    http://www.freedomhouse.org/template...=363&year=2008

I think I taly its actually not so free, we are governed by a party thats lead by one of the richest people in world , and controls quite much of the media and journals of our country .... a sort of mediacracy....

    What you think about that?
Is the world democracies ruled by a rich elite?

in what ways? Its a really weird country but overall I wouldN't consider people in Turkey free political wise. There are just so many dark things behind the curtains.
"Therefore I am not in favour of raising any dogmatic banner. On the contrary, we must try to help the dogmatists to clarify their propositions for themselves. Thus, communism, in particular, is a dogmatic abstraction; in which connection, however, I am not thinking of some imaginary and possible communism, but actually existing communism as taught by Cabet, Dézamy, Weitling, etc. This communism is itself only a special expression of the humanistic principle, an expression which is still infected by its antithesis – the private system. Hence the abolition of private property and communism are by no means identical, and it is not accidental but inevitable that communism has seen other socialist doctrines – such as those of Fourier, Proudhon, etc. – arising to confront it because it is itself only a special, one-sided realisation of the socialist principle."

"Free" is a relative term, and organisations like "Freedom House" are political tools.

If it wasn't because of Russia's obvious piss-poor ranking you wouldn't be claiming this...

I think you are asking perhaps to broad a question or rather two different ones.

Do you mean free as in does the population in general enjoy a high level of personal freedom, lack of government control and protected rights or do you mean do the people enjoy a broad and effective democracy?

I would say so – you can have a democracy which is in effect a moderate oligarchy / plutocracy – but still ascribes to personal liberty, and a protection of individual rights even if many individuals lack real political power. In effect even if there is a small ruling class that is a distinct minority of the population but also one that values and supports freedom for everyone you still have it (freedom) for everyone.

I think it requires a fairly broad non-democracy, and social mobility. If the ruling class is closed and small I don't think it works, but if the economic system allows anyone to have some chance of advancing into teh ruling class than yes an oligarchy can still provide a free society.

think of Turkey as a little more worse palce than Italy in that sense. You should be familiar with gladio an stuff....well wehave 10x that.

I think I would disagree. Caste rather implies a closed system. I as an American am admittedly looking at if from the outside, so I’ll ask you…

If you were as rich as Berlusconi and built up/controlled a large rival set economic assets – no matter what your background – do you think you could aspire to a similar political career?

No. My country is run by the scum of the earth, postcommunist neoliberal dictators, who stole everything the could, while sucking up Eu supplies too...
All they do is to support multinational companies and banks while stealing state property constantly.

They try to brainwash the masses with empty promises while the same time terrorizing them with self-made dangers...like "neonazis" they are worse than most communist ever where....

Stupid, honourless weaklings who humiliate our nation...but their time is counted...the countdown started for them.
They don't deserve the bullet they should rightly receive.

No, my country is by far not free. But will be soon!.

Well in Canada obviously yes, Canada is an amazing country and I am really glad to be here.

If I were to assess the situation in Romania I have a very similar opinion to Odo's: no. The country is not free as it is being cannibalized by European and North American countries who obviously don't give a damn about the consequences of their actions. The EU is the new Ottoman Empire for countries in Southeastern Europe, and I can only assume I am living through the 2nd Phanariot Age. I cannot believe my country actually signed an agreement which put an expiry date on our national currency; probably the greatest symbol of national sovereignty.

There can be no talk of freedom when a country lacks an independent foreign policy and barely has an independent domestic policy. We should just do everything unilaterally and tell Brussels (and anyone else for that matter) to stuff it.

The Netherlands is pretty free. Too free, sometimes. But yeah, we have it good.
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.

Well, this sums up my opinion of Serbia and Macedonia (where I live) except the EU membership of course.
