Default World in Conflict: Soviet Assault

As some of you might know, the first expansion pack to the acclaimed game 'World in Conflict' is being released all over the world since a few days ago. It has been in development for some time, and due to the difficulties between Activision-Blizzard and Massive Entertainment, the expansion pack was even in doubt completely. Fortunately, it is now here..

Unfortunately for Europeans (myself included) we get forced to buy the so-called 'complete edition', which includes the original game, plus the expansion pack, for the ridiculous price of 30 euro's. I already own the original game, but I can't buy 'just' the expansion pack, because it's unavailable for sale in Europe. As stated in an official post on the MassGate forums: "The standalone Soviet Assault mission pack will only be available for North and South American users."

I tried going to digital download distributors like Gamestop and Direct2Drive, except Gamestop only accepts credit cards (which I don't own or ever plan to use), whereas Direct2Drive has the expansion pack limited to US and Canadian customers. On Steam, you cannot buy just the expansion pack if you own the disc version of World in Conflict.

So, it seems like this is one game I'm going to put on hold for a long time, until that price drops to the amount you're supposed to pay for an expansion pack, which is at least half of what they're currently asking us Europeans to pay. It's too bad; I would've gladly given my money to Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment (and I'm sure there are many others who feel the same way), but unfortunately they aparently think there's no reason to pay any attention to anyone outside of North America..

dont worry too much, its pretty bad, Mostly the same missions with the perspective flipped and a few new missions, Also no new units, The russians play the same as the US does.

That's unfortunate for you...yeah, just wait it out.

I really liked the original WiC so hearing what roy has to say is a little unnerving and disappointing...however one must keep in mind that this game was about to get scraped so they probably just wanted to get it off the floor and move on - leaving it probably ill-tested and incomplete.

It's unfortunate that this is the last game of the franchise. From what I understand Activision-Blizzard do NOT intend to continue it.

Activision-Blizzard sold Massive Entertainment to Ubisoft last year, so Ubisoft is now publishing Soviet Assault.

Correct so the game series isn't getting scraped.
Also you can buy the expansion of Steam if you live in Europe.
However you require the steam version of the original to play it.
    Which you can't buy.
No idea why Ubisoft went down this strange path with the expansion.

Really? Well that's great news! Last I heard they picked up Massive and then decided to scrap it but this is great! Thanks for the update.

Yeah Ubisoft bought them last November and decided that Massive could start working on Soviet Assault again. I am not sure if there will be any more World in Conflict games after this though, we'll have to see.

This is going to be one great game. I am really looking forward to plot development from the Soviet's point of view. I thought world in conflict had a great story.

Cool. Yeah I too am not sure about the future of WiC as a franchise...feedback from SA seems to be pretty negative and if that expansion sinks interest in the series will be tainted. Yet, from what I recall the WiC campaign didn't leave any room for a sequel right? It's been awhile since I've played it.

The only way I could see another title from this franchise would be if they totally switched it up and put you in control of a totally different country or something along those lines.

However, I think WiC might very well be one of those few games these days that should stay as a 1 or 2 game series...

I was annoyed about this too. It's obvious they decided to use a minor expansion pack that was supposed to come out months ago and market it as a sort of "WiC Enhanced Edition". I didn't mind replaying the game that much to get at the Soviet missions, although I think they break up the narrative flow of the american campaign . It was cool to get the Berlin Wall and Fjord maps for use in skirmish/multi, although seeing them reuse WiC multiplayer maps for most of the Russian levels made them look a bit cheap. I would've loved to see a Paris or Washington DC map like in the trailers.

I don't particalurly like WiC but i had great fun playing through the campaign, it was top notch. Soviet assault is seriously lacking, you get six missions playable only together with the American campaign (so you jump from the original campagin to the soviet one). That was a drag, since i didn't want to play the US campaign again... (so i used the console and WinGame to skip the US missions)

The missions themselves aren't that good (except the first one maybe), you mostly contol really small amouts of vehicles or infantry, there isn't a "grand" last mission (like the Seattle one) and the story is basically a copy of the original one. You have your noble colonel, your insane and stupid captain, your good guy and the best millitary leader ever - you.

I didn't like it very much. They should have added more content, like a full soviet campagin...

Pity. I hadn't got much info about the expansion and I was expecting so much more. Won't be getting this, even if only for the difficulty of the process.

If that's all, I'm not getting it. I'll play WiC again, but now on a new pc (coming soon), so I can actually enjoy the graphics.

Well it does add 2 new maps to MP and a new fire-support (nothing really worthwile), so yeah there isn't much content there.

Started MP today, Its great fun, one of the few RTS games where the MP isn't rulled by those who know the set develpoment plans/rush strategy for each map.
