I used two sources for this exhaustive list: Gaulish Personal Names by Ellis Evans and Dictionnaire de la langue gauloise by Xavier Delamarre. To be honest I probably only typed less than 50% of the total names.

This put everything in alphabetical order, thus enabling me to make the list much longer than I was going to make it. It even removes duplicate entries as well, which was great: http://alphabetizer.flap.tv/

I chose not to split these up into Arverni, Boioan, Gallaecian and Belgic spheres because that would literally take forever. I would have to look up each name individually and determine where it was found at. So these will work for all those factions.

CA made the Gallic names all Latinized with the Latin masculine -us ending, when they should be like I have them on the list with the masculine Gallic -os ending. In Gallic females usually have a feminine -ia or -a ending.

All the semi-accurate names that CA has are already on my own list in the first place but with the -os ending. I'm amazed, but not suprised, how little time they spent on the barb names

I assume the long name list in post #1 can go for all Celtic factions and the Gallaecians, but each faction can have its own set of surname cities and tribes that are accurate to the faction? For example, the Arverni can have surnames like: Of_Alesia, of_Uxellodunum, of_the_Arverni; while the Boii would instead have ones like: of_Bonnonia, of_Hyrcania, of_the_Hevetti; and the Belgae of_the_Nervii, of_Camulodunon, etc...?

Yes, you can have separate 'of (city-name)' entries for the individual factions...if fact, it would make more sense.

Does anyone know how to put '{' and '}' before and after all those names in a separate list? Thing is, they have to be entered like this:

{Johnny} Johnny

in the file, and it's a nightmare putting the '{' characters before and after each one. I am not a typist, so if someone knows the mysteries of 'Word' or some other program that will do that, it would be very helpful. It's the most tedious part of changing names.

And I don't think anything needs to be done with the Romans. I already added a whole bunch of Roman names.

DVK, have you found out how to add the {} brackets around the names? I haven't, without doing it manually.

I feel responsible (especially since the list is so long) to manually add the brackets if there is no easy way. Let me know...

P.S If I am going to do some is it literrally just turning "Name" into "{Name}"?

The file that is the hardest to get right is 'names.txt'. The names have to be like this:

{Cadwaladur} (EXACTLY THREE TAB KEYS) Cadwaladur

Exactly three tab keys because otherwise the name is indexed in from the left hand margin.
The name in the brackets is the name RTW looks for. The name after it is the name displayed in the game. Took me a while to figure that out. But that's how you get:

{Ptolemy_IV} Ptolemy IV

There can be no spaces in the name in the brackets, but there CAN be in the displayed name. You could even do this:

{Ptolemy_IV} John Smith

And it would work.

The other important file is 'descr_names.txt' . In that file, you don't need brackets, just a list of the names as they SHOW in the brackets in names.txt.
Then in descr_strat.txt, if you were to use Ptolemy IV.....it has to be, again, as shown in the brackets.........Ptolemy_IV.

It is a bit confusing...I even had to look again to confirm what I 'thought' it was.

This is why I chuckle when people go to so much trouble trying to add their own name to RTW. All they would have to do is change the 'displayed' name to 'Larry' or whatever they wanted. You wouldn't have to change anything else. In fact, you change them ALL to Larry...and RTW would work fine because it still thinks they are all different.

This is how my text/names file appears in regular notepad. Is there anything significant about some having a 3 tab spacing, as opposed to only 2?

Ok, the names are tabbed and spaced correctly. I chose a portion of the Celtic names, opened up the data/text/names.txt file, pasted them, and heres what I see:

For all intents and purposes, it looks like everything will work perfectly. I added the brackets { } to a few of the names to see if that throws off the spacing, and too my relief it did not. Everything is aligned and should work. All that is left in to add the { } around the names in the first column.

@Ketchup, you said earlier you wouldn't mind helping out. Do you mind at least starting on adding the { } to the names?

Heres the male and female names in Notepad .txt format, but I've also Wordpad .doc backups.

I've managed to do about 3/4 of the male list (down to Sammo to be precise), but something else has cropped up that I need to deal with.

Mulatto (or anyone else that wants to), I'd be grateful if you could do the rest.
