Just curious as I'm trying out my new rig, could anyone suggest a good M2TW/kingdoms mod?
Something akin in spirit to XGM would be nice...
I wish, but my machine is not poweful enough...do you know the requirements? i think that with a new video card i should be able to do it.
I play M2. Have tried several mods and so far my most favourite by a long lead is Broken Crescent - it's for M2, but you can have kingdoms installed. Amazing units, much improved diplomacy and faction variety that just covers pretty much anybody might like. Soon a new version will be out.
Rusichi mod has amazing units too but it's more specialised to Russia.
I haven't played Stainless Steel, but it looks like the mod closest to XGM in spirit. Plus it has bunch of submods.
I strongly suggest Broken Crescent, but you can instal SS too since they are mod foldered.
I would go with Stainless Steel mod it pretty good and dose come close to the XGM spirit I would say so give it a try if you dont like it you can deleat it with out messing up kingdom in the prosses. Though like with any mod it is a matter of taste, as for me Stainless Steel has been my mod for kingdoms.
I've just installed M2TW on my new rig as well and played a few battles. Looks good so far. I thought of trying Lands to Conquer mod, before moving to full-conversion mods. Basically, that's a vanilla-enhancing mod, with numerous tweaks and improvements to AI, but no new units, factions, or such. Most interestingly, it replaces the main M2TW campaigns with an early, late, high era campaigns, a la MTW, and adds a number of sort of provincial campaigns on smaller maps (btw, there is an Italian prov campaign there). This is a good option if you have no time/intention to play grand campaign all the way through. You'll need Kingdoms to run the latest version of the mod. The install will break vanilla M2TW, but will not affect Kingdoms campaigns, afaik.
I have M2, but only bought it for a specific mod (currently still WIP, though) and don't play it much, so I unfortunately can't help you on any good released mods to play.
But I am glad to see someone close to the development of XGM has M2, though. Perhaps its a tiny baby step toward "XGM: Medieval 2 Total War Edition"...![]()
i played MTW2 alot , the only 2 mods i use is 'retrofit' and 'great unit addon' , both are great.
retrofit introduces alot of the features from 'kingdoms' into MTW2 , no reason not to use it really it just makes the game better. It's also very well done and easy to use.
the unit addon adds alot of units from 'kingdoms' into MTW2 , and also alot off specific faction and city units.
I haven't played in a while and I never bought Kingdoms, although I will eventually, but I never found a satisfactory mod up to par with XGM. On the other hand, XGM has been maturing for quite some time. Broken Crescent was pretty nice, but could still use work, like with the invincible vanilla style generals.
Σύνθεσις
The Broken Cresent Mod uses a similar map to XGM and alot of the factions are Muslim and use a heavy amount of Horse Archers. Combat is more unique than in any of the other mods I have played. BC is a good choice if your still looking for MTW2 mods.
I also play a lot of Stainless Steel. This mod offers a huge map with many factions. Gameplay and decisions need to be more strategic as the AI is quite good and recieves monetary bonuses to boost its military. SS combat is also unique and you will notice differances from other mods when you assult castle/cities.
Lands to Conquer was the first MTW2 mod that I used. Its basically an enhanced vanilla version. The AI again gets monatary bonuses to boost its military. Combat is similar to vanilla, but it can be a fun mod if your new to MTW2.
Deus Lo Vult is a mod that uses alot of roleplaying in it. You will spend a lot of your time developing the traits of family members and generals. This mod has a more historical feel and is good for roleplaying. One thing that I really like about this mod is that the AI gets a garrision script for all of its castles/cities. This makes conquest difficult but more enjoyable.
I would recomend any of the above mods for MTW2. I hope that you can find and enjoy one.
Yea, these two mods are great! Well, I've only played SS actually but I hear a lot of good things coming from Broken Crescent.
Stainless Steel is very nice! All factions of the Kingdom add-on are added on the campaign map alongside the others. There's so many cool different countries spread around Europe now. The diplomacy AI is very good, they act quite naturally whenever you make peace or trade treaties.
Another thing that I quite like is that if a nation has come down to one city, they get this 20.000 money boost. Lots of fullstack armies are protecting their last city. Its very hard but awesome if you beat down a nation like this. And this system sorta protects nations from dying out so quickly. I remember I had lots of difficulties in past if I brought down a nation to one city. Conquering the last city took quite some time and patience. I have been defeated before in battle like this. Make sure you are prepared for the final blow.
Other then that, SS offers a lot more:
- New units
- New stats for all units
- Redesigned campaign map
- Improved battle AI
- Improved campaign AI
- etc.

M2TW is pretty fun, though it always seems like the computer is reluctant to engage in open field battles. Too many siege battles, compared to RTW and its mods.
I'm just waiting for Third Age TW to come out, hopefully next month!
MTW2 field battles suck compared to some of the battles I played for RTW and its mods. Combat on the battlemap is way too fast, AI armies rout easily, and you end up spending more time chasing routers then you do fighting.
Siege battles are better. Castles and cities are larger and there is more room for manuvering and differant tactics, towers will only shoot at attckers if there are friendly units nearby, there are multiple ways to attack and defend.
I wonder if XGM will ever move its mod to MTW2? It might be better to skip it and go straight for ETW which has many improvements over both RTW and MTW2.
I can't speak for Dime himself, but I can't see it on M2, and for ETW, it remains to be seen if a classical age mod can be made and how much work would be involved... XGM is pretty well-entrenched here, and its one of those mods that keeps getting added to in small versions, and isn't abandoned after a final patch like EB/SPQR/RTRPE.
Me, I play M2TW. Actually M2TW (vanilla, not SS) is not really a resource hog. It works fine with my T61 laptop (onboard Graphic card XD).
SS is nice but...my computer is not capable of running it well

play medieval 2 third age total war thats best
Stainless Steel for me
I am hoping EB will be released for MTW2 soon. For some reason I can't get EB with RTW to work with my Vista OS. There is also another Late Roman Era mod for MTW2. I will have to give these both a try when I re-install.
