Default Red Dwarf cast to be reunited

Many Red Dwarf fans here? In my opinion it is one of the finest sitcoms ever to hit the British screen, and even though this series loses its way from time to time it is still a gem. Can't wait for this.

The cast of hit sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf are to reunite for a new two-partstoryline which will see them finally return to Earth. Red Dwarf: Back to Earth will air on UKTV digital channel Dave over the Easter weekend.

It will sit alongside two further new episodes – the improvised Red Dwarf: Unplugged, which will feature the cast dealing with no sets, effects or autocue, and Red Dwarf: the Making of Back to Earth, a behind the scenes look at the new production.

The new two-parter will begin a decade on from when the crew of the Red Dwarf were last seen, with a "shock development" throwing Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Kryten back to Earth.

Chris Barrie will return as Rimmer, Craig Charles as Lister, Danny John-Jules as Cat and Robert Llewellyn as Kryten, with the new storyline written and directed by Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor. Filming of the new episodes begins next month.

Red Dwarf originally launched on BBC2 in 1988 and went on to air for eight series and 52 episodes, as well as a number of specials. The new episodes are Dave's biggest commission yet and its first foray into scripted comedy.

Can't wait, even though the show ran out of steam in the last few seasons.

I know. Although I can't believe Craig Chalres has spent a reported £250,000 ($500,000) on crack in the meantime...

Anyways, scenes such as these are Britsh sitcom classics!

    Agreed!

I was surprised how late I heard about it myself. Not long to go though!

I agree to a point. While series 8 was trying too hard to be a polished American type of sit com ,I thought series 7 was quite well written especially the introduction of Konchansky and the departure of Ace.

Series 5 was definitely the peak of the series although I don't like the Terrorform or Quarantine. Angels and devils and Back to reality and two of my favs.

Worst episode of the whole 8 series, Gunmen of the Apocalypse . I don't know why that's the most popular episode in America.
It's the same each time with progress. First they ignore you, then they say you're mad, then dangerous, then there's a pause and then you can't find anyone who disagrees with you.

Is that all. Is that a conservative estimate?

Anyway, not really excited about this. Never really got Red Dwarf. Something just didn't sit right.

Come on! OK I'd be the first to admit it wasn't a patch on the original but the crew still have that spark, and it is great to see them all together. However it seemed an imitation of itself rather than a natural progression. And it was too clynical and clean if you know what I mean. But I think it was mostly let down by being too short and too slick, I loved the low budget stuff better than the cgi, I also think it would have been better to have the canned laughter as it seems so wrong without it.

And I know what you mean, what happened to that cliff hanger! Felt very much like a one off special than anything like the series.

I agree completely, especially about it being too clinical and clean, that's exactly what I thought but I didn't really know how to word it.

Its what I was fed by my local newspaper.

I understand. You have to reach a certain state of mind to appreciate Red Dwarf. Some would say this involves transcending conventional humour and reaching a utopian haven of sarcasm and subtlety, while others would say this involves downing a bottle of whisky and having interactive arguments with Rimmer. Nonethless give it time and you'll get into it. I thouroughly recommend.

Yeah, lets hope the next few parts can do the old stuff justice! Although I fear this is how all remakes end up. Similar to Indiana Jones (it wasnt a terrible movie in my opinion, there just wasnt something quite right, something didnt click).

I don't think its even that. I actually do find it funny (and would agree that it transcends conventional humour), and consider Rimmer the creation of a comic genius ... and yet for some reason I don't really like it. I just can't place why. The only thing I can think of is the sense of desolation I get from it, what with the characters being for a great part alone in space.

It was pants like the last two series. The dog should have been shot along time ago.

Doug Naylor was not the most talented of the original writing duo.

Tonights episode was a marginal improvement, but the script sucks.
