So this has kind of been bugging me in ETW…the system of trade raid just seems so blah….move anywhere on a given line and you defacto get privateering income. What about being able to commission privateer fleets, you command them just like a normal fleet, and you can attack other nation’s ships without having to declare war. It would also make for some more interesting naval battles (smaller engagements given that you can’t group your privateer ships with your actual declared naval ships), it doesn’t seem the AI builds armadas so I usually end up with a single large stack going around andslapping the dinky little 4 and 5 ship fleets the AI likes to use.
A way to generate privateers to be commissioned would be if a nation is destroyed, it’s navy doesn’t just vanish into thin air, they are turned into privateers who work for the nations.
That’s also another thing that kind of bugs me, if I am in the east indies trade zone, and Spain is sitting there with a juicy fleet…I have to declare war before I can attack them…but in reality, if I was 6000 miles from Spain, in the middle of the ocean, and sank all the ships in her fleet, how is Spain going to know? Many ships of that era left port and never returned without any explanations. You should be able to do naval attacks and have the outcome determine the relations, if you sink everything then the relations wouldn’t change, but if you captured or some of their ships escaped, or they beat you, then war would be declared.
