    Hi All!
Its good idea to make such formula. Im trying to create some set of Alexandrian era units and found nearly same formula and values for armor. But with some correction. Excel table contains all values + formulas.

General formula for armor value should looks like this

    armor = round-up ((helmet + all kind of head protection) + torso protection + (shoulder + hips)/2 + legs protection + arms protection + cloth/10)

    Head gear:

    Formula for head gear:

Helmet = Helmet + (neck protection + temples/cheeks protection + additional cheeks/jaw protection + additional protection (back deflector + additional helmet metal ring) + face protection)/2

This is values only for head protection!

    Standard material = plate bronze = 1
Leather (or linen) reenforced with metal stripes = plate bronze /2 (only for helmet and for neck not for any other additional protection parts)
Leather (or linen) reenforced with metal stripes = plate bronze /4 (for temples/cheeks and any other additional protection parts)
    Chain/scale iron = plate bronze
Plate iron = plate bronze + 1 (only for helmet itself not for any additional protection parts)

    Thats gives us this values:

Cap :-) of bronze = Bronze helmet for upper part of a head = 1

    Neck protection plate bronze/iron scale/plate/chain = 1
    Temples/cheeks protection bronze/iron scale/plate/chain = 1
Additional cheeks/jaw protection (bronze or iron plate) or iron scale/chain= 1
Additional cheeks protection leather or linen = 0.5
Additional bronze or iron protection ring + back deflector (bronze or iron) = 1
Face protection bronze or iron plate = 1

    Finally we have

    Leather cap = 0.5

    Leather helmet (some balcan barbaric warriors like illyrian, some thracians) = leather helmet + (neck(leather) + temples/cheeks(leather) + additional cheeks(leather))/2 = 0.5 + (0.5 + 0.5 + 0.5)/2 = 1.25

Simple bronze bowl helmet with no back or cheeks = 1

Standard hoplite/early princeps/triarii style helmet = Simple bronze helmet with temples/cheeks protection with bronze neck protection = 2

    Legionary helmet = Galea/Italian type (Imperial Helmet (bronze)) = bronze helmet + (temples/cheeks protection + neck protection + additional cheeks/jaw protection + back of head deflector and reenforcment iron/bronze ring)/2 = 1 + (1 + 1 + 1 + 1)/2 = 3

    Phalangites helmet = Macedon stile helmet (bronze) = bronze helmet + (temples/cheeks protection + neck protection + additional cheeks/jaw protection)/2 = 1 + (1 + 1 + 1)/2 = 2.5

    Hypaspists/ Pezhetairoi helmet = Macedon stile helmet (bronze) = bronze helmet + (temples/cheeks protection + neck protection + additional cheeks/jaw protection)/2 = 1 + (1 + 1 + 1 + 1)/2 = 3

    Elite hoplites = Corinthian style full covered = bronze helmet + (neck + temples/cheeks + additional cheaks/jaw protection + face protection)/2 = 1 + (1 + 1 + 1 + 1)/2 = 3

    Cataphract fully covered = iron helmet + (neck + temples/cheeks + additional cheeks/jaw protection + face protection)/2 = 2 + (1 + 1 + 1 + 1) = 4

    Persian metal bowl helmet w/leather/fabric curtain = bronze helmet + (neck(leather) + temples/cheeks(leather) + additional cheeks/jaw(leather))/2 = 1 + (0.5 + 0.25 + 0.25)/2 = 1.5

    Persian metal bowl helme w/ mail curtain = bronze helmet + (neck + temples/cheeks + additional cheeks/jaw)/2 = 3

    Neck:
    Egyptian neckpiece = 1
    Neck covering = 2

    Simple clothing:
Short sleave tunic with bare legs = 1
Long sleave tunic with pants = 2
Long sleave tunic with hooded/covered head = 2.5
    Short cloack w/o hood = 1
    Long cloack w/o hood = 1.5
    Cloak with hood = cloack + 0.5
Long Cloack for front and back (like in thessalian cavalry) w/o hood = 2.5
Short trousers wool, linen, thin leather = 1
    Long trousers = 1.5

    Torso/Back:
    Standard = thick leather = 1
    Padded leather/reenforced leather = Standard + 1 = 2
Bronze breastplate = 1 alone, 2 with backplate, add up to 1 more point for leather tunic underneath
    Extruded linen/ heavy leather coat reenforced with metal = Standard + 2 = 3
    Leather cuirass (standard hoplite type) = Standard + 2.5 = 3.5
    Chain mail/ = Standard + 3 = 4
    Scale male = Standard + 4 = 5
    Plate mail = Standard + 5 = 6
Bronze monolith cuirass short (infantry type) = 7
Bronze monolith cuirass longer type (cavalry)/ iron monolith cuirass = 8

    So we have:

Thick leather tunic (wbb heavy peltasts) = 1
Light Padded linen(like militia hoplite in vanilla 1.1 have) = 2
    phalangites/hypaspists armor = 3
Early legionary (body part of lorica hamata) = 4
Cataphract/ (body part of lorica squamatae) = 5
Late legionary (body part of lorica segmentata) = 6
Elite hoplite/pezhetairoi/some roman generals (lorica musculata) = 7
    Hetairoi cavalry = 8

    Shoulder:
    Pteryges (Linen/leather strips covering shoulders) = 1
Leather tunic short sleeves (shoulders&upper arms) = 0.5
Chain armor (covering shoulder) = 2
Scale armor (covering shoulder) = 2 (because scale armor especially vulnerable from an upward stab)
Plate armor (covering shoulder) = 3

    Abdomen/pelvis/upper thighs:
    Pteryges (Linen/leather strips covering pelvis/upper thighs) = 1
    Leather tunic long lap (front&back) = 0.5
    Chain armor (covering abdomen/pelvis/upper thighs) = 1.5
    Scale armor (covering abdomen/pelvis/upper thighs) = 2
Plate (bands) armor (covering abdomen/upper thighs) = 3
Wide metal belt/buckle = 0.5 (Samnites tended to wear these.)
Additional Apron/belt with apron (legionary sporran) (any material) = 0.5
    Additional Long chain/scale protection = 0.5

So we have with additional body protection:

Hoplite additional body protection (pteryges for shoulders and hips) = 2
    Early legionary (chaim shoulders/sleeves + chain armor for pelvis/ abdomen + belt with apron + long chain armor protection) = 2 + 1.5 + 0.5 + 0.5 = 4.5
    Late legionary (plate armor shoulders + chain armor for pelvis/ abdomen + belt with apron + long chain armor protection) = 3 + 1.5 + 0.5 + 0.5 = 5.5
    Cataphract (scale armor shoulders + scale armor for pelvis/ abdomen + apron + long chain armor protection) = 2 + 2 + 0.5 + 0.5 = 5

    Legs:

    Bronze greaves = 1
    Chain/scale protection for hips = 1
Protection of couplings between greaves and hips protection (chain/scale) = 0.5
Leather shaps (see Berzerkers) = 1 or 2

    Arms:
    Banded/Scale Armour to wrist = 3
Fully mail covered arms = 2
Metal bicep band = 0.5 if wide
    Wide forearm leather/wrist leather/ = 0.5 to 1
    Metal forearm protection = 1

    Finally we have such examples:

    Late legionary = Galea + lorica segmentata + sporran = (bronze helmet with reenforcement + cheeks/jaw protection + deflector) + (plate body armor + plate shoulders + additional hips chain protection + arpon) + (short tunic + short trousers) = 3 + 6 + (3 + 1.5 + 0.5 + 0.5)/2 + (1 + 1)/10 = round-up(11.95) = 12

    Early legionary = Galea + lorica hamata + sporran = (bronze helmet with reenforcement + cheeks/jaw protection + deflector) + (chain body armor + chain shoulders + additional hips chain protection + arpon) + (short tunic + short trousers) = 3 + 4 + (2 + 1.5 + 0.5 + 0.5)/2 + (1 + 1)/10 = 3 + 4 + 2.25 + 0.2 = round-up(9.45) = 9

    Phalangites (according to vanilla) = macedon type helmet (bronze helmet + nech + temples) + extruded linen cuirass + pteryges hips = 2 + 3 + 0.5 = round-up (5.5)

    Hetairoi cavalry = beotian helmet + long bronze monolith cuirass + pteryges hips & shoulders = 2 + 8 + 1 = 11

    Shields:
I think its very usable addition made in RTR 5.1 (sorry don't remember who was creator:-(
    so shields looks like

Shield protection (infantry) = Shield size*2 + additional shield protection
Shield protection (cavalry) = Shield size + additional shield protection

    Shield size:
1 - very small shilds (fist shields - no one really exist in vanilla RTW)
2 - small shields (any shape) - used by most peltasts, slingers, levy phalangites
3 - medium shields (any shape) - used by light auxilia, phalangites (accordingg for example:-) Alexander movie)
4 - large shields (any shape) - hoplon, scutum, square legionary shield

    Additional shield protection:
    padded with metal = 1
    Wattled = -1

One more question - secondary armor. According to text in desc_export_unit.txt - it can be additional protection (for example horse protection). But value for cataphract still 0, but it shouldn't be zero!:-)
So - horse/camel armor should = head protection + front protection + long horsecloth + back protection
Any part should be = 1 for scale, chain, plate armor
Any part should be = 0.5 for leather armor

Sorry, i didn't understand a word of that, what are you reffering too? where does this information come from or go?

This is like a table for creating stats for defense. So you can combine all the appropriate numbers to come up with stats for units.
