Default Knights of St. John and converting infidels

I've just begun a campagin as the Knights of St. John. My first order of business was to conquer North Africa to establish a tax base. In doing so I've discovered that the infidel North African populace has other ideas about their so called "freedom."

Is the best way to convert the population by building a church school in the most recent village that pops-up? Exemption from taxes is not helping all that much, my garrison is weak, and my two regions of Tunis and Malta are covered in Rebels and Barbary States' troops. Thoughts?

Me too I really miss being able to exterminate unruly towns. With pops in the millions it sure would be a job to kill 3/4 of them however.

Yeah, the need for extermination of the general population is paramount in this situation...

I currently have the same problem playing as Portugal. I captured Morocco and the Barbary States but I haven't found a way yet to convert the people.

You can destroy any village building at any time and replace it with a church. That would be what I would do, build a church in every province and send out all your ministers to lowest order provinces and enemy provinces ahead of your troops.

The navy of the Barbary States is currently also dominate in the region. Genoa has tried to step in and help in the navil aspect, but those simpletons haven't even put a dent in the opposition. The highest level of ship I can currently recurit is a sixth rate! Has anyone overcome really bad navil odds stacked against them? When using light, fast navil units what is the best way of going about winning battles against numerous, larger (more guns) ships?

Thats a wonderful idea. Why didn't I just think of that...

out produce them, wear them down, and don't let them cap your ships.

I played a Malta campaign (still going actually) and in my opinion the best thing to do is to capture Tunis, take 5 years to stabilize it, then capture Libya as well which will take another 5-10 years of tax exemption/rebel fighting to stabilize. Move on to Algeria, and repeat... The Barbary states navy won't last long, since they are at war with every major power in the game anyway. By about 1715 their ships are all sunk by French and Spanish ships of the line - all you have to do is keep your meager crusader squadron away from them in the meantime. Once you have stabilized North Africa, figure out which provinces will produce towns soon. Look in the capital at the bottom of the screen to find out when the next village upgrades to a town. Then leave that province tax free until the next village pops up. I got my first town in Algeria in 1733, which I used to build a school so that I could finally research. Of course if you want to convert the infidels instead, build a church school - but that was my second priority. To be honest, if your objective is to grow a village to a town, I think that it could be optimized to be done by the early 1710's. I was just messing around with my campaign, and I got bogged down chasing rebels all over the Sahara instead of worrying about population growth efficiency... Well that, and I sent my Navy out into the world to try to steal from the heretics (protestants) in the new world... which did not go over very well!

Thanks for the input, that surely helps.

The Barbary States have some heavy loyalism. I remember in a British campaign I held the three of their territories for quite a while, and I still had to exempt them from taxes. Whereas Morrocco on the other hand came round to my side within 5 turns or so.

Make sure to erect a religious building on each one. But otherwise, there's not much except putting up with the disloyalty that you can do.

That was kinda going to be my question. Do they have some interesting units or the general ones

Not really, just general units. They also depend on militia infantry too much, although that might be because they can't afford a lot of line infantry. I fought them with the Marathans and decimated their army in battle (wanted to get a main base in the Europe theater), then they begged me to be my protectorate and I accepted.

If i take over another nation i simply 'go with the flow'. i dont see the benefit in converting peoples religion

To keep unrest down, view what religion the most of em are and stick with that, build a few palaces for happyness and dragoons for repression
