    Default Naval weird occurrences

I have had a couple of weird events related to naval game, I wonder if someone could tell if they are bugs or features.

    1. I am attacked by pirates. Outgunned, I manage to sink three of their smaller ships, then retreat my force intact (still being hopelessly outgunned by the remaining enemy). I thought I had acheived a glorious feat. I felt very smart. But at the end of the battle, all my fleet was sunk!

    2. I loaded a savegame to check if I could reproduce that weird situation under slightly different circumstances. In the new battle, I'm doing pretty well again. One of my sixth-rates is damaged but still in the green. Well the port side hull is like yellowish-green but nothing to worry about. All of a sudden, without being fired at or anything, that ship started sinking. And it went down real fast, like it had a big hole under the waterline. Bug, or can it happen to any ship to spontaneuosly sink (like if some hidden critical damage suddenly triggers)?

    1. i don't know if that happens all the time or only if you have no movement points left.

    2. It just happens, lucky shot by the other ship. The same thing can happen for you though

The first one seems like a bug, although i have never had this myself("Death Before Dishonour" so to speak )

    The second, just happens.
Sometimes a ship which seems in ok health slowly sinks, which seems to me like rotten luck, otherwise, the AI gets in a lucky shot and sinks/obliterates you.

This indeed works the other way around like caralampio said, i have obliterated quite a few AI ships so far in a single shot.

Thats really all there is to say i think

The first one is pretty mush the norm in Total War games - you lose when you're out of movement points and you're the defender, and you lose the army as well as the battle.

#2 seems to happen from time to time. I recently invaded Courland (inexplicably still around in 1774) and engaged their fleet which had two sloops and about 6 of the Galleys. One of my entirely healthy Third Rates was fired on by one of their last galleys (a salvo of maybe five guns) and a lucky shot must've detonated the magazine. The ship exploded, split in half, and sank in about five seconds.

The explosions are lots of fun to watch though

OK I have played out several naval battles after the ones of the previous report. An average of two of my ships sink spontaneously during each battle. I mean, nobody's firing at them, the enemy is faraway, the ships have hulls that still show safe green. Simply, all of the sudden they stop dead in the water and are sinking. No fire, no explosion, no enemy firing, no nothing. This has to be a bug.

Here it is, the infamous hole under the waterline that makes ships sink for "no apparent reason" (it is harder to see in ships not painted white in the bottom hull).

If its anything like fires, make sure you stop ALL orders and let your ship sit still to deal with the situation. Fires get put out real quick this way, maybe your carpenter can only plug a hole in the hull if your ship isn't moving, too?

Your first problem is strange. My vulnerable troop ship (hint: don't put a whole army on a lone sloop) was able to dodge pirates indefinitely by constantly withdrawing from battle, even when out of movement points. Perhaps you got trapped against the coastline? Then again, I never actually attacked to pirates, so maybe that's the difference.

On your second one, that's not a bug. Even if your ship doesn't sink straight away, you can sometimes trigger it by turning (I once capsized a boat in this way) or once the water builds up enough. Occassionally I've seen a little water-droplet symbol appear (in the same place that the fire symbol would appear), which I presume means that my ship was taking on water. And, like fires, there's a chance you'll either sink or it will get repaired.

Yeah I have resorted to stopping my ship whenever possible if it is on fire, the water drop appears, or the crew says it is worried by hull damage. Unfortunately, you don't always get a warning.

Its not that it didnt happen. Its that, it didnt happen that often. Ships of that age surrendered or fled far more often than they sunk or exploded, because the latter requires very, very lucky shots indeed and a volume of shots that isnt always replicated in game. One's ships should not be sinking after one salvo, or at least only do so in a blue moon. Holes could be patched, and emergency repairs made, even in the midst of battle.

I once used a single light galley against 3 pirate galleons and as they sailed my way 2 of them exploded . The last one destroyed me .
