Go do some research on the 18th century. Almost every soldier was the same. It's been like that since then. There were no special super berserker units or flaming pigs.
How can their be uniques? The guy above is right: standardization. I do believe that there should be elite units though, formed out of highly experience units.
Yeah, the types of units haven't seen much variation since the 18th century. There are dramatic variations in training, though. For example, modern American generals compare continental European soldiers to American National Guardsmen in terms of training quality. A significant amount of the vast US military budget goes towards training, and that's probly the reason.
On that note, wouldn't it be cool if you could say, choose to create a Line Infantry unit, then modify how long and well you want to train them. Lets say you don't have a war on and have plenty of time, maybe you'll spend the max on training and get Line Infantry with perhaps 3 levels of experience when theyre built - but it will take longer and they will be more expensive. The other side of the coin would be when the enemy are at the gates and you need men now.
Another interesting thing to ponder is the standardization of units brings and even greater focus on strategy and tactics. If your enemy has essentially the same unit catalog to choose from, then the pressure is on you to choose a more optimal unit distribution, and then to outwit the opponent on the field - AI issues aside - it becomes less rock paper scissors and more creativity. Which isn't to say rock paper scissors is gone, it certainly isn't, but given that your armies are now completely made up of mostly rock and the enemy's is also mostly rock, well.. you gotta think more now!
