Default Senator Calls for the Resignation or Suicide of AIG Execs

Sen. Charles Grassley is so angry over AIG bonuses that he says the executives should resign or kill themselves.

In a comment aired this afternoon on WMT, an Iowa radio station, Grassley (R-Iowa) said: “The first thing that would make me feel a little bit better towards them if they’d follow the Japanese model and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say I’m sorry, and then either do one of two things — resign, or go commit suicide.”

The radio clip was also aired on WTOP, a news radio station in Washington.

He only says they should learn some decency from the Japanese.

I don't think resignation or suicide is always the best option, because they will still have to find someone that can do a better job.
But to give yourself a nice juicy bonus while receiving billions in government aid is certainly not the most respectful thing to do.

I keep thinking about how I got my revered Decimus Maximus Faction leader committing suicide over a report the roman senate sent in my last Julii campaign.

Wow, I guess RTW does apply in rl!

I wonder if the family of the next company executive that kills him/herself will think it makes them feel a bit better about the whole thing.

It's maybe one thing to respect people for doing it but quite another to go on the radio telling them they should.

Does it occur to anyone that not fairly compensating its best performers and executives will drive out the very people it needs to help it return to the black?

Problem is: they aren't just rewarding the best performers, they also give huge bonuses to executives who have driven the company into the ground.

They should base a bonus on individual performance, not just hand them out to anyone with a title.

Name one person that you think is getting an unearned and undeserved bonus.

So you would have AIG break the law, and they would be breaking the law, to not pay its employeess what they contractually obligated to pay?

Similarly AIG is also contractually obligated to pay out on insurance claims. Are they not supposed to do that either?

We are talking about bonuses, not regular pay.
Isn't the very DEFINITION of a bonus that it's NOT contractually mandatory?

I think we the people can fully justify torture like in guantanamo on these bastards for stealing our money, if the usa government can justify torture on a BS excuse, we can, im having first go!

THey didn't steal anything. Your government came to the decsision that AIG needs your money more than you did. Your government stole from you, not AIG.

No, we give them the money supposedly because they was completeley bankrupt, when your bankrupt you dont go and give nearly $200 million in bonuses to people who caused the bankrupcy in the first place, and two, this bailout did nothing anyway, the banks are hoarding the cash, they arent giving out fresh loans, no new credit, no mortgages, no nothing. Bucket of fail. Time to pull out the portable torture kit me thinks.

ah....so for you it's right that a company that received 170 billions (170 freaking billions!) of taxpayers money just to stay afloat give 165 millions in bonus to their management??

Seriously these guys should really do harakiry or how the hell its called live on TV.

Yeah it is right. It is the effing law that they have to do it. There is only one way for AIG to get out of their contracts, and that is to go bankrupt. And the US federal govenment said, "no way, no how can AIG go bankrupt, here is $170 Billion, get back to work."

Edward Liddy was hired to lead AIG out of this mess, he didn't get them into it. He is working for $1 a year and equity.

    Try again.

Bonuses are part of contracts. A performance bonus sets out certain criteria that must be met for the bonus to be paid.

Now I don't know the specifics of how AIG handles its employment contracts, buy it may very well be that performance bonsues may make up the lions share of compensation for many employees.

Although I understand the Senator's sentiments, it is still very "unprofessional" to encourage suicide to anyone.
