That's right. Abstinence is the answer to stopping AIDS, so sayeth the Pope.

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE — Pope Benedict XVI said on his way to Africa today that condoms were not the answer in the continent's fight against HIV, his first explicit statement on an issue that has divided even clergy working with AIDS patients.

He had never directly addressed condom use, but has said the Roman Catholic Church is in the forefront of the battle against AIDS. The Vatican encourages sexual abstinence to fight the spread of the disease.

“You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms,” the pope told reporters aboard the Alitalia plane on its way to Yaounde, Cameroon, where he has arrived to start his first visit to Africa as pontiff. “On the contrary, it increases the problem.”

The seven-day pilgrimage will also include a stop in Angola.

About 22 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with HIV, according to UNAIDS. In 2007, three-quarters of all AIDS deaths worldwide were there, as well as two-thirds of all people living with HIV.

Rebecca Hodes with the Treatment Action Campaign in South Africa said if the pope is serious about preventing new HIV infections, he will focus on promoting wide access to condoms and spreading information on how best to use them. “Instead, his opposition to condoms conveys that religious dogma is more important to him than the lives of Africans,” said Ms. Hodes, director of policy, communication and research for the action campaign.

While she said the pope is correct that condoms are not the sole solution to Africa's AIDS epidemic, she said they are one of the very few HIV prevention mechanisms proven to work.

Even some priests and nuns working with those living with HIV/AIDS question the church's opposition to condoms amid the pandemic ravaging Africa.

Africa is the fastest-growing region for the Roman Catholic Church, though it competes with Islam and evangelical churches.

The pope also said today he intends to make an appeal for “international solidarity” for Africa in the face of the global economic downturn. He said that while the church does not propose specific economic solutions, it can give “spiritual and moral” suggestions.

Describing the current crisis as the consequence of “a deficit of ethics in economic structures,” the pope said: “It is here that the church can make a contribution.”

On the plane, Pope Benedict also dismissed the notion that he was facing increasing opposition and isolation within the church, particularly after an outreach to ultraconservatives that led to his lifting the excommunication of a Holocaust-denying bishop. “The myth of my solitude makes me laugh,” the pope said, adding that he can count on a network of friends and aides whom he sees every day.

In a letter to Catholic bishops released last week, the pope made an unusual public acknowledgment of Vatican mistakes and turmoil in his church over the rehabilitation of Bishop Richard Williamson.

While acknowledging mistakes were made in handling the affair, Pope Benedict said he was saddened that he was criticized “with open hostility” even by those who should have known better.

Some of his points I agree, like the deficit of ethics.. but do you think this guy has heard of the troubles in Africa with rape and AIDS and infant-ing?

Abstinence just makes people angrier. Sex is the solution. But rape is not. And AIDS spreading is not. Condoms answer that. This old man has an opinion, not a fact.

Well it's cute at least... until he starts to smell.

And yeah, even with condoms AIDS can still spread. It also does nothing about the myth that f-ing an infant or a young virgin will rid the HIV from the body...

And how many rapists come with a condom?

Education. Then some brainwashing. And to top it all off, a bit more education. Couple that with some condoms and you'll start to see results that no amount of preaching abstinence can ever hope to reach.
Of course, such worldly, down to earth, heretical views are below a Pope. But it's a nice thought, nonetheless.

It's not just a matter of 'old people with opinions': the Vatican's been stubbornly moronic about this for a long time, to the point of spreading nonsensical lies about condoms frequently splitting. It's so moronic that it's almost hard to believe that it's sincere.

Do you think the Pope has his opinion based on his age? Or his religeous beliefs? Your title makes it seem as if it's due to his age, yet we know it is because of his Catholicsim.

I'm wondering why you chose to use "age" as the mislead, vs "people who dress in white" or "Germans" or anything else just as silly and unrelated?

Whilst the Catholic Church's stance on condoms is reprehensible, they are not the only problem. US aid is tied to abstinance only programs. Rapists are unlikely to use condoms. Some believe that having sex with a virgin will cure AIDS. Many men around the world prefer unprotected sex because, let's face it, it feels better. Reversing the absurd official line of the Catholic church (which might well have happened if a reasonable candidate such as Claudio Hummes or one of the other liberal Cardinals from the Americas had been ellected) would be a great start, but only a start.

Many, many Catholics think the Church's policy on condoms should be reversed, including quite a few cardinals (though not very voiciferously), as I mentioned above. On the ground, many Catholic missions in Africa advocate condom use, though the official policy of the church means they do it on the quiet. There's nothing to stop Catholics disagreeing with the official position except 'politics'. It's certainly not a dogmatic necessity.

This is hardly suprising, and the fact that the pope dislikes condoms will not suprise many.
This should be a fair few deaths on his conscience, but sadly i can't imagine he sees it that way...

Sadly, you're probably right. In his last days, Pope John Paul II apologised for the Spanish Inquisition - that's, what, 200 years?

    I love this article.
“You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms,” the pope told reporters aboard the Alitalia plane on its way to Yaounde, Cameroon, where he has arrived to start his first visit to Africa as pontiff. “On the contrary, it increases the problem.”
I'm sorry, what? Safe sex increases the spread of STIs? Sounds like the Pope has been reading Chick tracts.

The pope also said today he intends to make an appeal for “international solidarity” for Africa in the face of the global economic downturn. He said that while the church does not propose specific economic solutions, it can give “spiritual and moral” suggestions.
This is just hilarious. "International solidarity"? It makes world leaders look like they care about Africa, but doesn't commit them to anything.

Describing the current crisis as the consequence of “a deficit of ethics in economic structures,” the pope said: “It is here that the church can make a contribution.”
The Pope is just pissed that people are spending their money on food and utilities rather than putting it in the collection plate.

While acknowledging mistakes were made in handling the affair, Pope Benedict said he was saddened that he was criticized “with open hostility” even by those who should have known better.
