When a faction is no longer possesing any regions in his home region, he'll loose the game. This also counts for the nations in the regions India and America.
In E:TW the Ottomans, Barbary States, Persia and Morocco are part of Europe. I'm 95% sure of Persia, because one of their provinces is part of the region India.

Yup. As the Ottomans, I took their three nearest cities and when I did, their 4th, which is apparently in India, had Afghanistan emerge as a faction out of it.

Crap thing was, my game crashed immediately on their first turn

Protip: Don't declare war on Quebec. I did after capturing Acadia, and it took me about 10 years to fight my way through the forests and over the Hudson.
