What if we made the captain_portraits with images of actual captains instead of the normal one. Like this one for the seleucids:
Normal style:

That is an excellent idea!![]()

Yup, I like it.
Does the image of the captain remain fixed? Can the captain die of old age (I doubt it)?

I'm confused, what are captain_portraits?
if you ever double click on an army without a general, it says "Captain -blah blah" and shows a piccie of the faction's banner...![]()

Ah, hmmmm. Not sure how I feel about that; giving them portraits would 'elevate' them to the level of generals, and there's also the clash between that portrait style and the general portraits -- they look nothing alike, so it might feel like something that was brought in from another game... it's hard to say without seeing it in action.
I'm so tired of vanilla portraits, I am all for *anything* that eliminates that look and feel.
Worm, I say do it![]()
If for some reason certain folks want a vanilla looking Antiochos III or Hannibal or a banner in place of a captains face, we can make the new portraits an option in the installer when the game is released or something.

I said extra portraits can be an optional DL.
Its all about historical immersion for some of us. I do not want a bald and grey bearded Antiochus when I start RS2 when theres a perfectly accurate likeness of him that can be used.
I agree on this one with Argent Usher and background needs to be removed.
Antiochus isn't a 'captain', he's a family member, different type of portrait. Unique historical portraits are cool, it's the replacement of all the 'captain' portraits (i.e. faction banners, see above) with rendered portraits that don't mesh with the existing portraits, that's what I'm afraid might not work.
My fault, I did not know you meant the captains.
Still, a face is better than a flag IMHO. Again, immersion and the break from vanilla/CA stuff I support if it'll look good, and what Worm has looks better already![]()
In Halie's Shed is a nice face builder prog perhaps we can use it. I had played with the program and it is easy to use and you can alter the look from young to old and other things too.

Do we want to redo all the portraits in the game? If we can come up with a good consistent look, I'm all for that. But they have to be high quality...
How many portraits we need? I think that RTW has thousands of them.
I'm with Mulatto......RS2 + Vanilla garbage = scruffy looking.
I'd sooner have a 'face' than a 'banner' as the picture of a captain. That's like having a picture of a dishwasher for your mother. (well, close, anyway)
I'm certain a well-done portrait would look great, and as it's in a place not used for other portraits, isn't going to conflict with anything.
I like it.

Devil's advocate:
Can you tie a 'captain' to a given portrait? How are 'captains' generated? Is every 'captain' going to have the same face? Or a randomly selected one? Does the game keep track of a 'captain' when a family member enters the stack? Does the same captain return when the family member leaves? Or are we just going to use one generic face for each faction's 'captain'? Won't that look a bit odd?
