Default US poised to join Mexico drug war

The US is drawing up comprehensive plans to help Mexico in its fight against drug-trafficking, a senior military official has told Congress.

    ..

The military is already employing border security techniques mastered in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, including unmanned aerial vehicles and technology capable of locating underground tunnels, reports say.

    ..

Department of Homeland Security, is now expected to produce a broad new initiative to confront a drug war that has killed thousands in Mexico and spilled over into US cities.

"I think we'll have good plans come out of this work this week,"
    Gen Renuart told the hearing.

wonder what this 'broad new initiative' is?
    any ideas?

I predict some US troops in Mexico.

Why isn't the UN getting its act together and sending some troops to help the Mexican government?

isn't that expecting a little too much from the UN.

also isn't this a internal problem in Mexico, their own issue? if the UN was to get involved here than they should get involved in places like Colombia, Brasil and all the small European countries that help distribute drugs.

US is causing a lot of trouble with the economy crisis... and now you come to this where Mexico has to solve this problem if US has the most drug users in the world?

most of the drugs made in Mexico are bought by Americans (and to a lesser extent Canadians) thus fueling the drug cartels. of course, this could all be avoided if drugs were legalized, buts that's a whole different can of worms.

I honestly don't ever see that happening Justinian. The Mexican people and government are too proud, and too sensitive about it.

technically it isnt really obligated to go in.. yet.

UN arent required to go anyway, mexico has the no.1 power on the planet right next door to sort out the problem for them, it would be disasterous if the US was not to help the blokes in its own back yard.

I'm not entirely convinced this major offensive is going to achieve anything. As long as the market exists, someone will take their place.

    *sigh*

    Waste of money and lives.
sure it will go on forever, but they can limit its effects on the region..

    How?
The cartels have money , power , corrupt police officers , corrupt politicians ... its like living in a non communist NKorean country without a "dear leader" controlling all the land , but instead still having lots of them trying to reach for power... not for Mexico but because of power , money and lets say " prestige "..

This problem cannot be solved by Americans. It is up to the mexicans to prove to the world that their country is viable enough to have faith in.

They need to stop relying on their neighbors for help, and start becoming self-reliant.

    I agree ...
    but let me tell you..
How are you gonna attack people who have better weapons than Its army ?
    with rocks?
    I dont think so man...
It is just to hard for Mexican citizens to do anything against Drug cartels because they got the power , the guns... hell even Bazookas!

possibly, but the 'war on drugs' (makes me cringe saying it) is a worldwide problem, not only mexico's.

Mexicos president ... Felipe Calderon rejected the idea of having foreign aid ( soldiers from other countries) into Mexico ...
Nicholas Sarkozy was in Mexico in a meeting with Him, Nicholas offered Felipe Calderon Help with the drug war but he rejected it...
i dont think any US troop will be in Mexican soil ... you know why ?
Because if the Mexican President lets any other troops from other countries to help him , the whole nation will look "weak" ...
that is why The president Rejected any help...

Well maybe its as simple as using the prisoners held in the US as a source of intel against the drug lords. And non military help by sending advisers from the FBI and CIA Special Activities Division.
