I used to love Doom.
I used to love Doom.
Used to? I still do.
Love is eternal dude.
aye twas awsome
I liked the old one, but the newer game wasn't that great.
Well, the reason Doom 3 stank was because it was trying to be something that it wasn't. Doom was never about horror.
Yeah, I still do. I picked up Doom 1 & 2 + expansion packs from Steam for like $1 or something. Even though I played these games a ton back in the 90's, I still find them fun in spite of all the new technology out there today. They just had something to them that I haven't seen recreated in any other game. I never got into Doom 3 though. It just didn't seem like doom to me.
Don't know about that...the original titles used to scare the crap out of me back when I was a kid...there's nothing more frightening to a 10 year old than a flying red monster-ball with horns coming at you shooting fireballs...hahaDoom was never about horror.
In all seriousness though how could Doom NOT be a horror game...sure it's not trying to be Resident Evil or Silent Hill but there's some degree of horror that has to go into a game that feature legions of creatures from hell popping up all over the place trying to kill you in abandoned space ships and colonies right?

Its not about horror in the traditional sense, that is that it's not trying to scare you. You're massacring demons, not the other way around.
Anyway Doom rules. Doom 3 sucked. Nyah nyah nanny boo boo.
just for Doom 3's sake, once you got to the last few levels and they started throwing lots more monsters at you, it became a lot less "waltzing through corridors while imps jump out of hidden doors at you" and a lot more "SHOOT EVERYTHING". I remember the end when I went on a huge shotgun spree and wiped out five rooms without stopping until I finally got killed by one of those big commando demons that shoot tentacles at you and I realized "im having fun! *happy face*"
Too bad it was the last few levels.

There are literally thousands of fan-created levels (WADs) out there, enough to let you play new levels for the rest of your life.
Because pixellated 3D is a pain for modern eyes to behold, I use the Doomsday source-port. This gives me high-resolution textures, particle effects and polygonal monsters and decorations.
Here is a taster...
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The engine has just had a new release (v1.9.0-beta6) and it really rocks. There are a number of resource packs that need to be added to the basic installation to get Doomsday in all its blood-spattered 3D glory. Go to this thread for details of the packs and download links.
It's always been about you, a really pissed off Space Marine, taking on all of Hell's legions because you are oh-so-very pissed. It was never about horror, really.
I think I agree with this. Though I do remember being scared to hell at that massive minotaur boss in Doom 2 who circled around this building in this immense open area and made the ground shake. When he got close you'd be like "oh shi-" especially since the door back was locked.
I have approximate answers and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I’m not absolutely sure of anything, and many things I don’t know anything about. But I don’t have to know an answer. I don’t feel frightened by not knowing.

I used to love doom as well
Doom 2 was the best. Double barrel shotgun was so incredible fun, and so inventive! Doom 3 looked really nice, had an utterly great atmosphere, but it wasn't doom. It was a mix between silent hill and doom. Doom is about mindless mayhem. All about the killing. Not narrow corridors and psychological warfare.
I did enjoy the audio logs a great deal. Often thinking to myself 'this cant be good' whenever hearing peoples diaries. And often thinking 'I wanna stay here where theres light, I don't want to go down those dark stairs' or whatever. Overall the game became repetitive, there was no variation in the combat, and those god damn two legged creatures (cant remember their name) who teleported to you was too overpowered.
And THANK GOD for the torch mod!!!!!!!
edit : I always played with headphones, and all the lights in the room turned off. What a friggn trip!
lol
It's the game that made me use shotguns in every other game I've ever played.
Oh, how I loved the shotgun in Doom. And then how overjoyed I was they doubled my shotgun pleasure in Doom 2.
I didn't like Doom 3 though, except for the name they didn't have anything in common.
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...
I wonder how they'll go about making Doom 4...
I quite liked Doom 3's slower pace, because when you did get cornered by a load of slashing, biting, clawing Denizens of Hell, it was all the more shocking!
Having said that, now I've seen that mod for the older Doom games, I might just pick them up! Has it got any known bugs or issues?

I think I remember seeing Space Marines impaled in big spikes on some of the levels, too.there's some degree of horror that has to go into a game that feature legions of creatures from hell popping up all over the place trying to kill you in abandoned space ships and colonies right?
Anyway, I remember playing the Doom shareware off a 3.5" Floppy Disk (I also remember playing Wolfenstein 3D off on a 5¼" Floppy, too) and I loved the fact that your melee weapon was a chainsaw. It was weird that you couldn't use the mouse to look up or down, making it quite strange to play these days.
I got Doom 3 quite cheap a few years ago but never played it as I don't like being made to jump at scary moments in games. lol
I remember seeing a quote when it first announced by the developers, saying they acknowledge how much Doom 3 drifted from Dooms original style and how they wanted to bring it back to that run 'n gun carnage.
I hope they make the multiplayer good again... sooooooo much.
